These girls were transplanted from a failed DWC experiment. I was able to extract without too much damage to the roots thanks to the rapid rooters. They are now in Cyco brand Coco + Pearl in 1 gallon pots. Starting pH a little low and going to build up and see where the plants like it. The Mars light is down to 200 watts, from it's factory 310 watts, and these poor girls are stressed at the moment but they'll bounce back as you can see 4 days in, they are just bursting!
Seeing slight deficiency on PSK (Purple Star Killer), the GDPs (Granddaddy Purple) seem fine. Leaves look a little curled upwards on the GDP (but very green), but could be due to fast growth, turning off the fan for a day or two since we defoliated heavily. They were topped to create a mainline (topping at 3rd node after 5 nodes of growth, and defoliating the bottom), the two new nodes are starting to develop after they were stunted for about 36h after the cut. The Mars light is down to 200 watts, from it's factory 310 watts and I plan on continuing that way. PSK suffered a bit of a wound in its main leafs at the stem, I think it will be fine - if not may need to prune it in a few days.
Mid-week update:
- Leaves have 'relaxed', I think it could have been the stress of the mainline, plus the fan. The fan is back on, but pointed it more towards the floor to create indirect movement.
- Moved the light down an inch from 21" to 20", and propped up PSK as it's shorter than GDP by an inch.
- Girls are really bouncing back after the initial shock of the mainline. I ended up trimming that busted leaf on PSK, as it was just not holding. Doesn't seem to be affecting growth too much just looks weird.
- I ran a few days of higher pH (6), and PSK (Purple Star Killer) does NOT like it at all! It's showing more deficiencies, so we went the wrong way with our pH I think (sober reminder: people on the Internet will sometimes mislead you). Going to stay low for now as it looks like mineral deficiency possibly Iron, or Zinc. Hope it improves, really looking forward to this strain just having some issues dialing it in.
- GDP is just f'ing happy.
End of Week 3:
- Real happy with all the growth of the GDPs. Time for transplant, seeing lots of roots in the bottom
- Going to start LSTing them new branches from the mainline already early week 4! Dang!
- PSK did not respond to extra calmag this week or fluxing up the pH, think I need to go higher with the micro + grow (A+B) and lower the pH further down to 5.5 for a couple of days and see how she responds because she's looking kind yellow on new growth and wilty on the old growth.
- We ended last week with a transplant. 2 days later we LSTed the new branch development.
- We're seeing major deficiencies in PSK, and one of the GDPs is showing signs of yellowing. I think we've narrowed this to a P+K deficiency. Upping my Micro + Grow (A+B), and lowering pH to 5.5 as nutrient uptake is higher for P+K (especially K) at 5.5 rather than 5.7-6.0. Think I need to stay lower for these girls, they really do seem to like the lower pH.
Mid-Week Update:
- PSK has been bouncing back with her high nutrients and lower pH big time! Her leaves are much closer in colour than the other two, and seeing less deficiencies. The lack of nitrogen also explains her stunted growth. You can clearly see in the defoliated images how much less beefy she is. I'm still keeping her on the same schedule as much as possible, but looking forward to seeing her growth now that I've tuned her in better. She really like the 5.5-5.6 pH area at the moment, and the added A+B (micro/grow).
- So happy with the results, we topped them all for a second time, and tightened up our LST a bit help create that nice.
- I bet this time next week we'll be looking at much bigger plants! Really interested to see if PSK can do some catch up (lower right in photos)
Lessons Learned:
- Take advice with grain of salt. Just because everyone yells CalMag, doesn't mean it's CalMag.
- They are hearty girls and can take a beating and come back twice as big and strong!
- Nitrogen deficiency will cause stunted growth and rusting. Also newer growth will look quite yellow compared to old.
- LISTEN to your plants: If you don't see subtle improvements within 12-24h of a change it's likely not your issue (especially in coco or hydro apparently). Extra CalMag for a week did squat. However lowering your pH for a while to 5.5-5.6 and upping the A+B did wonders for PSK. GDP didn't like the low pH and started to get wilty and is happier at ~5.8-6.4.
- Running two strains in one tent is interesting, but definitely a learning experience. Seeing one thrive, and one struggle on the same feed and regiment schedule is both neat and frustrating. They obviously will now be getting strain specific nutrients, or pH. I will be sure to detail my notes.
End of Week Update:
- I've resorted to 2 different pH feeds for these girls, but same nutes for the time being.
- I've been fluctuating GDP between 5.8-6.4 as it doesn't seem to like the very low pH. I think we can stop at 6.4 as the pH will drift throughout the day to 6.5.
- The PSK has been getting a low 5.4-5.9, and does not like the high pH. She seems quite happy these days, foliage looks real green again, new growth is good. She's going to be a shorty, I think I need to prop her soon.
- Run off on all of them is always in the 6.5pH and the EC 0.900-1.000 area, and about 25% run off and it takes about 2 minutes to start to trickle out, and 5 minutes before the bulk has been released. Three feedings a day: 500ml in the morning, and afternoon, good feeding one hour before bed at 600ml.
- PSK is really stunted unfortunately. So stunted when trying to do some LST work one of her colas broke off because she is just stubby and thick. :( Going to just leave her for a bit. Really might just let her run free from here on out, she's difficult to train, and gets stressed out easy. Not sure if it's this plant, strain itself, or simply my inexperience (though GDPs are looking great IMO). Next time I'm running this strain alone to better dial in.
- PSK EC runoff is really high these days (~1.3). We've flushed her with some pH'ed 6.0 water for 24 hours instead of regular feeding to bring down excess nute build up. We want her in the 0.800 EC zone at this stage, think she's overfed now because of her lack of growth compared to the GDPs.
- GDP is just growing like a beast as mentioned. We did a little flush as I was seeing light nute burn on some of the new tips. EC was way up to 1.3-1.4, which is too high at this stage of the game. They got two flushes which brought them down to 0.860 EC, and I'm going to be backing off on my nute feed and re-adjust. Look for week 6 nutes levels, these are too high. Think I was trying to overcompensate for PSK, but looks like less is more.
Lessons learned this week:
- Less is more sometimes.
- Check your runoff EC more often.
- If your plant is stunted be extra careful when training, or consider minimal to no training.
- PSK was LST'ed and defoliated a bit.
- GDPs are looking very good, adjusted the LST I did last week up the node so we can get more spread from the nodes.
- Plants are pretty happy. Taking runoff of EC often, as nute buildup in medium was a bit high! I have diluted the nutrient solution. I think when we switched to the 5 gals bags it took a bit for the coco to absorb the nutes, but now there are plenty of existing nutrients in the medium. So I'm giving them a bit of just water here and there too.
- One of the GDPs got a bit stunted for 48h post topping, but the other girl didn't feel it at all (this seems to be a trend, consider cloning your stared GDP as she's definitely a grower and would be a great mother!)
- Light is at full power because the plants were not getting enough canopy coverage now that they are getting big. So I moved it up a couple of inches, and turned up to 315 watts (factory setting).
- Feed has been about 0.800 EC or around 450ppm, and PH has been fluctuating between 5.4 and 6.4, and doing 0.2 increase/decrease throughout. So if I feed 5.4 in the morning, I'll go 5.6 in the afternoon, and 5.8 by evening. Next day I'll go 6.0, 6.2, 6.4, and then start back down again. This seems to be working well, plants look happy with this!
