Germination

NateLay This time, I tried germinating the seed directly in the Jiffy. I let the Jiffy soak, then placed the seed inside. Unfortunately, after 6 days, there was still no sign of life. It looked like I had kept the Jiffy way too wet. On the second attempt, I let the Jiffy soak, then gently squeezed out the excess water and loosened it up. I placed the seed about 0.5 cm deep. After around 5 days, the cotyledons appeared. Two days later, the taproot started to grow out of the Jiffy, and the first "real" leaves showed up.

NateLay Once the taproot had grown out of the Jiffy, I decided to transplant it into the 11-liter fabric pot. After that, I watered with 500 ml. Three days later, another 500 ml followed. From this point on, I’m counting the first day of the vegetative phase.

NateLay Day 8: I watered with 750 ml of tap water. Once the plant is ready to handle a liter or more, I’ll start adjusting the calcium and magnesium levels using Bittersalz and Biobizz CalMag. I’ll also lower the pH to around 6.5, since our tap water is usually between 7.5 and 7.9. I still have the light set to 40% at a distance of 40 cm, which should equal around 360–400 PPFD. I plan to increase it to 60% (~550–600 PPFD) once the Jack Herer—currently about 10 days behind—has caught up a bit. Day 12: I decided she was ready for her next watering and could use some extra nutrients. Since it’s my first time using this soil, I applied a reduced dose of Greenhouse Feeding Bio Grow at 1 g per liter of soil. I also optimized the water quality and lowered the pH from 7.8 to about 6.5 using pure citric acid. To correct the Ca:Mg ratio, I used the FUMUS calculator and supplemented with BioBizz CalMag. In my last two grows I noticed deficiency symptoms, so I’m being proactive this time around. I watered until I saw a little runoff, then weighed the fabric pot. The roughly 10 L of soil held about 4 L of water before any drainage—which I think is great. I’ll re-water once the pot has lost roughly 50 % of its total weight. Light intensity increased to 60% (~500–600 PPFD).

NateLay Week 3 of vegetative phase has started. I am thinking about topping her. I am not sure if I want to top over 3. or 4. Node. Day 15: Up to 22,5 cm. Healthy looking and strong. The stem is getting bigger and the branches are growing good as well. I think I also will defoliate some of the leaves that cover the branches. Will update as I go. Day 16: Today I deciced to do a little defoliation. It breaks my heart to remove these huge fan leaves, but the branches underneath were completely covered and didnt get the light exposure and also no room to grow. Day 17: Watered with 3 l, water was adjusted with Bittersalt, CalMag and Citrus Acid for pH.

NateLay I think even the 1/3-dosage of the additional Greenhouse Feeding Grow was a bit to much. With the help of Google I would think, that she has a little bit to much nutrients (Nitrogen?) as the top of the plant is brighter and the mitd/bottom leaves got darker - also the edges of the leaves look a little burned. I think that it is not a big problem or something that needs to be dealt with, so I just let it be, it didnt get to worse so I thinks its fine. Day 21: Some LST. Day 22: I startet the day with watering. I used about 3,25 liter. The tap water was adjusted with Bittersalz and CalMag (BioBizz) and the pH was adressed with citrus acid. I decided to top and keep the first 4 nodes. I have no time restriction or hurry, so I decided it will be better to get an even light distribution over all the canopy and also give the second plant (Jack Herer) time to catch up while recovering. This is my 3rd grow. I did top in the previous grows but much sooner. This plant is by far the biggest and fast growing plant I had so far. I am/was a bit worried about the hollow main stem, but I read that it can happen. So lets just hope she will recover fast and dont get any infection or anything else 🙏 Day 23: Just the regular visit and some training... but I realised that the clips I used to bend her down and do LST with, had sharp edged and the growth was so fast, that I decided to remove the clips (I was thinking that would occur during the stretch and not so fast) anyway... I managed to cut/break one of the main branches 😱😫 The branch was almost cut halfway through. I used tape and wraped the branch back into position. I hope the branch will recover from that. (see picture) Day 24: Again today just opened the tent to see if the branch is alive or not. So far its looking good - about 24 h after the accident the branches color and over all look is good. I hope it stays that way. Did some light LST via hand and placed 2 of the "better" clips on the top branches to try to even the canopy level. 👌 Day 25: In germany we have a saying: "The marmot greets you daily", but for me or rather the plant it was no good use. I snapped one of the main branches while training her. This time it was almost completely broken 😭 Lucky me... the duct tape was in reach. I tried my best to "stitch" her together. Day 26: I am not 100% sure, but she might actually be able to heal/repair and recover from both broken branches. So far the plant overall but also the two snapped branches look healthy in terms of color and shape/behavior. But I did remove 2 bigger leaves that got dry/crispy. Maybe the damage was to much and the branches are slowly dying 😥 I will see how the next days go. Today was also time to water again. The soil was pretty dry and the ~ 10 l soil managed to hold roughly 4 l of adjusted water. My plan is to let 3 days pass without any training and see how she overall looks. Then I would do a defoliation and maybe also remove the smallest and weak branches that will not make it to the top canopy level. Let her recover 2-3 days and then flip to 12/12.👌

Topping at this stage? How long will take to recover befor stwiching to 12/12? I am thinking about topping above 3. or 4. Node or if I should let her be, give her a defoliaten (what would you remove?) and flip to flower in 3-4 days? Thanks for your thoughts & happy growing!

I generally recommend topping only after the fifth node, because I feel the plant isn’t strong enough before that point. I also top autoflowers, since in my experience it helps prevent mold. When I don’t top, I usually end up with one large main cola — and that’s exactly the part most prone to mold. Topping doesn’t just split the main cola; it also encourages the side branches to grow more vigorously, leading to several big colas and a more balanced canopy. Feel free to check out my grow diaries to see how I do it. Keep in mind: topping is always a form of stress for the plant, and every strain reacts differently. That’s why it’s important to ease into it and observe how your plant responds. After topping, they typically need around 3 to 4 days to recover. Only then should you consider flipping to flower. I personally keep my plants in veg for about 4 to 5 weeks before initiating the flowering stage. But you can also top now — after the fifth node — then wait another 3 to 4 days before switching to 12/12. Or wait even a bit longer if you like. The great thing about growing is: the one true rule of growing is that there are no hard rules. As for defoliation: I usually start around week three and then do a bit here and there as needed. You can remove a few large fan leaves to open things up, but don’t go overboard — the plant still needs enough foliage to thrive.

NateLay Day 29: Today it was time to water again. I also decided to do some defoliation and remove smaller branches that were falling too far behind the main ones. I gave approximately 4 liters of pH-adjusted water and used Bittersalz and BioBizz CalMag to get 3:1 ratio. I think I could have pruned a bit more, but I’ll let her recover for 2–3 days now before switching to flowering.

NateLay Flower Day 1 (Day 33): Light cycle switched to 12/12. Lets see how the stretch will be. 3 Days prior I did some defoliation as seen in the last week of vegetation. I still think I could have removed more leaves, even branches because its still pretty crowded. Now I will just water and do LST. I plan on lollipopping at day 21 of flower where I will do more defoliation and remove the smaller popcorn buds. Lets see how flower will go. Round about 9-10 weeks left.

NateLay 03.06.25: Another week has passed. The second week of flowering has begun. I watered with approximately 3.5 L of adjusted water yesterday. Since switching to 12/12, I have had to water every 3rd or 4th day. I did some minor defoliation because there were too many leaves. However, as seen in the picture, I think I could have removed a lot more before going into flower. Now I really don’t want to cause too much stress. I will continue to do light LST and just water for the next two weeks. After that, the stretch should be over, and it should be easier for me to see which bud sites/branches I can remove. 07.06.2025: After 4 days it was time to water again. Almost 4 l of adjusted water were given. Its the first time that I am using these pods and I have to water a lot more often then with the "regular" plastic pods. I did some defoliation because it was pretty crowded in the tent.

Plant getting lighter overall. Thought it was N deficiency. Since N is mobile, expect older leaves to fade first. But its more the top/whole plant. Using Floragard Grow Mix w/ Greenhouse Feeding Bio Grow (1/3 dose due to pre-fertilized soil). Bloom fertilizer was added yesterday.

You don't show stats in diary or at least updated ones. Same stats for several weeks. She has looked stressed her whole life, most of pics look over watered. You have to have her basic needs met to avoid stress, correct PH, Light, feeding, watering, temps, humidity, airflow, she needs defoliated for one. If you verify it's not related to her conditions then its a deficiency. Any pre fertilized soil would be depleted by now. The pre fert soil I use needs feeding at week 3 of veg.
