coccinelle April 29, 2020: Germination Setup 3:00 PM: After washing my hands thoroughly, I place the seeds (without touching them) in saucers of tap water (left out for 24 hours to let the chlorine evaporate). They all float. 3 Quick One + 1 Royal Dwarf + 1 Royal AK Auto from RQS. I find them small and very dark (but I don’t know much, so it might be normal). 11:00 PM: They are still floating. I put them between 2 small plates with a folded paper towel underneath and on top. I moisten both with a clean spray bottle and rainwater that fell 2 days ago. After a few days, I see that one of the 3 Quick One has germinated poorly: this seed was bigger and the root was very curved and re-entered the seed, so I had to gently pull it out with a toothpick. In the end, this seed didn’t produce anything (a few days of life as a seedling then dead). May 1: Planting Preparation of the 4 pots of 15L: Wash all the containers and tools with water. Bought for 6 euros/pot + 2 euros/saucer. They should have been taller than wide, but there weren’t any. Mix of about 50L in a clean large garden bin (for 3 pots): • 50% peat (150L 17 euros) • 10% garden soil (not sure this is a good idea as it may contain pathogens) • 15% horse manure compost (50L 10 euros) • Aerator: 25% - 8% lava rock - 4% clay pebbles - 8% perlite (5L bag bought for 5 euros) after properly moistening it. Wear a mask because a lot of dust flies up. % a bit low. There are 100L mixes of perlite/vermiculate that are cheap (15 euros?) in hardware stores sold as insulation materials (for next time!) - 5% vermiculite (3L from the 5L bag bought for 5 euros) after properly moistening it. To mix well: turn and turn with a construction shovel. Pour into the 15L pots then back into the bin, remix and do it again. Put a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom of the pots, then fill 3 pots with the mix. Test with a different composition in one of the 4 pots to see the difference: layer of clay pebbles + 80% seedling soil + 20% peat. May 5, 2020 After a few days spent near a window, and without artificial lighting at night, I realize that the seedlings are stretching excessively, especially the first Quick One in the seedling soil which measures about 10 cm! A little research online: it’s because they are desperately seeking light and it was a bad idea to leave them inside, without direct sunlight. Without delay, I take them out during the day and set up a CFL light for the night! May 7, 2020 Morning: I take the pots out onto the terrace. Beautiful day, lots of sun, a bit of wind. Afternoon: I find all 4 lying down and the soil is completely dry. There must have been a gust of wind and they are not protected. I don’t touch them, and just rehydrating the soil makes them stand up in a few minutes! The Quick One in the seedling pot is the most stretched and doesn’t stand up (lying at 90 degrees), very gently I make it rest on a small wooden cube so it’s not completely lying down but at 45 degrees.

coccinelle They spend about 10 hours outside when it's sunny. The rest of the time, they are under low-power LED and CFL lights. 1 lamp per seedling. I'm using a car sunshade as a side reflector. When it rains or there's a lot of wind, they stay inside sheltered and under artificial light. I mulched the pots with 5cm of olive mulch. I need to get some real gear for artificial lighting. I'm opting for a 250W HPS: ballast + bulb + reflector equipped with an E27 socket. I just need to find that second-hand and not too far away. May 13, 2020 [C+9] The pots are in shape and the leaves have grown well. Although they have some yellow spots... weird. They've been inside for 48 hours due to bad weather. Light 24/7. Tonight, I'm going to let them rest for 5-6 hours in the dark, and tomorrow I'll put them outside to get some air and sunlight. In the end, I'm removing the mulch because 1) the olive mulch might be acidic and alters the soil pH 2) since it was freshly ground, it might be consuming the nitrogen in the soil 3) the moisture isn't evaporating much anymore, and it needs to dry out a bit, and I also want to start feeding them gently at the next watering. Purchased bio-grow 500ml and bio-bloom 500ml for upcoming use (week 3). May 17, 2020 [C+13] end of week 2. They've changed a lot in the last 48 hours. Impressive!

coccinelle May 19, 2020 [C+15] start of week 3 I waited for the soil to be really dry before watering. Maybe too long, but the soil still seemed slightly moist at 1 finger's depth. Started fertilizing with 1L per pot dosed at 1.5ML of BioGrow using a serum phy pod (first fertilization). I realize that despite the stem thickening nicely and the leaves well developed, they are still quite fragile seedlings and they fall over super easily, just from watering! Did I wait too long? Very curious to know what the roots look like now... (but I’ll never know!) I continue to put them outside during the day (unless the weather is bad) and under LED or CFL lighting (very low power) at night. May 23, 2020 [C+19] week 3 Watering is more regular, every 2 days with fertilizing once every other time. They are well developed and the trunks are thicker. I bring the pots inside for the night and finally I set them up to stay in the dark for 4/6 hours because maybe they miss the darkness?

coccinelle Since May 30, the pots have been under a 600W HPS (60cm from the apex). Installed a small fan on speed 1. The room temperature is rising, it's starting to get tight. There are small insects (tiny flying black ants, mini black ants, aphids under the leaves, maybe even thrips, and a few others). Preparing a solution: 1L water + small spoon of Briochin black soap flakes + 4ML of neem oil => intense spraying (every 2 days) be careful not to spray the buds as they are just starting to enter the flowering phase => washing each leaf one by one front and back with a damp cloth! (will need to be redone at least once a week)

coccinelle June 4, 2020 [C+31] week 5 BEGINNING OF FLOWER: [F+1] start of FlowerWeek FlowerWeek1 For several weeks, I've been taking the pots out in the morning and bringing them back in at night: artificial light until midnight, then a break until 6:00 AM, then artificial light until they go back outside. Problem: a lot of very cloudy weather and even some rain regularly => the pots spend a few days completely indoors (which must have created favorable conditions for insects because the humidity and heat are high). The start of FLOW coincides +/- with the beginning-mid week 5 => let's say Wednesday, June 3. To give me an idea, here's a first harvest planning: Pot #1 and #2 (QuickOne: Flowering time 5-6 weeks): week 9-10 => starting July 1. Pot #3 (Royal AK Auto: Flowering time 5-7 weeks) week 9-11 => starting July 1. Pot #4 (Royal Dwarf: Flowering time 6-7 weeks) week 10-11 => starting July 8. coccinelle June 25, 2020 [C+52] week 8 [F+22] start of FloSem4 A few zoomed-in photos of the buds, just for fun :) June 30, 2020 [C+57] start of week 9 [F+27] end of FloSem4 The 2 Quick One have 39% translucent trichomes, 59% milky, and there are 2% that have turned amber on the apex leaves. Yesterday was their last feeding, today watering with water, tomorrow I start the flushing! The Royal AK and Royal Dwarf don't seem as advanced, but it shouldn't take long according to the flowering times given by RQS. In the macro photo, you can still see that the Royal AK (#3) has some amber trichomes even though there were still translucent ones during the visual check. This is in line with the RQS flowering times. I will start the flushing 1 day after the Quick One. The Royal Dwarf (#4) has no amber trichomes, and many translucent ones. Flushing at the same time as the Royal AK Auto, just to see the difference and what happens when you flush more or less late (well, I admit it's also easier to do their flushing at the same time and not get too scattered and confused in my schedule ;) ) End of height measurements since the stretch is over and they are no longer growing. coccinelle July 1, 2020 [C58] start of week 9 [F+28] start of FloSem5 #1 and #2: 1st flush. In the garden: I filled the pot to the brim 7-8 times, then waited for the soil to be uncovered again. In the end, the water was still a bit colored. I’ll do it again in a couple of days, after the soil has dried well. July 2, 2020 [C+59] week 9 [F+29] start of FloSem5 #3 and #4: 1st flush. Same method as the day before. July 5, 2020 [C+62] end of week 9 [F+32] FloSem5 Pots #1 #2 #3 #4: 2nd and final flush in the evening (because it wasn’t possible during the day) The temperature has risen well. We were at 26-28 and now it’s rising to 29. It’s been about 10 days since I reinforced the ventilation with a 3rd fan. Planning for the end: • Last defoliation tomorrow evening: the bottom (large & small fan leaves) + a few from the top (the less pretty ones and/or those hiding buds) • Last watering in 3 days: Wed 8 morning • Last lighting in 4 days: Thursday 9 at 9 PM • 24 hours of total darkness: from Thursday 9 at 9 PM to Friday 10 at 9 PM • Harvest: Friday 10 at 9 PM July 6, 2020 [C+63] end of week 9 [F+33] FloSem5 Here we go for the defoliation! When I see the result, I realize I went harder than expected. When you’re right in it, you don’t really see what you’re removing. Next time I’ll take a step back from time to time. In the end, it might not be so bad and anyway the harvest is very soon. They’ll survive the remaining 4 days! Several leaves were affected, probably by powdery mildew. All the more reason to defoliate and harvest soon. I hope this disease doesn’t reach the flowers, and if it does, that it won’t have time to spread too much! July 8, 2020 [C+65] start of week 10 [F+35] end of FloSem5 In the last few days, the temp has risen to 30-31 degrees! A bit more defoliation in the evening. There’s not much left, especially on the lower half. I’ve just left a few fan leaves, mostly towards the top. Status on senescence: - QuickOne: Well pronounced (especially the one in the potting soil) - Royal AK Auto: barely visible - Royal Dwarf: not sure if it has started I think the Royal AK Auto and the Royal Dwarf deserve a few more days, but unfortunately, I have a personal constraint and I need to harvest before the weekend. In the end, it’s probably not so bad because it will allow for a harvest with different stages of maturity, and I’ll see which plant gives the best result.

coccinelle July 9, 2020 [C+66] start of week 10 [F+36] start of FloSem6 I was planning to stop watering 2-3 days before the harvest to have a product that isn't too green/wet. But in the end, the soil is quite dry this morning, so I'm watering a bit (0.5L per pot) because I don't want to mess things up so close to the finish line. 10 PM: Last defoliation, I'm removing almost all the nutrient leaves as well as the big resinous ones (which I'm setting aside, they might come in handy). The plants will stay in the dark for the next 24 hours. Then... harvest! July 10, 2020 [C+67] start of week 10 [F+37] start of FloSem6 10 PM: Harvest! It took 3 hours, about 45 minutes per plant on average. I'm setting aside the small resinous leaves as well as a few tiny buds. They should be useful for something! I'm letting them dry with the rest. Results (with stems) #1 80g #2 140g #3 100g #4 110g For 3 days, I left a fan running in front to help with drying, especially since the ambient humidity is high (70-75%). #1: 80g (with stems) #2: 140g (with stems) #3: 100g (with stems) #4: 110g (with stems) I'm surprised to find that the trunks are hollow.
