Greeting fellow growers! It's outdoor season here in South Africa and I'll be doing a couple of outdoor autos again this season. I'm hoping to do 2 harvests before winter. I'm trying all new strains and I'm really excited to be growing out some highly anticipated ones from FastBuds, Royal Queen, Exotic Seeds and Dutch Passion. Germination had me perplexed this time around. I usually get quite high rates but this time I had some failures and I can't figure out where I went wrong. I store my seeds in an airtight, lightproof container in the fridge. My go to method is to start by soaking the seeds for 12-24 hours in spring water, before transferring to paper towels. making sure they're damp not wet and after getting a tap root., then I transfer to jiffy pellets (soaked in trichoderma to innoculate against damping off) or small pots of the same medium I'll be growing in (Freedom Farms Organic Classic). If there's no sign of life after another 12-24 hours in the paper towels, I transfer anyway. Then I place a humidity dome over them and put them under lights until they sprout, then remove the dome, leave them under 24 hours LED tubes for a week or so then move them to their 40L pots outside. This worked as expected for 4/8 of the seeds I germinated, but 50% of them died before showing face. It could have been the cold snap in weather while the seeds were soaking, or it may have been something else, but it's not breeder specific - the only common denominator between the seeds that died was....me. My second seed sprouted perfectly and I skipped the jiffy pellets this time around, had some concerns about how much moisture they can retain... Anyway, I try to not get too hung up on my losses and prefer to brush it off and move forward, but I would like to know where I went wrong to avoid it happening again. Here's to a new grow season and hopefully some new friends in the comments. Follow along and let's see if I can get some monster autos outdoors! Cheers for now 😎

Good choice and good luck with her! For the germination, I use those styrofoam and plastic containers that you get sushi in. Boil water and wet the paper towel. Let it cool, pour off the excess and put the seeds in. I put all the seeds toward the top point down. I keep it closed and level for the 1st 24h and they usually pop within that time. Then I tilt it so the seeds are all point down, anywhere between 45 and 90 degrees. It helps the excess water drip out and the roots all grow straight. Normally leave them in there for 3 days, until the shell is off completely and then plant them and use a chopstick to make a small hole and depending on how far they are you can either plant them 1 or 2mm under the surface or just above. Has given me much more consistent results.

@Epokwan, that's the best, experiment as much as you can. That's all I've been doing and lots of failures, but a lot of things that used to stress me out are no problem anymore and is such a good feeling.

@Shinsimilla, you're not wrong - I've had mixed feelings about soaking them as well, had a lot of success with it but also drowned some before. 12 hours is generally safe, but like you say - probably not even necessary. Well one thing is for sure, this season has got me questioning all the methods!

@Epokwan, Yeah, I'm not a fan of the soak in a glass method. Causes me more trouble than it's worth and they need such little moisture to pop I don't see the need to have a 3 step process before getting to the pots rather than just paper towel for 3 or 4 days and then into the medium. The less you touch or disturb them the better, but good luck with the Orange Bud. 2 years is still fresh man, shouldn't be a problem at all. 💪 I've had 2 yr old seeds I just had in a cupboard pop in less than 24h.

Good to see you have got Ur issues sorted mate. Honestly I think you are very thorough with your technique, it's just one of those things. In my opinion it was probably because of the cold. Seeds will pop fine most ways if they are good quality, but mostly they don't like the cold. I'm live at the top of OZ, but some of my southern friends had fails this year too as they were seduced into germinating by some nice weather early on,,, before a couple of cold snaps ruined their plans...

@Epokwan,I hear you mate. It's easy to get disheartened after a couple of fails. I soak em until they sink. Every few hours I give em a little push and if they float I leave them. If they sink, I go to the paper towel. I'm getting a bit suspicious of the seed quality post covid. It seems everywhere I look people are getting these issues. Good growers too! I suppose it wouldn't matter so much if they were $1 each,,, but at +$20 a pop,, we need em to be reliable!🙂

@Shooey,hey bro - thanks hey, I've been trying a few different methods and the one thing I've done with all of them is soak the seeds, which fellow grower @shinsimilla has had me wondering if it's time to skip this step. The cold snap while soaking could definitely have been the issue, but I'm busy sprouting some photoperiods without soaking and will see if my rates improve. Sucks when you have a method locked in with a good success rate and then you start questioning everything! What's your go-to method?
