After 2.5 days germinating, they were ready; the 2 mint jellys had already shed their husks. Planted them in 4" pots. Unfortunately bugs for to 2 of the seedlings just after they sprouted which set them back.
Transplanted them to 5 gallon pots after tossing in some mycorrhizal inoculant and mixing into the soil. Watered them with pH 6.2 or so. Rainy week.
I covered the pots with chicken wire because my last outdoor grow, squirrels dug up the seedlings.
The fly paper is working well but I'm still picking bugs off a few times per day.
Mint Jelly #1 is thriving. MJ2 and moth man are still recovering from the pest attack in week 0.
The mint jellys showed first signs of flowering about 2 days shy of 4 weeks.
I flushed them to get flowering started right.
I topped MJ1 and moth man late in week 2, then topped MJ2 at start of week 3.
Moth man started showing signs of flowering towards the end of the week. Using Fox Farm Buds & Blooms and Big Bloom every other watering.
The fly paper is still working well but I still pick off bugs - spider mites, little caterpillars, flies etc - every day.
Mint Jelly 2 is stuck at 11" past several days. She was hit by pests as a seedling and then I may have topped her too soon (3rd node but she was still recovering from the bugs). But MJ1 is doing fine at 17" and Moth man is now 18" after a nice growth spurt. Moth man's flowers are about a week younger than the MJs.
Now having some problems with powdery mildew but I'm wiping the affected leaves each day with a damp paper towel which helps.
Mildew was caused by two weeks of lots of rain.
Moth man is now 22", Mint Jelly 1 is 18" and Mint Jelly 2 is 12".
Continuing to use 4 tbs /gallon Fox farms Big Bloom and 2tsp fox farms Buds&Blooms, every other feeding.
Watering them every day since it's been sunny.
So it looks like the mint jellys have slowed or stopped vertical growth and are busy fattening up the buds. MJ2 is stuck at 12", stunted, and MJ1 at 18" both affected by the topping... But moth man which was topped same day as MJ1, while she took time to recover, has really taken off and still going at close to an inch per day.
Notably, in my last grow (not in GD yet) I had a mint jelly which I didn't top and she hit about 25" by 6.5 weeks, yielding about 1.3 oz dry bud after week 10 harvest. So, the old debate of whether to top or not to top autos: It seems like if there's a long enough gap between hitting 3rd node and flowering, it's ok to top but the mint jellys start flowering immediately after she hits 3rd node.
This is only my 4th grow total and 2nd grow outdoors with autos, so it's always a learning process.
I was out of town for all of week 7 but my partner watered them w the hose each day and they're doing fine. Moth Man's buds turned a nice shade of purple while I was gone. She only grew 2 inches so I guess she's slowing down the vertical growth and fattening up on the buds. Weather is cooling down, in 70s daytime and 50s at night.
Moth man's buds got to be deeper purple, a really nice looking shade - this is my first time growing purple buds, which came as a freebie with my Mint Jelly order. They're not as frosty as the Mint jellys but still nice. The smaller MJ is just stunted, never grew vertically past week 5 at 11-12" but her buds are looking good at least. The bigger MJ is looking real nice but not nearly as tall as the moth man. I was out of town part of this week but they did fine. The mint jelly buds are green mostly, but some of the leaves are purpling. They smell amazing.
This was my second mint jelly grow. The two plants fared pretty differently; one stunted at 5 weeks, possibly due to the transplant, and she didn't yield much buds (about half oz dried) although they were fat. The other did better (about 1.2 oz dried) but didn't produce as much as I had hoped.
I got only 46.4 grams from the two plants, mostly because the smaller was stunted. But the buds look great and I'm happy with them.
Smoke report: Love the smoke. I can smoke a few puffs then be super productive whether working or whatever. I like smoking the mint jelly in a salad with the moth man. They smoke great together.
This is a pretty new strain from Gnome Automatics, I haven't seen any moth man grows on GD besides this one. I thought the buds were really pretty dark shade of purple, but they weren't frosty and I found I had to smoke more than usual to get lifted. She grew taller than the mint jellys and was vigorous except right after the topping in week 3. The buds were a little fluffy, not dense. I probably won't grow this one again because I'm looking for more trichomes and terps. But I'll def be getting other purple bud seeds in the future.
Only 23.7 grams even though she grew to two feet. The buds were fluffy and the smoke seemed like lower THC than other strains I've grown. But she's real pretty and I like putting the buds in a salad with stronger bud.
@Hellgirl666,Thanks! I only wish I had let them grow another 3 weeks or so, but circumstances didn't let me. But now I need to buy some more purple strain seeds!
@ZoobZoob_farmZ, thanks - if I grow Mothman again, I'll give her more time before harvesting and she'll fatten up a lot more. I had to harvest her at ten weeks because I was going out of town. She was my first purple bud and I can't wait to grow other purple strains!
