Afghani has been in the the soil for about 4 weeks now. It's in a plastic pot that I keep outside but move in at night to avoid the cold. I'm worried about the yellow tips on the first set of leaves. I noticed it first about a week ago, and its gotten worse since. Rest of the seedling seems to look pretty healthy (but, this is my first time growing, so maybe y'all see something i don't). No nutrients yet, but tap water here is very hard, so I've been adding citric acid to get the pH down to <7 (just using pH strips, so not very precise). It's also been really hot and dry out for the last week, so i've been giving it a little more water throughout the day. Could the yellow tips be from heat stress? would giving smaller doses of water throughout the day help?

Been seeing yellow tips on the first set of leaves of my seedling (in week 4). Not feeding any nutrients yet, but have had to lower pH of water with citric acid. I've been putting it outside during the day and it's been very hot lately. Could it be heat stress?

There is something wrong there, it looks like a 5 day seedling should and 28°C is not that hot for the plant. My guess, you soil is very poor, is it commercial soil or did you use whatever was in you back yard?

When temperatures get too high, a number of warning signs will emerge. Leaves may show yellow or brown spotting, or they may actually appear burnt in places. Leaves may curl up or down or fold inward. When plants experience excessive heat for a long time, new growth patterns emerge. Another thing that can cause this is hot soil. Which means the nutrients in the soil are too strong for your seedling. Hopefully I answered your question and remember Happy Growing and Free your mind one puff at a time.

That's a really tiny plant for 4 weeks, my first guess is that your pH is out of range. The yellow cotyledons and slow growth kind of indicate to me that it's not getting the nutrients it needs to grow, and if it can't uptake from the soil because of pH, it'll start pulling nutrients from the lower leaves first. Heat could also be a factor, but I'd start by verifying your water is about 6.5 pH every time you water. Overwatering can also cause this since it robs the roots of oxygen. Good luck with your grow!

@@Athos, the top few inches of soil seem pretty light, but deeper down the consistency gets somewhat clumpier. If it is a soil problem, would transplanting into some better soil be too traumatic for a teenie weenie little seedling that is already a little sickly?

@gooberz, a poor soil will compact itself, constricting the roots and leaving very little space for air. This has norhing to do with nutrients. Try picking some soil in your hand, is it fluffy or hard and crumbles?

@@Athos, I'm using Black Gold Potting Soil. I have an Anesthesia Auto that I planted in the same stuff about a week later which is also growing a little slowly, but not as bad as this Afghani. They are almost the same size as each other now. If my soil is bad, would adding nutrients help or should I be thinking about putting my plants in some better dirt?
