So, this week Dr. Grinspoon showed a couple of things. Most importantly, this plant appears to be pretty sensitive to water. It barely drinks anything for a plant this far along (in comparison with Skunk #1, White Widow, Northern Lights, etc). I'm pretty sure all of the leaf 'ugly' is caused, ultimately, by too much water (ie, not a nutrient deficiency/toxicity, and definitely not pH). Could even be bacterial leaf spotting (from too much water). Normally, I would expect to be putting a plant near this age and size into a larger slab already and be ready to got to 12/12. That would be a mistake here. The roots really don't have that jagged/aggressive growth that I've usually see in 'hybrids'. I keep the rockwool very judiciously watered by hand still. Anyhow, it is 13 inches tall and has almost outgrown all of the ugly. It's an otherwise healthy plant. I can't believe the creeping pace of development. I expected as much in flower, but not so much in veg. One of the pics shows a Neville's Haze in the foreground for comparison. Both were germed on the same day and sprouted at roughly the same time....and both are really taking their sweet time.

Hey. Loving the diary, thanks for sharing. I'm following your grow with great interest as I sowed my Grinspoon a week before you. It's my first ever grow, ordered the Drs by accident (don't ask), and I know they're a difficult grow but giving it a shot anyway. They are sensitive to watering aren't they. I've had some major droopage but just let them dry out a bit and they came round. I've flipped to 12/12 now at 5 weeks because I read they'll at least triple in size while flowering. My leaves appear to have much longer stalks than yours. Would you have any idea why that would be? Could they be stretching outward for more light? Like I said I'm a newbie so reading a lot and trying everything in small amounts. Keep up the good grow man.

@neilmac1210, Thanks for the comment. There are a couple of things going usually; genetics and environment. I grow in a rockwool and have a very consistent technique I've used for years. Once you dial in rockwool/hydro it's always perfect....almost every time. Every once in a while, you get a strain or some genetics that just don't do well with 'normal' amounts of water. Of course, we usually discover the water sensitivity by getting droopy leaves with bent tips. The leaves never recover, but the plant can continue to live and develop, but it may also be stunted. Because I deviated from my usual technique a little and to see if I may have just gotten some bad genetics in that one seed, I popped another Grinspoon seed a few days ago. It is not stretching nearly as much as the one in the pictures. As far as why the stems/petioles/branches appear thinner than yours, I'm going to assume you are growing in soil. I've notice that my seedlings stretch a lot more when germinated in rockwool than when germinated in soil. It doesn't affect the overall productivity of the plant. There are some myths that I've been reading on the Internet for years. Seedlings stretching for light is one of them. They don't stretch for light. They stretch for other reasons. I know this because I have watched my plants stretch so much that they lay down on their sides for a few days. They stem just gets so long and white looking. After a few days, it darkens and the plant begins to stand up. This all happens under 400 watt MH lighting, so stretching for light? I don't think so. Anyhow, all of that stretch that can occur when the plant is a week to 10 days old,, will all be sucked back up into the plant, proportionally. 2 - 3 inches of stretch is nothing for a plant that will eventually be 3 - 6 feet high. These sativa genetics seem to not only take forever to finish in flower, but also take forever in veg. I happen to be growing a Neville's Haze side-by-side with the Grinspoon, and it is impeccable, in terms of any kind of blemishes or problems. The Neville's haze is also not a heavy drinker. I've grown some strains (skunk, chemdawg) that you just can't believe how much water is consumes as it is stretching. A 3 foot plant might consume 1.5 liters per day. Cannabis, more than many plants, will show drastically different phenotypes based on environmental input. Growing indoors and outdoors are not nearly the same thing, as far as how the plant is going to look, how big it is going to get, the quality and strength of the smoke, etc. One important thing to keep in mind is that the plant's need for water will changes. It will stop consuming a lot of water a few weeks before harvest. Also, if you defoliate, remember that removing leaves removes the plant's capacity to photosynthesize and it will not consume as much water after getting a haircut. Thanks for following my grow. 👍

How's the grow going?

Impressive. That stretch has definitely gone wild! I’ve been following since the very start. Great job bud! I just planted a seed of this. Let’s see what happens!

Cool to see someone is growing this strain here! This is a strain I personally want to grow for a while now, but I want to better my growing skills first :-) Will follow.

Wow! That's more than twice the size of mine at the same age. My plants are currently 60cm. What are you feeding it? I did some defoliating last week as I'm short of space. I don't really want them to grow too high for the same reason, but I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong. How many nodes do you have on your main stalk?

PanaJackcommented6 years ago
@neilmac1210, Today the height is 170 cm and there are about 12 nodes (I removed a couple when it was a seedling). It's has stretched a lot and has started to flower. I hope it does not grow any higher, but I think will. I'm at my limit for headroom. I'm growing in rockwool slabs and feeding Flora Nova nutrients at about 1150-1250 ppm (250 of that is from the tap water). If you are growing in soil and/or using less than 600 watts HID, I'd expect your plant to grow a bit slower. My setup tends to finish plants at least a week ahead of schedule (what the breeder specifies).
