I pinked the MJ seeds after reading a bit online. I was really excited by their comments about bag appeal, and I'm also a toker that looks more to terps and taste. It sounds interesting. The purple haze were freebies that came with the order (from north atlantic).
Sprouting in rapid rooter cubes placed in a tupperware. both seeds popped extremely quickly. I think the mint jelly seed popped in less than 24 hours, and i didn't soak ahead of time!
sprouts were fully up on Sept 23, so I'll call today the first day of week 3. Precipitates were building up in the tanks, plus I only had sampler sizes of the Lotus nutrients. In addition, a couple of smaller burn spots showed up on the lower MJ leaves. Thus, I bought an Advanced Nutrients kit and used 10 ml/gal for the first round. I didn't ph the water kind of on purpose just to see if it still worked. I am using an RO filter, so the water is 0 or 1 ppm to start with.
The MJ looks healthy, but it's got smaller leaves and is also twice as tall as the PH. there were a couple of small fertilizer burns on the oldest set of leaves, but the plant stabilized, grew immediately, and now looks incredible after the nutes were switched to sensi grow. It's maybe 3 inches tall.
A few big changes. First is that I completely burned the plants with nutes. i was just following the grow guide, but both plants went sideways on me. As a new grower, it wasn't obvious at first. However, i think the location of the burns on lower leaves at the ends, plus a quick google search that showed a lot of autos are sensitive, and then it got resolved. I went down to 675, and the burn slowed down but did not completely stop growing. A last change to 470 or so ppm, and now they are stable and growing like crazy.
Second big change is that flowers just started showing up on both plants. Maybe that was due to the stress of the nute burn, but it is also just starting into week 4.
updated with day 28 photos. Plants knocked ppm from 465 down to about 120.
It seems I've finally fixed the nute burn. It's interesting that both plants were incapable of taking over about 600 ppm. Once lower, they really took off.
switched on the red colors this week to 25%, and will up to 50% today. plants seem to be handling the lights no problem. inside temp hasn't been above 78.
switched to flowering notes. Just kept them very low so overall, PPM was about 500.
welp, still learning and growing here as a new grower. First off, I need to either a) identify some strains that are short or b) figure out how to switch photoperiod strains to flowering early so that they don't get too big. I decided to preemptively top off the tallest cola from the PH. it was 8" taller than all the others you see in the photo and was too thick to try bending down with some low stress training.
did a lot of LST on the top couple branches on the MJ, but the PH kinda stopped growing after I emergency topped it. hopefully i didn't mess them up by training/topping so late. fully emptied tank and topped with fresh nutrients. went up slightly in concentration this round.
day 49 update: i did nute burn them last week with the 8ml/gal bloom, 4ml/gal others. i reduced to 5 and 2.5 ml/gal, which helped. The MJ also clearly is a bit more sensitive than the PH, so i'll start making separate notes for each.
Still a lot to learn. I will probably not ever try to grow two different strains at the same time. The MJ is much more nute sensitive and seems to not tolerate anything above about 550 ppm. The PH, however, managed to take 2 gal of nutrients at 625ppm and reduce it to 290 ppm in only 24 hours, even though the water level barely dropped. Light is at 100% both on the veg and IR flower LEDs, and the plants still seem to be able to tolerate it.
will switch out the Big Bud in exchange for the Overdrive later this week, but keeping the bloom A+B, B-52, and bud candy at their 6/6/3/3 ml/gal levels.
also, i turned out the LED and used the flash on my phone this week. the photos do look a bit better with this setup.
the issue the last 2 weeks or so has been the presence of what I think is light burn, plus nutrient burn on the MJ. both are still doing ok though, but now I turned the lights down to 75% vis and 75% UV/IR. hopefully that helps. I'm giving the MJ ~350 ppm nutrients (a 50/50 mix of the above with RO water) and the full strength above to the PH (~675 ppm). we'll see how it goes. Some of the trichs appear cloudy on the MJ so maybe it's getting close.
-removed a few leaves to help with air flow, but otherwise it's ok. Humidity has been steady at 50%. temps have not exceeded 79 or so during the day, and it's getting below 70 at night. might be helping bring out the purple in both of them.
-nutes are down to about ~560 ppm.
neither plant is absorbing nutrients. For example, the MJ got 1.5 gallons of 250ppm nutrients 2 days ago, which is already very low, and then today it has about 1 gallon left at 400ppm. So, it drank a gallon of water but ate nothing. It is now getting just pure RO water. The PH only stopped absorbing nutrients in the last 2 days, so I'm giving it half strength nutrients. My plan is to go another 5 or so days, then switch both to pure RO water for 2 days, then harvest.
Chopped both plants on day 71. MJ buds are the left half, and PH buds are the right half. trichomes were about 90% cloudy with a few amber ones here and there.
did a wet trim. photos are all on chop day before I did any trimming. was extremely easy to trim. plant suffered from nutrient burn, and possibly also some light burn (photons not from heat though), for at least the last few weeks. it's a miracle that the buds turned out so incredible. strong lemon smell on the chop. very sticky resin all over the scissors.
