I’ve been waiting to get a clone of this strain from my friends, finally successful! Credit goes to the usual former GrowDiary slacker Max Pointy for the clone, but his brother who bought the seeds and started cloning. This is Bubblegum by Sonoma Seeds. This company seems fairly large, but is just not on GrowDiaries. The genetics are Indiana Bubblegum. Day 21 since being cloned. I had my pick of a small litter, which I was strongly recommended to let veg. longer before doing anything like transplanting. I said eff that and gambled, and transplanted... and lost. I did not see any roots and the clone wasn’t in that great of shape anyway. I shouldn’t have rushed it, and I shouldn’t have rushed a new grow diary. But I’m a man of conviction and will fully display my failings on cannabis social media. I completed the transplant using VPW20 soil, sheep manure compost, worm castings, a tiny bit of blood and bone meal, and Myka microculture. If this clone fails I may take from the other Bubblegum clones (my plan was to keep one and give two away to my other friends) and merge it into a new diary, or quietly delete this one in shame. If it grows, then woohoo! PLEASE be patient. My intent is to grow this strain alongside a Black Gum (Original Sensible Seeds) and directly compare.

Day 28 since being cloned. The good news: I believe this clone did in fact successfully root despite my early transplant. If you notice in the zoomed in side photo, the deficient and pink stem clearly ends and a small green/white portion reveals healthy growth. Slow but sure! I would also say the leaves have also improved. Yee hah. The bad news: I have been experiencing my first pest problem - fungus gnats. I have had a range of infection, this clone was attacked hard (or rather, the fresh soil). The flies love damp clone soil, let alone nice fresh amendment. But the problem is getting better... I have had sticky traps up all week passively killing adult flies. The rate has slowed. Secondly, I have been sanitizing using a spray bottle and pure moonshine (ethanol). My buddy made a still and moonshine to use for ethanol extraction and edibles. He has successfully used pure alcohol for pests. I have seen online many bad stories with peroxide or alcohol, but I am a few applications in without issue. The only effect has been desired, it kills adult flies on contact. I am likely killing microscopic life and sanitizing too. I am not saturating the soil, but I am lightly covering all soil, leaves, containers, tent, surfaces, etc. I am wondering if diluting alcohol with water leaves residue, or slows evaporation, and that is the common problem. I am using just ethanol. Ethanol evaporates (quickly) at room temperature. It evaporates faster than water. I think this clone has resisted the gnats and will be fine. Lets find out!

Day 35 since being cloned. This plant is growing veeeeery slowly. Slight increases in measurements, and a nice darkening green, but not at a rapid pace. Just be patient, and allow it to take hold. Water only at the moment.

Day 42 since being cloned. BubbleGum has........ mutated? My actual guess is nitrogen excess, however I have another clone I am giving away that did the same thing randomly on less nutes. The dark green last week and then random vegetation leads me to believe its nitrogen. I have recent fed (AFTER the mutation) a very dilute 24-8-16 All Purpose Miracle Grow plant food to my entire veg. tent to establish a baseline and stay ahead of deficiency. This one looks to be riding excess but thats fine, I don’t see any major Nitrogen claw. I’ll be patient and see where things are going... my Black Gum comparison is also going slow so all good on that front. Nevermind all the clones for adoption. The orphanage is overloaded.

Day 49 since being cloned. The plant has continued with the weird mutation stuff, and if it wasn’t because of nutrients a bit of overnuting won’t help. But I see the plant coming around with water and time. Some more normalish leaves seem to be forming. I didn’t transplant this weekend like many others, maybe next weekend. I feel good about it and decided to defoliate a bit. I cleared out the dead growth, as well as the funky pointless stuff. A bit more airflow and distinct branching. The last couple pictures show the before and after.

Day 56 since being cloned..... thats the extent of the good news. The bad news: this plant was infested in spider mites. I say was, because I think I will inevitably be victorious. For treatment, see below. You can’t really see in the first entry because I had watered the clone and then did my updates. In the very next week, you can see white spotting on lower leaves. These hitchhikers have been here for a long time! I have conferred with my source and they were likely stowaways before my tent. All through the fungus gnat infestation they sat under the radar. They were probably contained with the fungus gnat spraying. If you have ever done alot of cloning but especially monster crop cloning, sometimes you see funky, mutated growth. For most of this experience I thought the spotting was just funky growth. When I defoliated it became obvious. This may explain some of the slow cloning and growth. Spider mites automatically trigger contamination contingency plans. I defoliated much of the effected leavesI sprayed the plant with 99% ethanol for a couple days, especially the undersides of the leaves. Die, die, die! You can see what I have to assume are dead mites and eggs in some of the photos. I have saturated the plant with spray and will continue for some time. Be thorough and consistent. The only real side effect with the ethanol is brown splotches on the leaves where the alcohol doesn’t evaporate fast enough. I am either being adequately reactive and have solved the issue, or a damn fool for keeping Bubblegum.

Day 63 since being cloned. The spider mite spray seemed to have worked as I continue to take off damage and old vegetation. Sustained new growth is there. Finally, we will see what is actually up with BubbleGum! For so long the growth was sapped without me realizing. So I can be clear message me if you want clarification on the spider mite spray. The solution is not accessible for everyone. Now its just a waiting game for this plant to recover and start making some big jumps. It has other plants to catch! For now, it gets the corner of the tent, barely any room. The mite infested thing deserves it! Haha. Just water by the way.

Day 70 since getting cloned for BubbleGum. Sort of a trade off here. Firstly, my house is without heat until November 18th when I get a new furnace. Its November 10th as of now and snow has landed. Its getting frigid downstairs and this is effecting things... nutrient availability is the main thing. Plant growth is also slowed. Because I run my tent 24 hours a day it is like 18 or 19 degrees, but its much cooler near the floor and in the soil. Not much to do but wait and not over do it with moisture. But, this plant had a hard time with gnats, mites, you name it. So part of me thinks BubbleGum is like “all I have to deal with right now is low temperatures? Easy!” I am still spraying this plant, and the tent, now and again to ensure containment. I don’t imagine in an open system I can eliminate every one. But thankfully pest problems are behind me. Just Jack Frost at the moment... I repotted BubbleGum as it has taken positive turns. I used primarily HP Promix, but a bit of leftover VPW20 soil as well. For the first time since growing I was out of sheep manure compost, I need to buy more. But I had to transplant, oh well. We’ll see how we do without the manure. The mix was roughly 25 soil:5 worm castings:1blood and bone meal pellets:1 alfalfa meal compost:1 used dried coffee grounds:1 pulverized egg shells. I just rinse and dry the shells as I use them, and then pulverize them with a mortar and pestle later. I also threw in a bunch of Myke Herbs and Vegetables mycorrhizae.

Day 77 since BubbleGum was cloned. It was has been a long road but much of the growth has been cleaned up with regular pruning and care. This plant may just produce something! It doesn’t help that I still have no furnace until early this week. My basement is frozen, my veg. tent is just holding on as it is lit 24 hours a day. Ambient air temps between 17-18 degrees celsius. Growth has slowed overall and nutrient absorption low. This is a convenient time for B.B.G. to be just chilling in its new pot healing. Yet another obstacle... conquered? Just water as there is plenty of amendment.

Day 84 since BubbleGum was cloned. Not only has this been an insane journey, I finally have heat! My new furnace is installed and the tent is five degrees warmer. The plants have had five days to adjust and I have to say BubbleGum is really starting to grow. Its visible now - this plant is healthy! Side note: though spraying the moonshine seemed to discourage and kill gnats and spider mites in my tents, my moonshine source unfortunately works away from home for days at a time and could not overcome the time away - it is only effective with persistent, regular spraying. So, he was forced to resort to more proactive methods which I reaped the leftover/tail end reward, i.e. he came over and gave me some. 1) Grub Grenade - ordered online. Hard to tell if anything is even active, nor if it even works. We are skeptical but it was immediate help for him. (They have a website grubgrenade .com) 2) at the recommendation of Hellish, he ventured to Halifax Seed which is a gardening and specialty cannabis shop. They ordered him predatory mites - Phytoseiulus persimilis, by BioBest Sustainable Crop Management. These guys were definitely active, and visible! Good success for my friend, and a good proactive clean sweep for me. I can say confidently I have eradicated any problems, especially spider mites. BubbleGum of all my plants looks beautiful rid of all pests. The leaves are waxy and a nice green.

Day 91 since BubbleGum was cloned. Just water as I decided to transplant yet again, as I will have a bit more time before being able to flower this one. Not pictured are ladybugs I am hoping get established to help with passive pest control. Topping as necessary to try to get a more even canopy. The main mix for the transplant was 25 parts HP Pro Mix: 5 parts Fox Farms Happy Frog Soil: 5 parts worm castings: 2 ASB Greenworld Sheep Manure Compost: 2 ASB Greenworld Black Earth: 2 ETI Greenhouse Gold Seafood Compost: 1 Blood and Bonemeal pellets: 1 Green Gaia mineralized phosphate (guano): 1 alfalfa meal compost: 1 dried used coffee grounds: 1 pulverized egg shells; and Myke Herbs and Vegetables mycorrhizae.

Day 98 since being cloned. Bubblegum is starting to use the new amendment and I can see clear, new growth. Its been a long cloning process and pest repelling, so the stems and petioles are purple, streak, damaged, etc. So I expect visible jumps will be less clear. Just water due to recent transplant. Still plenty of time to veg., and I will consider taking my own clones soon.

Day 105 since BubbleGum was cloned. The funny thing is, if you are a sick or damaged plant you get more TLC and likely longer to veg., to your benefit! BubbleGum has now graduated to beast of the tent and is the biggest. 105 days is a long time! I’d throw it in flower if it weren’t for such a new container and amendment. Be patient. Just water and time. I’m loving the new growth, so much so I took a bunch of potential clones. This is a standard classic strain, it has to be good, right?

Day 115 for this BubbleGum clone. What a week it has been! Because BubbleGum is so large, it was generally oblivious. The low temps and nighttime dips were killing all my young plants and so I had to act, diverting my basement furnace output directly into my veg. tent, and installing a remote thermostat directly to the furnace. I’m still dialing it in so I don’t overheat my house or natural gas bill, and tweaking for improvements. So, this plant will start to adjust to more consistent temperatures over the next couple days. I expect subtle colour change.

Day 121 since being cloned. It is time! I am satisfied with this Bubblegum clone. It has had an outrageous roller coaster of a life, but has achieved a bushy status worthy of flowering. The increasing temperatures have done the roots well, and the vegetative growth has increased. The green is beautiful. I am limited with vertical height so it will force my hand anyway. Just water as it uses up amendment, and I will be extra careful with nitrogen heading into flower. Can’t wait to get the first whiffs!

Day 128 since being cloned. One week of flowering complete, eight weeks to go. So BubbleGum has been put into flower and stretching as I would expect. The joke is on me, as my other grows have been plagued with feeding and amendment problems and so BubbleGum comes in having vegged the same amount of time in the big pot and same mix - its a hot potato. As it stands, if I applied plant food at this point it would ruin the buds. Other plants have taken the hits and so BubbleGum will get no food for some time, after stretch for sure. I am irrigating with alot of water, the most recent being a flush, with the hope of making a dent into any amendment left. When I start to see some nice nutrient fade I will feel confident to feed with plant food. No nitrogen! My flowering lighting is alternating 300watt full spectrum LEDs identical to my veg. tent, and 96watts worth of yellow light targeting the 500-800nm range.

Day 135 for BubbleGum. Two weeks of flowering complete, seven to go. This was the flowering plant that I had yet to feed and thus not completely wreck. So far I’ve only watered during stretch - first, a major flush and then a moderate watering. I will eventually give some plant food, without nitrogen. You can see buds are starting to form. I also have a little prowling security guard. I’m suspecting maybe second generation ladybug (no spots yet)?

Day 142 since BubbleGum came to be cloned. Three weeks of flowering complete, six weeks to go. Unlike many of my other plants, Bubblegum is on track and rocking it. I haven’t fed any nitrogen since entering the flower tent, and heavy watering in stretch seemingly reduced the nitrogen in the soil. This past week I fed food: 0-10-10 Alaskan Morbloom, with a popsicle stick dip of blackstrap molasses, Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag), Earth Alive Big Blue Wave. I’m trying to be decent with watering habits and so I’ve let it dry out a bit and then will alternate with water before going back to that feeding again in later weeks. The branches seem healthy and the nodes seem spaced nicely. Last three pics are: middle two plants, whole tent looking towards the more progressed in terms of flower, whole tent looking towards relatively younger plants.

Day 149 since being cloned. Four weeks of flowering complete, five weeks to go. Bubblegum is looking great! Nice bunches of bud all the way up the branches. I defoliated and tried to open the plant up without going overboard. My most recent plants, with other larger problems, would have benefitted from air flow. Its like a pendulum, you get burned lollipopping early, and then you go back the other way leaving all veg., until you dial in balance. Just a faint sweet smell so far, I would say respectful to the name. However, it remains to be seen if that smell (flavour) is something I would want to regularly vape. The plant is nice though, with a massive stem. Its been just drying out all week since plant food, and I’ll alternate back to water given my recent troubles, before feeding again.

Day 156 since cloning Bubblegum. Five weeks of flowering complete, four weeks left! Everything is looking fabulous. The smell is increasing, really sweet, but light; bubblegum! I fed today, 0-10-10 Alaskan Morbloom with a popsicle stick dip of blackstrap molasses, and Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag), and Earth Alive Big Blue Wave. I did a good amount of defoliation to increase airflow and light. So, my good pal MaxPointy, too smooth for GrowDiaries, but the guy has some talents and various skills. Now he is making light pods from scratch. Real snazzy, with a 3D printed hood, and the attachment plastic (the purple) is all thermochromic ink which turns clear at 46 degrees Celsius, giving an added layer of monitoring. Each pod is 50watts of warm white LED which targets the yellow/red spectra ringing in at around $30 Canadian. This diagram is an approximation of wavelength.

Happy Harvest Day!
Rated
8/10

This is BubbleGum by Sonoma Seeds. The genetics are Indiana Bubblegum. This regular clone was from a friend of a friend who had the seeds, and the lineage of cloning off of that. This particular clone lived in multiple tents and had a long pre-life. Came as a small, yellowed plant. Likely had spider mites before I received it. Dealt with fungus gnats and spider mites, not even realizing the latter, until eventual recovery. It wasn’t completely resistant, so mid range rating, it did need maintenance. Once it got healthy, it was on! Great mid stage to late stage vegetative growth. Good leaf formations once it hit its stride. I used soil amendment but in hindsight too much. Other plants slightly after Bubblegum, including a plant fatality, revealed the veg. time as not enough and the soil too hot. If you consider how much leaf was growing in and through the buds - this is nitrogen! Clearly, Bubblegum can tolerate high amounts of nutes. The liquid plant food did not help, but better managing soil amendment would improve this grow greatly. This plant also had some experimentation time under 10/14 lighting. I was trying to see what that effect was on flowering and yield. Flowering is certainly triggered faster, but yields likely down. So, I expect this could be a large yielding variety. The smell while growing was a very light sweet, perfect description is actually bubble gum. It had no sharpness or snap to the aromas. However, tastes upon vaping are more herb/musk/skunk like; not quite cheese-like, I feel that may be misleading, but its not as far from cheesey as you’d think. The deep undertone is sort of sweet. Perhaps with longer cure the palette changes. The effects are lovely. This is an indica for sure. While I don’t feel the immediate crushing body and eyelid weight that something like Hash Plant provides, I find Bubblegum makes me tired. Not couch locked, I’m articulating sleepy tired. This is a good pre bed variety, I find it is the polar opposite of insomnia. Trichomes seem to be in abundance. The buds are covered in crystal. I have clones going already in flower, and really like this strain. I expect it could easily climb in ratings if I correct the numerous mistakes. And this one didn’t turn out that badly anyway!

I gave around 24 hours of darkness before harvest. Wet trimmed. Nice process, lots of work, no issues. I bud washed before hanging to dry. That is, dipped and swirled the buds in a container of baking soda, lemon juice, and water. Then dipped, rinsed, and swirled in a container of just plain water. Then hang. I included some crude up close shots not for quality sake, but to show the product is still beautiful and intact after washing

@@Aiiogrow,yep. Just to be clear: its an ethyl group alcohol, just typical moonshine you make in a traditional still. Fractionally distilled to 90+% ABV. It seems to have saturated and killed the mites with regular spraying, especially under the leaves. If it gets really wet it does need some air circulation/fan breeze. It doesn’t evaporate that fast that it can’t cause damage if soaked. It does kill gnats on contact, but it seems to be more effective at discouraging them more than anything. That, combined with other measures, also worked with gnats. Like if you water and have flies that emerge, you can have the alcohol spray ready to fire. It will kill some, injure some, discourage some, etc. It is a consumable though, I went through alot getting on top of all the problems. You have to be content making large quantities, which my source is.

@@BeanswithPork, 🙏 Will try that next time I dabble with soil.

@TheUsualSuspect, I noticed the soil matters, alot. A really light, good draining soil with small particle size is perfect. If it has mycorrhizae its a bonus (otherwise gotta add microlife). That has to be the bulk lest you risk poor drainage, too much nutrient, other problems. It also has to be available in bulk and affordable. Sunshine Soil #4 or HP ProMix soil is reliable. Mostly peat moss and perlite.
