First ever grow starts now! Low expectations for this run. Aim is to grow a healthy plant and learn for a bigger grow later in the summer. Anything smokable at the end will be a bonus!
The seed began to show signs of cracking open after approximately 24 hours in the water.
After about 36 hours we got a little tail. We’re pretty sure the seed is good at this point so planted it in an 11L fabric pot, left outside to do its thing.
There was still no sprout after 3 days outdoors in soil so added a homemade humidity dome to see if that helped things along.
The first set of leaves sprouted the next day. 4 days after planting, 6 days after dropping the seed in water.
Thunderstorms rolled through and dropped the temperature significantly. Moved the pot into the plastic balcony greenhouse to keep it dry. Humidity dome is off and only a couple of sprays of water every second day.
Was concerned I had overwatered initially as the seedling sprouted with only the cotyledons showing but by Day 3 the first set of fan leaves began to appear.
Had a couple hours of light rain on day 6, then about 50ml of water around the edges to try to encourage the roots on day 7.
Still a very small plant. Better weather due next week.
Better weather this week. Soil stayed damp for a while after the light rain last week. Dried out on day 10 so gave it approximately 200ml of water in a circle around the seedling. Same on day 12. Second set of leaves started to appear but still seems small.
Thinking I need a much lighter soil mix for my next run. But that’s what this first grow is about: making mistakes now so I don’t make them later.
Moved in and out of the balcony greenhouse because of heavy rain and storms. A few cloudy days with not much sunlight. Still watering approximately 200-300ml every couple of days when the soil feels dry. No nutrients yet. Another new set of leaves beginning to show. Hopefully growth picks up a bit soon!
Better weather this week. More time on the balcony, less in the greenhouse. Started nutrients on day 23 and watered until runoff (approximately 2 litres). Same on day 28.
Getting more concerned about the lack of growth. I think the soil is too dense but nothing that can be done for this plant. Already got some perlite for the next run.
Back in the greenhouse to shelter from the rain for most of this week. Took a bit of risk by using a small gardening fork to break up the soil a bit. Was gentle as possible but at this point I’m willing to risk some root damage if it leads to better growth before flowering starts. Fed with approx 2 litres water on day 34. Still very small for its age. Not expecting much of a harvest from this one but I have the space so I’ll let it run.
Game over for this one. First little hairs are beginning to show so that’s probably it for growth. I’ve got the space to keep this going and maybe get a couple of grams out of it. Hopefully better luck with my Northern Lights grow!
Early signs of flowering. Started adding bloom nutrients as well as grow. I am traveling at the moment so can’t check up on things. Will be interesting to see how it progresses until I’m back.
Back from traveling. Plant has grown a little in height and definitely flowering. Doing better than I expected after two weeks without nutrients! Slight smell but only from right next to the plant.
Little bit of progress this week. Still feeding nutrients with every watering but the soil is so wet I’m only watering every four days or so. Top dressed with some leftover coffee grounds to add a little dry nitrogen. Maybe I’ll get a whole gram dried by the end! At least trimming won’t take long.
Hotter weather this week. Feeding more regularly however the soil has never truly dried out ever since planting. Lesson learned: add perlite. Buds are still filling out. Hashtag two more weeks! Maybe.
Not much change this week. Trichomes are cloudy but not amber, and still a few white hairs showing. In general this is not a healthy plant! There are only a couple of whole fan leaves left and given how stunted it is there is no prospect of big yields. Last feeding was two days ago. My plan is to let the plant run through the next couple of days of sunny weather then harvest whatever I can get so I maybe a get a little treat when harvest time for my other plants comes around.
