Week 18 - 2 February 2019

We had a very hot week with day temps gong up to 42deg C and think lowest 34degC. Today a very mild lower 20's with thunder storms ... what a blessing. However the extreme heat and strong winds had a toll on some while others are doing great and look happy.

Ok, so I had some issues with some of the plants all of a sudden this week - possibly the heat causing issues. I have some yellowing of leaves with brown blotches to some of my plants. Other plants had droopy healthy looking leaves - like over/under water. I googled deficiency issues but can't say 100% that is the cause. Some look like potasium deficiency or nitrogen burn, while other plants have a general yellowing of bottom leaves. Possibility is the heat is causing a varied nutrient lockout situation. If anybody can give me some insight as to what then I can see what to do to prevent further casualties. Next week gong to be a scorcher again.

Plant #12 died. I can only guess excess heat. I pulled the plants from the bag and noticed black ants crawling around. I then inspected the soil by taking handfulls of the soil from the bag. The soil was still slightly moist. Must say the top inch was bone dry but further down was still moist. However no ants in the medium - so couldn't have been them. Anyway I can only guess the strain (remember it's bagseed !) can't handle the heat - then it's of no good to me.

I water the plants once a day coz of the heat with rainwater and solution 1ml / litre Biobizz Grow. I pull one of the bags out the ground once a week to check that I'm not overwatering. Before I give the plants water I pull a bag and check the underside if moist or dry or soaked .. but usualy they're cool and moist (not wet) with no standing water at the bottom of the second waterproof bag.

Grow Questions

Hi. Please help me make up my mind re the sex of plants BS#3, 4, 11 & 17. I've included close-ups of the nodes. I've identified all the others as female - just like #15. I'm almost sure they're male - as their preflowers show, I just need the confirmation to pull them.

i I see Balls on 3a and 3b, and maybe 4b................................................And i think 4b, 11 a, b, c, are female ... it is getting clearer if they are bigger. Males are like onions and very round, females are more oval. If you are unsure, add more pics in the next days to look

Ooo new question. Have a look what's causing the discolouration and blothing on my leaves. Read my weekly writeup to grasp what was happeing the week. I googled nute deficiencies/toxicity but it's all confusing me now. Thanks a mil
Leaves Leaf Edges Appear Burnt

Hi @Simsalabim! Sunlight activates photosynthesis and the more sun the plant gets the more nutients it will require. Basically, your plant is consuming loads of nutrients due to sunlight and pre-flowering stretch. She needs more Nitrogen and probably some other elements such as Magnesium, Zinc, Copper... You can increase BioGrow up to 2.5ml/L and add a teaspoon of epsom salts in your solution, this should help her for the next week, but be warned she will soon ask for P and K while entering the flowering stage. Nutrient uptake is probably slow because of the lack of container so you can also consider foliar feeding, this should prevent the deficiencies to spread, but avoid spraying anything once the preflowers are out. Hope this will help, keep us up-to-date and happy growing :facepunch:

When I Google deficiencies / toxicity I can compare some phosphorous deficiencies to your leaves and find out that the symptoms are the same so I would say phosphorus (P) deficiency with the rust part on your leaves , what you called brown blotches. The 2nd deficiency you have is a potassium one (k) as you can see some of your leaves have the edges that are starting to turn brown which is the 1st step then rust spot appears and a discoloration happens. 3rd observation : if the soil is still moist but the leaves are really droopy then it is an over watering issue , the symptoms of an under watering are the same but with a dry soil. 4th on the Bs#18 I can see the lower leaves yellowing which mean you have a nitrogen deficiency. To finish my answer I give you a link to a deficiency / excess chart ( in the comment section) that will allow you to find your issue or at least compare the external diagnosis you get from the Community :v::skin-tone-3:

@SpinnerCaribbean, cool thanks. Will check it out.

@SpinnerCaribbean, Had a look. Could also be excess K - dark green leaves w burnt edges. Deficient K shows light green leaves. Anyway, like I said I get confused looking at these charts. We have been having very hot weather last week - 42degC - 107degF... so was thinking could be related. Nute lockout on the one side causing excess on another... me thinks.

@Simsalabim, Ok glad you had a look even if it's true that I can be confusing ! The weather might have play a role too

You could fry putting some containers full of pebbles etc around the base of the plants and fill with water...they'll cool the plants while evaporating. Also dont let them dry out(but of coarse don't over water them) those are the few heat remedies ive heard of for outside

@ExperimentGREEN, Thx for your response. Yes, I read about containers with water & pebbles but that won't work for me as my garden is about 500m from any water point and will be too much maintenance. Most of my other plants are handling the heat - so the one's that perish are just not made for this environment... then they must just perish. Remember the ones that show the discoloured leaves are all bagseed.. so they're sacrificial in my eyes.. I'm just learning from this experience.
