Paper towel method hasn't failed me yet! Using Biobizz light mix and an 8L fabric pot with the sides rolled down. Keen to see how small I can keep this one as space is limited. Found my lights to be too close and powerful during my last grow causing Cal/Mag deficiencies - but can't back them up any further so the only option is to keep the plant low!
Germinated within a couple of days and transferred to the pot. It started to sprout upside-down but seems to have corrected itself.
Steady progress over the last week. No issues so far. Always find this part really exciting as we wait for things to kick off. Interested to see how this baby develops
So far so good. A bit stretchy in the stem it seems but I'm doing my best not to overdo the lights as those LEDs can be pretty harsh! Will move her slightly closer
I've been very slack with documenting any progress the last few weeks 😱 By means of an update:
I successfully applied LST from week 3 onwards. As many people say she was fairly slow in veg for an auto, but picked up quickly once she went into flower and the LST held her down nicely. Some really big fan leaves on this one but managed to keep things relatively compact without having to trim too much.
Week 4 - Some nice stretching. Preflowers came in at this point and the smell crept in. Carbon filter on 👍
Week 5 - 6 Continued to adjust the ties through week 5 when things started to slow down a bit. At this point leaves have started to show the dreaded cal/mag deficiencies. I started feeding very lightly in week 4 with 0.5ml/L Biobloom. I suspect the restricted root space has something to do with it. I've also put a film of clear plastic between the lights and the plant to refract the light slightly - Can't say these Sansi lights don't work but I think the beams are too focussed and cause leaf issues when exposed for long periods of time.
Week 7 - Things smelling tasty. My last grow (FB Fastberry) was slightly disappointing on the aroma front but this one seems to be living up to it's name, producing some nice tropical fruit scents when I brush my hand against the buds.
Deficiency problems continue to worsen throughout week 8 and 9. Lots of the fan leaves are yellowing and dropping-off as they would towards the end of flower, but I think a combination of root problems and those sizzling LEDs have lead to an inability to uptake and transport nutrients effectively. So far the buds are unscathed and continue to ripen. Fair few fox tails going on, producing new pistils, but the trichomes are edging towards mostly cloudy with a few ambers. At this point we've made it to the recommended harvest time! I'm going to give it another week if she can hold on then I think she's ready for the chop.
Aside from the deficiencies (which were no doubt my fault) she's been an easy grow and has produced well. I think this strain in more capable hands would have a lot of potential!
Buckle-in. This could be a long one...
Smoke ☁️
After a couple of tokes from the bong it creeps up behind the eyes and puts me into a beautiful dream-like state. It's smooth and sweet to smoke with very little harshness - surely helped along by a slow dry and a little curing. It tastes... classic. Nutty, earthy, and with a little hint of mango or pineapple on the exhale (sure I'm not imagining that). Subtle but pleasant. 7/10
Effects 🌈
The effects come on quite quickly. Akin to my early smoking days, it can feel as though gravity has suddenly been turned-up a notch as a comfortable body high kicks in. It makes my head swim a bit - in a pleasant way - and helps me see the world with childlike wonder as a grin creeps across my face. It's fairly easy to function and doesn't put me in a total fog like some strains. Perhaps that can be attributed to moderate THC and slightly higher CBD ratios. I'm a fan of the effects either way and would recommend it especially for first time smokers. 8/10
Duration/Use ⏱️
The high lasts for around 2.5 hours. Good for day and nighttime use depending on how you dose it. I would say it's easy enough to smoke in moderation if you're socialising or have things you want to do, but a few bowls and you'll be more closely aligned couch and giggling at every thought that pops into your head. There isn't much of a comedown with this one providing I don't smoke too much, but you may feel a bit forgetful the next day if you're not a regular smoker. 8/10
Smell 🍍
The smell of the bud is not super strong. I wish it were stronger because it's pleasant and quite moorish. There's a hint of sweetness and dried fruit, wrapped in a kind of saccharine-diesel perfume. If you break into it, there's a more pungent sweet and musky aroma. This one's not straight-up pineapple like some might suggest, but certainly some ripe tropical fruit in the mix.
N.B. It's worth noting that it's only been curing for around 4 weeks at the time of writing this. I'm looking forward to seeing whether things intensify further. It still has a slight straw-like undertone that I have noticed with other autos, which whilst not unpleasant, it would be nice for that to fade. 7/10
Appearance 🥦
The bud structure is very nice and dense compared to other grows I've done with the same setup (FB Fastberry I'm looking at you 😶). Plenty of calyx action. It also wasn't particularly leafy as autos go, so trimming was fairly straightforward. A nice covering of orange pistils look pretty against the pale green of the buds. It's not top-shelf bag appeal, but I'm happy. 7/10
Summary 📊
Overall this was a super easy grow. I made my life difficult by limiting the amount of root space and using some highly focussed LED lights, but the genetics of this strain seem strong and stable and she made it to the finish line even with my blunders. Extra points could be awarded for a more pungent smell, since I spend more time smelling the stuff than actually smoking it. The best part of all? It was a freebie! Thanks Barney's Farm 💪
