Ohhh ho ho, I am very excited about this one. If you know me well you would know I get excited about each and every plant. However, there are new strains, or widely different strains that introduce new fun. This is Hawaiian Puff from Lucky 13 seeds. I have been waiting on the clone I received as a gift not only for it to take, but also because the company mainly sells regular seeds and I was awaiting word if this was a female ... its a girl! The genetics are Blue Hawaiian Sativa x Godbud.
I transplanted into a container with a mix of 10 parts HP Pro Mix: 5 parts worm castings: 1 part Fox Farms Happy Frog soil.
My lighting is a 300 watt full spectrum LED, with a smaller pod that is 1/6th the amount. My tent is hung mylar in an unfinished basement with direct furnace input and output ventilation in summer.
This is day 31. The clone is looking a bit shocked, still trying to start to photosynthesize and push out green. I’m not worried as it has plenty of root structure.

Day 38 since Hawaiian Puff was cloned. This was off a regular seed which is apparently female. Just slow progress this week. It was sort of yellowed upon starting the diary and so energies were spent trying to repair itself. Unlike many other grows, not really any major temperature concerns because it was nestled amongst some larger, bushy, mature plants. Just water and time for now, folks.
Day 45 for this Hawaiian Puff clone. What a colour transition this week, just slowly absorbing nutrients and becoming more green. This plant is on a shelf and a bit warmer, but overall I moved some large plants out and air circulation had improved. This is one I am very excited for and so this little bit of progress is exciting.
Day 52 since Hawaiian Puff was cloned from a regular, female seed. Quickly advancing symptoms this week as the plant has apparently run out of amendment. My full tent has slowed my transplant rate. When I went on vacation for a few days I was hesitant to feed and then immediately leave, and so I let it progress all week. Since returning I did feed 18-18-21 Miracle Grow Tomato food, Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag), and Earth Alive Big Blue Wave, but things will take time. Improvements or not we will know next week.
Day 59 since Hawaiian Puff was cloned from a regular seed. The week was slow as it absorbed food and tried to deal with the imbalances. These things take substantial time. Last night I transplanted so that is additional shock, and even more plant food. I expect it will be a little shaken even into next week but over time will rebound. Stay tuned.
I have been dealing with soil amendment in flower so I have diluted the mix a bit. I also filled the bottom with HP Pro Mix and only used amendment to side fill. 40 HP Pro Mix: 5 Fox Farms Happy Frog: 5 worm castings: 1 ASB Greenworld Sheep Manure Compost: 1 ASB Greenworld Black Earth: 1 ETI Greenhouse Gold Seafood Compost: 1 Blood and Bonemeal pellets: 1 Green Gaia mineralized phosphate (guano): 1 alfalfa meal compost: 1 pulverized egg shells.
Day 66 since Hawaiian Puff was cloned. Adjustments to the new container are over and major growth is beginning. Lots of green leaf matter. Things are looking good and I will just be feeding water. I’ll be attempting to clone as it off branches. Spring is approaching as I noticed the temperatures are up. Right on!
Day 73 since Hawaiian Puff was cloned. Steady progress, no issues or concerns. I felt confident tying it over finally, a single LST tie. A nice bend on the main stem. I was able to snag two clones as a result of this. I will continue to give water and allow the branches to adjust and grow vertical. Still some time left to veg.
Day 80 since Hawaiian Puff was cloned. Everything is looking good and this green, creeping plant is gaining size and mass. I have tied another main branch and really embraced LST with this one. This used to be my go-to technique. Just slight defoliation which is reflected in the picture before the group shot. Still irrigating with water for now.
Day 87 since Hawaiian Puff was cloned. LST has really been established and there are many solid tops. The plant is fully adjusted. It will be easy to take clones as I go. Lots of time to veg remaining. I still would only be giving water as needed.
Day 94 since Hawaiian Puff was cloned. Things are looking fine. The container is massive so it is hard to get a sense of the size of the plant (the size of the roots). Just chugging away using up nutrients. Only water to this date. I will feed if necessary if it starts to drain and I don’t have room to flower. I am just waiting to clone and massively defoliate. I need way more space.
Day 101 since Hawaiian Puff was cloned. I am just continuing with veg as the container is large. Running out of nutrients so I plan to top dress with some worm castings and blood and bone meal to buy some time, but not until after taking these pics. Still delaying. I do have one successful clone so no pressure but there will be plenty more. Space is always the issue. As I kept cutting the large fan leaves it has pushed out smaller ones, much more a pain to trim haha.
Day 108 since Hawaiian Puff was cloned. I top dressed early this week with a mix of BX Pro Mix and worm castings, and a small amount of blood and bone meal. At this time of photo, it had only receiver one irrigation of water since. I gave a second dose of water today.
Day 115 for Hawaiian Puff. Still irrigating the top dress down into the container with water. It still looks perky, I took some clones this week. I’m sensing flowering coming on soon ...
Day 119 for Hawaiian Puff. Quick turn around for update because the time has come for flowering. The top dress is likely run out, the plant is drying out every couple days, still green, lets go. I will give water through the stretch and then start the flowering food. After photos I took off the lower branches and trimmed a bit.
Day 129 for Hawaiian Puff. The distributor says average 9 weeks, and then in the description mentions 11 weeks, so lets call it 10 weeks. One week completed, 9 weeks to go. Good stretch to begin with. There is still lots of soil amendment in the top dress so it will only get water during this period. Flower food will come in another week or two.
My flowering tent is hung mylar DIY like my veg. tent, but a bit bigger at 6’ x 4’. I have two 300 actual watt full spectrum LEDs and 96 watts of yellow LEDs supplementing the spectrum.
Day 137 for this Hawaiian Puff clone. Two weeks of flowering complete, eight weeks to go. Lovely stretch, and this plant is content spreading itself and growing. I haven’t fed yet, only water thus far. A long way to to yet.
Day 143 for Hawaiian Puff. Three weeks of flowering complete, seven weeks to go. I love the flowers that are already formed. The strain seems pretty good. I fed this week, 0-10-10 Alaska Morbloom with a popsicle stick dip of blackstrap molasses and Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag).
Day 150 for Hawaiian Puff. Four weeks of flowering complete, six weeks to go. Apologies upfront for picture quality - its been a busy week of real life work, cannabis chores, upgrades, and pest management. I’ll reflect the lighting change next week, but as temperatures rise it exposes pest management. It was time to completely go through my tent, even in flower, clean, defoliate, and spray down with a little 90+% ethyl group alcohol. This plant in particular was the most infested, and had the longest to go (still). It had deceptively spread through the bushiness. Yes, I’ll take the hit of the trichomes I dissolved and the stress to the plant, so pests don’t get out of control immediately under the new light. In flower, I’d like to keep to the proven strategy of lady bugs, but the local provider is a couple weeks out of supply, and moving around amongst businesses is complicated these days. Thus, bad photos in my garage (I was taking the task seriously), and the disappearing vegetation. I fed after photos 0-10-10 Alaska Morbloom, with a popsicle stick dip of blackstrap molasses, and Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag).
Day 157 for Hawaiian Puff. Five weeks of flowering complete, five weeks to go.
A general address: finally reflecting the new high pressure sodium flowering light. This replaces the LEDs in my 6’x4’ tent. It is a 600 watt Vivosun HPS setup! Still adjusting to the benefits and drawbacks compared to LED, for example taking photos. I have experimented with plastic filters and have been shown some cheap products, for now just taking pictures with my phone with “dramatic” effect seems to be the best combination of colour and resolution for now. I’m not lugging them in and out based on the location of my tents. I will also shout-out to Hellishjam and BudXs 🤙🏻🇨🇦 who are constantly supportive and encouraging.
As it was food last weekend, it has only been water once, and approaching food again as there is lots of time left. I have probably sacrificed yield with the massive defoliation, and it looks like the pests are as active and infective as ever, but its not touching any other plants, and now the buds are more exposed to light. Since getting the HPS, Puff has just been oozing resin. Its a strong diesel smell.
Day 164 for Hawaiian Puff. Six weeks of flowering complete, about four weeks to go. I don’t see any cobwebs are anything, but it appears infested, no? I thought the leaves had powdery mildew, I can’t wipe anything off, it looks like damage. Its hard to tell under the HPS. This plant isn’t touching any other. Still swelling a bit and the buds are certainly dense. A rank, diesel like aroma coming off. I fed this week, 0-10-10 Alaska Morbloom, with a popsicle stick dip of blackstrap molasses and Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag).
Day 171 for Hawaiian Puff. Seven weeks of flowering, three weeks to go. Coming off a feeding it looks like it will get one more before flushing. Last irrigation was 0-10-10 Alaska Morbloom with a popsicle stick dip of blackstrap molasses and Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag). I just want this grow over with, the pests are just annoying to look at. Guess what suckers, ladybugs are less than a week out. Time for the buffet. Like coming off a two week long trip at sea and needing a hearty meal.
The buds were limited by defoliation, but they are dense! Harsh, fuel like smell. Like if you took Black Indica and doused it in gasoline.
Day 178 for Hawaiian Puff. Eight weeks of flowering complete, two weeks to go. Nothing has changed (for the better) in terms of my mite infestation. Ladybugs arrived midweek! They are trying to get established and I am rerouting them as much as possible. Unfortunately, these things take time. Its excruciating, but believe it or not, you can’t really direct ladybugs to heatseek mites. It will happen over time. I will probably change things up in two weeks and heavily budwash, hanging, and then dry trimming as different order. I’m just going to start flushing away here as there is only two weeks left and I won’t gain much trying to feed. Pictures are going to be limited as I don’t have motivation to be in there.
Day 185 for Hawaiian Mite. Nine weeks of flowering complete, I had projected one to go. The distributor’s website has a large window, and so really I’m not chopping that early if at all. I’m not too worried about dark/light given the state of it, so I’ll likely wait until late evening to night and get harvest on. Mid week I covertly put this plant as well as a few others outside to be continued to be picked clean by the ladybugs, and other predators in general, and to let mother nature deter the mites. We had severe thundershowers one day and that helped disintegrate much of the cobwebs. Its interesting, this plant was likely the main outbreak yet was one of the least colonized because of the stripped foliage. I mean its bad, but not the major cobwebs like others. I’m going to do a big budwash and I’m hoping I can salvage some bud.
As stated I implemented a moonshine spraying in an attempt to get on top of things. After things got bad, I released ladybugs which is my favourite treatment. And I used the outdoors.
Cleaning off the residue was still an obstacle so I once again relied on budwash. This time, I added a first step which was more harsh, maybe scrubbed some flavour, but achieved peace of mind.
Container 1 - 20 Liters of water, 1 cup of Hydrogen Peroxide, 3 tablespoons of lemon juice, 3 tablespoons of baking soda. I dropped the crowns in and any bud I wanted to salvage, fan leaves and all. I agitated them around and let them soak while I trimmed.
Wet trimmed in between.
Container 2 - a bowl of 3 tablespoons of lemon juice, 3 tablespoons of baking soda, and water. Agitate in this container for a few seconds.
Container 3 - just water, rinse the buds off.
Then I hung to dry as usual. Tons of trichomes left on the final product as you can see. I really found Hawaiian Puff was popping long after I took pictures and it continued to dry out.
