While I was finishing the last flowering week of Milkyway and Strawberry Gorilla, I started germinating 3 FastBuds autoflower seeds for the next run.
-Tropicana Cookies Auto
-Lemon Cherry Cookies Auto
-Gorilla Cookies Auto (not sprouted)
Why these strains?
Gorilla is a popular FastBuds classic with good yields, so I wanted to give it a try.
Tropicana and Lemon Cherry are genetically similar...kinda
One is bred from FastBuds cookie genetics plus Purple Lemonade (Lemon Cherry), while the other outsources its cookie genetics from Oni Seeds.
I’m expecting fruity and citrus flavors that I love, but I was also convinced by other growers’ reports.
Germination:
-12h in water with a bit of lignohumate
-keeping it in 24-25°C
-wet paper towel
-Gorilla Cookies cracked first, but then stalled and never fully germinated. I decided to continue with just two plants.
-after 24h they sprouted and were planted into the final pot
Soil info:
Pot: fabric 57L PurePot
Bionova 50L
Canna Terra Pro cca 15L
5L clay pebbles + 2L rice hulls + 2L perlite + 0.5L coco (for top layer)
1L vermicompost
5L of my bioactive mix (charged and inoculated biochar, aged in wormcastings)
mycorrhiza + trichoderma
frass
rock dust
The Bionova mix is already quite well pre-fertilized with vinasse, phosphorus, and dolomite. A slurry test showed it tends to raise pH.
So I didn’t add anything extra in terms of nutrients or minerals.
I wanted the bottom part to be more aerated, so I added rinsed small-fraction clay pebbles, extra perlite, and rice hulls.
In the upper layer I added a bit of coco and rice.
Frass was added only symbolically as a source of chitin (as a natural repellent, rather than as an NPK source)
The pot was still not full, so I had to buy another bag, and I think it ended up holding more than 60L.
I spent quite a while choosing a good local worm castings. I only found one Czech product that included chemical and physical analysis - vermicompost from Archlebov.

The Gorilla didn’t germinate, and I don’t think I made any mistake, sometimes it just happens...
So I’m continuing without the Gorilla, just Tropicana and Lemon Cherry.
A new addition is the Blumat Digital - a moisture sensor. I’m keeping it in the range of 75–85.
I started germinating the seeds on March 28, and I’ll count April 2 as day ONE.
The light is set to 30% of 150W.
For the first few days I’m still drying the previous harvest, so I’m keeping the temperature below 22°C and humidity up to 60%.
water:
for 5L destiled water
1g gypsum (calcium+sulfur)
0,5g epsom (magnesium+sulfur)
+drop of micro
+Ph down
Ph 5,9-6,1
EC 0,2 - 0,4
*watering:
(*first week by hand:)
For watering, I’m using a 25L reservoir, a cheap 12V submersible water pump, and the eWeLink app with a SONOFF BASICR4 Wi-Fi smart switch.
As a watering ring, I’m using a 9mm Autopot hose, into which I drilled small holes using a micro drill bit for PCBs.
With a full reservoir, I had an issue with siphoning - water kept flowing even after the pump was turned off.
I solved it by adding a blind branch to the irrigation line, which I routed up to the top of the grow tent. I fitted the end of this hose with an aquarium check valve installed in reverse so this side branch pulls in air (after irrigations stops), creating a safe anti-siphon system.

On day 18 I started training (LST).
Originally, I planned to top them, but in the end I didn’t have the heart to do it.
I was also a bit worried that day 18 - 19 might already be too late.
Pre-flower prep:
On day 20, I applied a foliar spray with Vitalic, a plant stimulant - lignohumate (humic/fulvic acids) enriched with nitrophenolates. It should help increase flower production, improve stress resistance, and keep the plants in a high-efficiency growth mode.
On day 21, I applied bacteria (La Calavera), which help with nutrient breakdown, especially phosphorus.
From time to time, I spray the leaves with kelp extract (Algavit) throughout the entire veg cycle.

pics from days 25 and 27.
I applied another foliar spray with Vitalic (lignohumates + nitrophenolates),
and about two more sprays with Algavit.
Watering daily with 3 to 5 cycles.

Day 35. Everything has grown beautifully, only Lemon Cherry still doesn’t want to mature.
Tropicana stretching out nicely and could probably fill the whole canopy on her own.

Here we go again. Preflower and at the same time yellowing at the top of the canopy and necrosis 😭
For a few waterings I increased the gypsum content because I suspected a calcium deficiency. Later I also tried increasing the Epsom.
By the end of the week, even though the Blumat was showing the substrate as moist, the plants had weaker turgor, lower RH, and I knew something was wrong...
When I cut open a piece of the bottom of the pot, dry dusty soil literally spilled out... 😱
I watered around the edges, removed the grate underneath, and increased the irrigation footprint.
The plants started praying immediately... so hopefully I haven’t completely fucked it up yet.
It seems like the center of the pot is well colonized and properly saturated, which would explain why the older leaves still look absolutely perfect.
I overestimated the capillary ability of the substrate. I thought the moisture would redistribute evenly, but at this stage the substrate is no longer a homogeneous mass. On top of that, after drying out, hydrophobic zones have now formed in there... it won’t be easy to restore such a fragile balance.
And of course, it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t sprinkle something on top, right... so I did a light top dress: a bit of wormcast, lawaworm, charged biochar, malted barley, and mix of various p/k guanos.
The top dress was applied after the deficiencies appeared, so I know it’s not responsible 😃
Oh and by the way, Lemon Cherry has already started flowering, so I’m officially calling it flowering now.
Tropicana stretched way more... looks like once again I ended up with completely opposite personalities.
Which I do appreciate, but it’s definitely not ideal for an even canopy...

I tried increasing the watering volume so that some water would pass through the entire profile. However, the water seemed to accumulate somewhere in the middle, while the bottom stayed dry.
This could also be related to excess magnesium. The leaf necrosis seems to support that theory - impaired calcium uptake or a calcium deficiency.
I decided to try bottom watering instead. I was a bit worried about it at first, but the pot soaked the water up beautifully, and I can see on the Blumat that it’s working well.
To help the plants recover, I also applied a foliar spray with calcium nitrate and slightly reduced the light intensity for a few days.

Day 56 (all photos)
I kept doing foliar calcium sprays, but honestly not sure how much they helped.
So I also added calcium nitrate to the watering, and I think that may have made some difference.
I expanded the beneficial fungi collection with Pochonia, mainly bought for the outdoor garden, but the Cookies girls got some too.
Toward the end of the week I felt like the soil may needed something extra. The first top dress was pretty light and I didn’t amend the substrate much.
So I finally tried the famous, beloved and hated compost tea. Mixed a few "P" Guanokalong products, beneficial bacteria and lignohumates together.
The flowers are developing nicely. Smell is pretty low, still no filter.
But they’re very frosty from the beginning, way more than the previous run.
I also added under canopy light (LED 20W bloom spectrum)
I’m thinking about what to do differently next run to avoid the calcium distribution issues, or yelloving.
I’m slowly starting to admit that 57L is probably just too little for organics and 2 autoflowers. If that’s true, then a soil test probably won’t help much.
Either it’ll always be on the edge, or I’ll have to settle for running just one plant...

Day 64
Lemon Cherry has a citrus smell, curious to see how she ends up. Not really a huge fan of these leafy buds though.
Tropicana is more fruity and, for me, has nice grow appeal. Both are producing short, round, compact flowers. Overall they don't smell much... still running without a filter. Luckily my neighbor's shoes stink so bad they've basically created a smell barrier outside my door. 😂
After two months of insomnia, switched to 19/5. Hopefully that'll help push the terps.
