SkunkyBreeze Welcome to the grow diary of my 2026 balcony grow!
Since growing weed got legalised in Germany in 2024, I did two grows and had the following leanings:
1. I am going to grow only one plant to give it more space and better air ventilation to prevent powdery mildew and bud rot.
2. I am going to replace the one peppermint strain I was also growing on this balcony, because it is easily infected with powdery mildew.
3. I am going to use an automatic strain, so the plant will live from beginning of May until end of August to lower the danger of powdery mildew, bud rot, and fertilisation by male plants in my neighbourhood. This will also provide a maximum of sunlight to the plant, because the amount of sunlight on my balcony decreases rapidly in October.
4. Germination in low temperatures outside did not really work. I am sticking to my wool pad method this year.
5. Good watering is more important than I thought and it is very easy to overwater your plants. You should not water your plants more than every two to three days, except for the next learning.
6. Heat stress can ruin your harvest pretty fast and right before you finish. If you get temperatures around 30°C, add some extra water in the morning, also if you watered the day before! Additionally, black pots are not a good idea.
7. Bugs are a real problem outside. Prevention is better than cure! In this grow, I will spray some neem-based product once a week during the vegetative phase to prevent bugs. Additionally, I will use bugs to prevent bugs, especially spider mites.
8. I will use trichoderma and the neem-based product to fight powdery mildew before it shows.
9. I will start germination at the end of April, because flowering phase takes more time in an outdoor grow than in an indoor grow.
My balcony is headed southeast, so it gets sunlight from the early morning until about 2:30pm. It has a roof, so rain only affects the plants, if it is very windy. My balcony is located in Berlin, Germany, so if you are interested in specific weather data, you can just look for data from Berlin.
I chose Northern Lights as a strain. It is supposed to be an easy strain that is resistant to powdery mildew. When I tested it, it had a very calming effect, it relaxes the body, makes you hungry, kills your pain and makes you tired. Just what I like about weed. The smell and taste was subtle and mostly pine, it is like walking in a forest. I am excited to see how my product will turn out!
My setup is as follows:
- Pot: 15L Airpot
- Medium: Plagron Light Mix
- Fertilisers: Plagron Terra Grow, Plagron Terra Bloom
- Additives: Plagron Sugar Royal, Plagron Power Roots, Plagron Green Sensation, Plagron Pure Zym
- Water: The tap water in Berlin has a pretty high EC value, so I am mixing it 50/50 with "Gut&Günstig" source water, which has a pretty low EC value.
The actual diary begins here:
28.04.2026: Set up two seeds for germination. There is supposedly very good weather during the weekend. I hope to have a seedling in two or three days, so I can make use of the good weather.
30.04.2026: Had a look at the seeds. They did not germinate yet. Looked up my last diary, it took four to five days last time. So I need to be patient until Saturday or Sunday.
01.05.2026: One of the seeds germinated. Planning to plant it in the evening.
02.05.2026: Planted the seed directly into the final pot. Watered with 200mL with Power Roots and Pure Zym. Put the pot outside. 27°C and sun only today, very low RH. Used a plastic bottle to keep some sun away and keep the RH around the seed high.
03.05.2026: 27°C and sun only. She is slowly growing. Hoping, everything runs well. The second seed did not germinate.
04.05.2026: 23°C, sun and clouds. Watered with 200mL. Not much happening with the germinated seed, I hope it was not too hot and dry in the past few days. Will see if it starts growing or if I have to start over. Started to spray a little water to it to soften the shell.
05.05.2026: Decided to remove the shell manually. It was not possible without destroying the plant. Seemed like the connection between the head in the shell and the rest of the plant was not intact, there was almost nothing in that shell. Maybe it became too hot and dry in the sun. The windows in the plastic bottle were a little too big, so it did not keep humidity as expected. Started my last two seeds, hoping for the best.
07.05.2026: One seed germinated, one did not yet. Hoping the second one also germinates, else this would be a pretty bad germination rate. Will probably plant the germinated seed on saturday morning, so it still has time to grow and maybe already get rid of the shell before getting planted.
08.05.2026: Exactly the same state as yesterday, which is a bad sign. I used to have zero problems with this germination method and 100% germination rate in the past. Maybe I took too much water this year. Exchanged the cotton wool pads with drier ones.
09.05.2026: The seed started growing again, so I am pretty sure it was too wet before. The tip turned yellow/brown. Not sure what the cause is, it could be too much humidity, of course. But today the pads were a little dry, so it could also have been a little too dry. Sprayed some water. Will watch the seed a little more before planting. Later that day, asked AI about the situation. AI said to plant the seed directly, so it can get in touch with the microorganisms in soil, additives and trichoderma. So I did that. Kept the seed inside with a little light from an UV bulb. Will see how this turns out. The other seed also seems to have started germination.
11.05.2026: Nothing happened. The second seed is definitely not germinating, also it looked a little bit like it. The first seed has not pushed through the soil. If it has not pushed through by this afternoon, I am going to dig it up. I want a strong, healthy seedling, not a plant that is a failure from the start. Update: A few hours before I would have stopped this, she pushed through!
12.05.2026: She is growing, but the shell did not fall off yet.
13.05.2026: The shell is still there. Put a little bit of water right on it. 30 minutes later, she had gotten rid of it herself. So we are finally entering vegetation week 1. Phew!

SkunkyBreeze That germination phase was a true disaster! Only 2 of 4 seeds germinated. The first seed that germinated behaved a little weird. I surely made some mistakes. The cotton wool pads were too wet and I should not have put the first germinated seed out in the sun so fast. But on the other hand, I have never had such sensitive seeds before.
Speaking of disaster, the weather has been around 10°C lately with a lot of rain. So the plant has so far only been inside, on my fridge (it is a little warmer there) and only gotten the light of my 6.5W UV bulb. I had her under a plastic bottle to keep her wet until she could get rid of the shell. Now I removed it to prevent the spreading of funghi. At the edge of the pot it has about 70% RH, so I guess it is even higher directly at the plant, where the soil is moist.
So day one is a wednesday this time. Let's go for the first vergation week!
13.05.2026: Free at last! Let her stand under the plastic bottle til the end of the day, then removed it.
14.05.2026: It looks like she is growing slowly. During the next days, I will not have the time to do much. Weather is not supposed to be good. So my idea is to maybe water if the soil should get dry and let her do her thing until monday.
15.05.2026: She has grown pretty fast. Everything looking good.
16.05.2026: Took a look at the stem because I thought something could be wrong, because she had been bending a bit to one side. Everything is looking good. Watered with 100mL.
18.05.2026: She kept on growing in the last two days, everything looking good.
19.05.2026: Everything looking good so far.

SkunkyBreeze Vegetation week 1 was pretty straightforward, I only had the plant inside, so the environment was very stable. Indoor grows must be so relaxed! The plant is growing pretty much as expected, maybe a little slower than the Super Skunk last year. So far it is looking good. Let's go for second vegetation week!
20.05.2026: Second pair of leaves becomes visible. Would like to put her out in the sun a bit, but it is 18°C and cloudy. Maybe I can give her some sun today if it should come out a bit. Later that day, watered her with 200mL and put her out in the sun a little. Got her back inside in the afternoon.
21.05.2026: Sunny and about 20°C today. Put her out in the morning, will get her back inside in the evening. I want her to get used to the sun. It is supposed to be sunny and hot during the weekend and I want her to be ready for that.
22.05.2026: Sunny and about 23°C. Outside during the day, inside at night.
23.05.2026: Sunny and about 26°C. Watered her with 300mL. Added Sugar Royal and Terra Grow for the first time. Maybe I could have waited one more day with the watering, but it is really getting hot in the sun and I did not want to risk her drying out. Learned last year that water can be really important on the hot days. Measured the temperature directly on the soil. The device stopped at 60°C. So I watered with additional 500mL, just water, at the edges of the pot. A lot of that water just went down the sides though. Sprayed with a neem oil based solution in the evening to prevent bugs and powdery mildew.
24.05.2026: Sunny and about 27°C. Maybe I should have waited another day with the watering. She keeps growing though. Was a little worried because she did not grow that fast, but the growth from yesterday to today was pretty good. One finger is missing on one of the leaves though.
25.05.2026: Sunny and about 26°C. Definitely overwatered two days ago, the soil is still wet. Would have thought that the heat would make the water evaporate more quickly. Compared the photos to my Super Skunk grow last year. The Northern Lights is two days behind in terms of which leaves are already there. And the leaves are so much smaller! So it is not going so well. But I guess we will see at what height she will start flowering.
26.05.2026: Sunny and about 29°C. Soil was dry at the top, so I watered with 200mL.

SkunkyBreeze Vegetation week 2 was not was I hoped for. Weather was really good, but the plant did not grow as expected. The leaves are mostly there, but everything about that plant is small. Well, we will see what will happen. Maybe she will enter the flowering stage a little later in a normal size. I had this in my first year of growing, where I did everything wrong, the autoflowers started flowering after 6 weeks. Or maybe she will just enter the flowering stage in the end of week 3, that would mean a pretty small harvest. Anyway, we will find out. ;) Let's go for vegetation week 3!
27.05.2026: Sunny, weather report says 21°C, but I think it is hotter than that. New leaves are coming through.
28.05.2026: Sunny, 20°C. Turned her around because she is leaning to one side. Soil was dry, watered with 300mL. Right now it seems like she is drinking and growing pretty well.
29.05.2026: Sunny, 26°C. She has taken the turn well. Noticed a weak smell for the first time. Left her outside during the night for the first time.
30.05.2026: Sun and clouds, 23°C. She is growing well right now. Of the new leaves, one finger is missing. But the new leaves look more like an indica. Left her outside during the night.
31.05.2026: Sunny, 23°C. Still growing well. Watered with 300mL, used a little more Terra Grow (1.5mL/L). Sprayed the neem oil based product in the evening.
01.06.2026: Sun and clouds, around 21°C. Saw some bite marks on one leave and spotted a thrips. So spraying the neem oil as a prevention was definitely a good idea.
02.06.2026: Sun and clouds, 23°C. Last day of vegetation week 3. She is small, but I really liked the development in week 3. She grew a lot of leaves and is also standing pretty strong, the stem also has grown a lot.

SkunkyBreeze Vegetation week 3 is done and it went pretty good. The plant has become significantly taller and she is standing stronger than all other plants I had before, no wind could harm her yet! She is already beginning to develop some branches. I hope that we still have some time left before she goes into flower, so I can get a decent yield. Another week would be really nice, but I guess the flowering phase will start in the next few days. We will see. Let's go for vegetation week 4!
03.06.2026: Clouds and rain, 18°C. The soil would be dry enough to water, but there is supposed to be no sun today, so I will wait another day.
04.06.2026: Sun and clouds, 23°C. Watered with 300mL, used more Terra Grow (2mL/L). She is growing well right now and standing strong. No sign of preflower yet.
05.06.2026: Clouds, 20°C. It rained yesterday, so RH is higher now, about 60%.
06.06.2026: Sun and clouds, 24°C.
07.06.2026: Cloudy with a little sun, 20°C. Added some soil in the edges of the pot, so the water does not run off so easily. Watered her with 300mL with a little more Terra Grow (2.5 mL/L). Put some Trichoderma on the soil before watering. First pistils appeared, but are too small to be photographed. Sprayed with neem oil in the evening.
08.06.2026: Sun and clouds, 24°C. Pistils still too small to photograph.
