Starting indoors for my summer outdoor grow!
I'm doing all "regular" (as opposed to feminized) seeds, and I've got a delta leaf labs cannabis sex tests on the way to me.
This is the "giveaway grow" -- these are all giveaway seeds that I got from other orders, and I figured I should give them a fair shake. Both sound interesting Penelope Pussy is a Skunk #1 x (GMO x OGKB bx) that's from a Vermont local breeder called Sherpa Seeds, and the other just sounds like a mix of "good stuff" -- I mean G13 is a classic that I've never had the chance to try, and I like haze crosses, and why not cross it with a sour diesel. Nice.
Got 'em started in coco coir, and I'll transplant into soil. I need to hit up the hydro store for some fabric bags and maybe to shop for some soil. My main fear is that the soil brings in pests, which would suck because these plants will share the tent with a DWC grow for about 40ish days until they go outside.
They popped! Into the tent on 4/11 or so.
Not a lot to say other than I'm worried about the coco coir since I've never really grown in it. Giving it just plain water the first week and then I'll use a light nute solution until I transplant.
Waiting for second set of true leaves before I clip the cotyledons for the sex test.
Note: they're sharing the space with this grow: https://growdiaries.com/diaries/139739-grow-journal-by-cheetobreath until they go outside (likely mid may)
I think I've been keeping the coco too wet. Trying to let it dry a bit and finally get some nutrients in them. Feels like a bit long without nutes, but if they're too wet it's not going to help me.
Little mold related to that, hit the surface with a little diluted hydrogen peroxide.
They're looking... semi shabby. Actually writing this entry a couple days late, and they've perked up, and greened up a little bit. I definitely don't know what I'm doing with coco and I need to transplant these as soon as is reasonable. I was going to wait until the leaves were wider than the containers. But... maybe I should just do it now.
I did the delta leaf sample and sent it off on 4/28. Hoping for lots of girls!
Sorry shit for photos this week.
Transplanted! Now in soil. They're bouncing back.
Delta leaf received my samples for sex testing. Can't wait to get the results, I need the space back!
This diary is coming about a week late.
Got em moved outside!
Got results back, first round of testing. Two for sure males, one of each variety. Looks like a likely one more at least, too. So maybe I'll have three outdoor ladies.
Had to leave for a week, have my lady looking after the ladies. Got kinda cold (42f or so) hopefully it doesn't bother them too much. I needed the space in the tent, so... They had to go.
Topped at five nodes. Well, I fimmed one of the Penelope Pussy plants, and topped two others.
More genetic testing in... One more male. Two confirmed females. The other looks probable for female. One more round of testing.
Transplanted to 15 gal pots.
Still not feeding yet. I'll give em another couple weeks. This soil is hot as it is. Watering with rainwater from my rain barrel.
Looks like they're coming back from the top and repotting. Never looked unhappy, but, growth was slowed down for sure.
I'm going to give them another week or so before I start adding nutes. Some of the soil was more saturated than the rest, so 1/3 is kind of in a different state of needing watering. They'll eventually even out.
Got the test results back... 3 females confirmed! Not bad. 50/50 split, can't be unhappy about that. Still need to compost the male. He's been hanging out without watering or anything, and... appears to be fine. Amazing
Happy with how it's going! I looked at old photos and these seem 3-4 weeks ahead of my plants from last year, which is amazing. Even if they seem... dinky for now. Last year is a bad example, I bought starts late in the season.
My FIM on one of my penelope's was... like a missed FIM. Bummer. I decided to LST the top of it with a training wire. We'll see how that goes.
Haven't fed yet. I think maybe next watering I might start the feed now. It's ocean forest soil and it's supposed to be hot.
LSTing the FIMed penelope, because I missed the FIM. Plants looks generally healthy. The g13 cross has some funky curled new leaves, I wonder if it was overwatered at one point and had some root gress? It's only a small percentage of the plant (5%?).
Started feeding this past watering. Fox farms grow big + big bloom, half strength, approx 550ppm, at 6.3 pH.
Trying to LST my missed FIM, she's going strong.
Plants overall ok. Slow to dry out and some cold nights. Still seems to be a full month ahead of where last year's outdoor run was. Excited by the prospect of that.
Not a lot to report otherwise, these seem so slow compared to my hydro runs.... So, alas, I wait.
Changed up my feeding a bit, looked up PPM for soil grow for the first time ever, previously -- purely winging it. So, used a chart from royal queen seeds, went for 900 PPM, fox farms grow big and big bloom, half dose then upped grow big to get to 900. Let's see how it goes. Feeding every other watering, and it's been taking a little while for her to dry up.
The one plant with the missed FIM, I've been LSTing her top, almost a supercrop to get some extra tops coming up. Sorta working, finally. It's like a popsicle, not much on the bottom, lots on the top.
Finally the missed FIM is starting to bush. It's so top heavy.
Using lost coast plant therapy kinda regularly. Primarily preventative. Occasionally get a chewed leaf or something.
The g13 cross is the strongest plant kind of. But the missed FIM Penelope is a nice looking plant with fatty fan leaves.
Fed again yesterday (7/11) at 900ish ppm. FF grow big and big bloom.
Everything seems mostly OK. Although all the plants have some wrinkled leaves, which I believe is from transplant stress at some point. They're slowly growing out of it, and seeing that they're better than any of my previous outdoor plants... I can't complain much.
No big updates. That G13 cross remains the belle of the ball, somehow that one responded super well to the top, and the PPs wound up looking somewhat wonky.
