The plants were showing evidence of nutrient burn. After reading about Fox Farms Ocean Forest soil it sounds like this is a common issue at this stage. I decided to reduce nutrients to zero with only some light calmag.
Topped the plants in the photos without light. Reintroduced the Fertmax A&B at 2.5 ml/gallon every other watering, and maintaining calmag dosing at 3-5 ml/gal every other watering. Am I using too much Calmag? I hear these girls like it a lot, and they seem to be doing great! It's a very stout and bushy plant. The undergrowth is getting pretty thick. It actually had 7 nodes at topping despite only being 8 inches tall.
It took the top meristems about a week to recover from the topping. They are very bushy plants. Even after trimming a bunch of fan leaves and a few branches they are still looking very filled out.
I switched the light cycle with a day or two left in the week. Early in the week I changed to Fox Farms nutrients. The plants never looked amazing after a dosing of the Fertmax nutrients so I decided to stop early in the week and just use the nutrients that Foxfarms pairs with the soil to avoid further issues.
The week is going super great. They were moved to a tent at the end of the last week. The plants look beautiful and the buds are growing fast now. I honestly can't tell if it is smelly any longer because with all the time we are spending at home I've grown accustomed to the smell. When I rub my fingers on the buds there is a very strong skunk terpene scent.
The plants still looked high on nitrogen so I only fed lightly once during the week. The back plant is more stretchy than the front, and is producing smaller buds. They seem at this point to be distinct phenotypes. It will be interesting to see which yields more.
I need some help. So, the top plant in the photo looks fine and the front plant is experiencing some severe issue. The light intensity was ramped up during flowering mainly on the lowering plant which is showing the deficiency. I have since backed off the lights to 22 inches.
When the issue was first observed about a week ago the pH of run off seemed low around 4.8 so I flushed with a gallon or so of water. The pH of runoff has since been normal around 5.6 to 6.0 when watered with 6.2 to 6.5. So I've continued with light cal mag and half dose of tiger bloom as that seems to be the type of deficiency that is occuring.
What is strange is that aside from the lighting difference the two plants have been given the same food. The plant with the deficiency has bigger buds that are noticeably more ripe.

The issues that started around week 4 on the smaller plant have largely stabilized after raising the lights. I'm still seeing some deficiencies on both plants that I think are genuine deficiencies because the pH in / out hasn't been too worrying. pH going in has been around 6.5. Usually the runoff is around 5.5. I've been alternating between watering and feeding. My feedings haven't exceeded 1.6 EC. It seems the plants have just been hungry for food.
The buds are very frosty now. Their odor is sweet like cupcake frosting. I don't think the small plant is going to need 10 weeks to reach maturity. The top buds on the smaller plant are already dense and about 70% red hairs. The larger plant is only about 30% red. I'm targeting 9 weeks for the small and 10 for the large. The fact that dispensaries are now closed and my black market connection is dry unfortunately is a factor.
Doing some light defoliation to remove dying fan leaves and to expose the basement bud sites. I started the week with one last light feeding, and then I'm going with only water from here on out. Fingers crossed all goes well. 😎🌵
Coming up on a week of flush and the end of 9 weeks of flowering. The leaves look truly miserable at this point. It's a bit agonizing to watch, but I keep reminding myself that the buds look shockingly great given the situation with leaves. I probably could harvest now, but think I'll leave them for one more week.
Looking good and smelling better. I have not harvested yet, but I've sampled some flowers after a flash dry in the vape. It definitely does the trick and is firmly on the indica side of the spectrum.
Day 67. I decided to early harvest the side colas that formed off the main 4 branches of the 2 plants. It's my first grow so I am interested in comparing an earlier vs later harvest so thought I'd take this opportunity as well as expose some of the lower buds thats were blocked by the dense patch of colas in the middle of the plants.
Comments on growing:
Vigorous growers in veg that grow as much horizontally as vertical. I started with only 120 watts and slowly ramped as they grew. I eventually lowered the lamps which stunted the small plant from too much light. I was able to correct the issue, but I believe I could improve by keeping the lamps no closer than 2 feet. I also believe the nutrient demands were higher than what I provided. I have 3 large clones of these plants that I accidentally flowered and revegged. On round 2 I will up the nutrients and pot size to see if I am correct. Overall, I was impressed these plants grew such abundant and beautiful buds despite my inexperience and mistakes.
At Harvest:
What I have previewed so far has been strong and very much an indica buzz. Early tests in the vape have put me and others to sleep. There is definitely a cerebral head buzz at first with plenty of kick, but overall it leans toward a relaxed, chill, sleepy, body high.
Start of cure:
There are two dominant smells: cracked black pepper and berries. Hay smell is already absent after drying. The tall plant is almost exclusively a hashy pepper smell while the smaller has both pepper and berries. They taste earthy, cinnamon, and floral. The high is strong.
After trimming at the start of cure there is 252 grams of jarred herb and 88 grams of sugar leaves and popcorn buds that will be made into bubble hash.
Will update strain review and flavor when the bud is cured.
I harvested this morning. I will update on yield and quality later. I'm super pleased with the results of my first grow. I now have an abundance of sticky buds that cost me very little to produce. I can't wait to try them after curing. Happy toking!
They have now solidly cured for 8 weeks at 62% RH. The smell is phenomenal, they are sticky as hell, and taste great. The buds are actually quite dense. I stand by my 10 star review. This is a kick-ass strain. Very potent. Berry, hashy, peppery, sweet goodness.
