The Bakery Seed Co. - Creme Brulee
This one was a random freebie seed from a past order. I've never grown anything from bakery Seed Co. before so that'll be interesting! I know literally nothing about this strain at all... Here's the official blurb:
"With a Bloom time of 63 to 70 days from seed you can expect a yield of 0.8lbs/m2. This special cross holds a very euphoric effect and even better taste. The sweet signature smell from the Bakery can found late in bloom and can be very appetising to the senses. This genetic falls towards the indica dominant and has great bushy structure to match."
It sounds quite nice, but then the official blurb would, wouldn't it? Like I say, no idea on the strain, nor the breeder, so we're going in fully blind.
>> EQUIPMENT <<
I keep things pretty Lo-Fi:
3 Gallon Felt pot
Bio-Bizz Light Mix
Bio-Bizz Grow
Bio-Bizz Bloom
Bio-Bizz Alg-A-Mic
Fecida CR600 125w LED
I grow in the Space Cupboard, a broom cupboard in my kitchen with the walls wrapped in survival blankets. It's small, but it's stealthy and convenient.
>> GERMINATION TIMELINE <<
22/12 - Germinated 1 seed in between cotton pads soaked in a little water and closed up in a jiffy, then placed between two plates and put on the floor of my grow space to keep them warm.
23/12 - No tap root cracked yet, but I put the seed in the ground anyhow. I always learnt to not soak seeds for more than 24 hours, I don't know if that's true equally for weed too, but I just follow what I've always done with my veg.
24/12 - Misted gently a couple times a day just to keep the surface of the soil slightly damp and they popped this evening. I'll keep the humidity dome on until the first set of serrated leaves pop and then remove it. It's more for my benefit than the seedling, because my soil tends to dry out fast and I don't want to mist it 5 times a day.
Welcome back to the first week for Creme Brulee, the week where nothing happens!
Day 5 - Height: 2"
Week 1 of Veg, this little girl started a bit slower than my previous seeds, but seems to be picking up now and is normalising. I think mostly that was down to the cooler weather at night at the moment, it was down to 1C outside tonight and though my house is obviously warmer than that, it has been a bit colder. Still, looking back through my diaries she doesn't seem too far behind now and once she has another node or so I reckon she'll be on track.
I haven't done much in the way of care yet. Took off the humidity dome once the serrated leaves came out. Continued to mist for a couple days and once the soil was becoming completely dried out and the first node popped, I started to water with the can, but only about 30ml of water or so, just in a 1-2 inch radius around the shoot. No nutes or supplements yet.
Thanks for coming back, Creme Brulee is moving into week 2 and hopefully some nice growth incoming!
Day 9 - @ 3.5"
This girl has bounced back after a bit of a slow start. I think she's pretty much back to a normal timeline now, getting her second and third nodes out. Looking forward to seeing her crack on as she moves into the second week and put on a healthy growth spurt! No nutes, supplements or special care yet, just watering with a little sprinkling of water when the soil dries out, usually every 1-1.5 days.
Day 12 - @ 6"
Here we go! She's hitting her stride and growing well now. Starting next feed I'll begin with very low doses of grow nutes and ALg-A-Mic, keeping it down to 1ml/L and see how she responds.
Stay well x
Welcome back to week 3 of the Creme Brulee grow, she'll take off this week I expect and we're well out of the danger period, so looking forward to some nice veg stretch!
Day 15 @ 8.5"
She's growing well and should start stretching up over the next couple of weeks. She's turning into a really nice expression of an Indica, with those short stubby leaves. I started feeding Alg-A-Mic and Grow nutes yesterday, but only 1ml/L for now, I still feel like ramping up slowly is the best course to take and watch how they respond. I also got an infrared thermometer this week which has allowed me to measure Leaf Surface Temperature(LST), it's been amazingly useful to dial in the height of the LED once they stretch up more. I measured the LST at 23C which is only 1C below the heat of the leaves on the canopy on the Lemon Pies behind her, which are fully in bloom, but that's fine as both temps are well within stress limits. That's given me real peace of mind.
Day 20 @ 17.5"
Had some good, explosive growth this week and she's looking like developing her first pre-flowers. Seems to have responded okay to the introduction of nutrients, but the tips of the leaves have bent at some weird angles, some pointing straight upwards, so I'm going to have to tread a little lightly I think with this girl and her feeding. Otherwise all healthy!
Thanks for reading, grow well! x
Welcome back all, getting very close to flower about now.. but also the start of a few troubles. DUN DUN DUNNNNNN!
Day 23 - Height: @ 22"
This plant is a little sensitive, she's growing well now, but seems sensitive to nutrients and water even. Every time I water her she curls up a little for a few hours, almost as if she's overwatered. I took the Day 23 photos just after watering and you can see her curling a little there. She's healthy though, so I'm sure it's no problem, just something to be aware of as I go through the grow I guess. I only upped nutrients by .5ml/l this week due to this, so she's at 1.5ml/l Bio-Bizz Grow now.
Day 27 - Height: @ 27"
This plant continues to be a bit fragile, the lowest set of leaves seems to be showing something that looks like a possible Magnesium deficiency? It's looking nice and healthy aside from this and growth is good, but I don't have a lot of faith for this plant in general at this point, it just seems to be a bit flakey. Regardless, I'll take it through to the end, see how it progresses and fingers crossed for a half-decent smoke at the end. She's started producing her bud sites now and has small pre-flowers. I bumped nutrients to 2ml/l tonight and I'll start an initial low dosage of bloom nutrients from next week. Nothing else but a little leaf tucking to keep some of the fan leaves out the way of the bud sites exposure to the light.
Thanks for reading, grow well!
Welcome back, new week, new status, the creme brulee is into the flower phase!
Day 28 - Height: @ 31"
This plant continues to be a little fiddly. There are times where she looks stunning and really healthy and others where she sags and looks really tired. I wonder if she perhaps just hits her DLI early and that's got something to do with it. In general she looks good though, nice and strong growth, attractive and solid green colour. Flowers have cropped up now, so she's into bloom and I've started introducing BioBizz Bloom nutrients from this week at a low dose of 1ml/l.
Day 32 - Height: @ 36"
Plant is looking mostly healthy still. Nothing to report at all really, just coasting along, feeding and drinking well and seems to be accepting nutrients just fine with no burn, and/or deficiencies progressing. One thing I have noticed is that although her canopy is quite close to the light, she is showing no signs of heat or light stress, which I've had problems with before, so it seems she can take it pretty well. She looks good!
Thank you for reading as always, stay healthy! x
Welcome back to week two of flower for the triffid, sorry... CREME BRULEE grow. This girl is becoming a real giant...
Day 35 - Height @ 40"
I defoliated the lower leaves and also pruned off two of the lower side branches that weren't growing very high and wouldn't amount to anything in terms of flower. She does seem to have some deficiencies, possibly it looks a little to me like a touch of Phosphorus deficiency based on a few rust-like spots here and there and purple leaf stems, but that's no problem. I've upped the bloom nutrients to 3ml/l a little faster than I would normally in response. She still has extreme swings with her sagging, in the mornings she looks really good, nice and healthy with her leaves pointing upwards but by evening she begins drooping. I'm past worrying about it at this point though, it doesn't seem to be an issue, rather just her natural cycle. I do hope she stops growing vertically soon though....
Day 40 - Height: @ 44"
This plant continues to be a pain in my arse. I suppose it's a challenge though, so it does keep things fun, but at this point I'm wondering if she'll even make it to harvest. I'm fairly sure she has a Phosphorus Deficiency, so I've jacked up the bloom nutrients in an attempt to combat that, but she wilts at a moments notice if the watering is even a few hours later than she would like, as you can see in the photos. She does bounce back quite fast and her structure is really nice, but very temperamental! I guess for now I'll keep doing what I'm doing and continue to monitor her, hopefully she'll start picking up, otherwise it'll be back to the drawing board on a diagnosis 🙏 I'm not convinced it's not a calcium deficiency, though that would be really weird, but I might give her a little try with a calmag foliar spray and just see how she reacts to that too. It's all an experiment at this point.
Thanks for reading!
Welcome back to week 3 of flower! The Creme Brulee is starting to really turn South at this point, so it's been and will continue to be a bit of a chore working out her issues I think.
Day 42 - Height: @ 46"
This plant continues to be a bit of a challenge. Trying to treat the deficiency I flushed out the pot using plain water and then made up a foliar feed with CalMag.
Cal/Mag Foliar Feed = 1ml/l Vitalink CalMag mixed up and put into spray bottle, then sprayed directed upwards so that the mist falls with the majority onto the underside of the leaves.
After this I just pruned off a lot of the really dead leaves and left her to it. She does appear to have responded quite well, I'll need to keep a close eye on her over the next week or so, but she should be good. If she responds alright, I'll re-introduce nutrients on her next feed at half strength and we'll go from there. Old growth isn't going to repair, but she should stop looking worse and new growth should look good, fingers crossed!
Day 46 - Height: 46"
Okay, so we might finally be there with this fragile lady. She still looks a little worse for wear, but seems to be recovering. I've trimmed off a lot of the necrotic leaves now and hit her with fresh nutrients in what should be a relatively clean soil after the flush and cal/mag treatment. Her buds are starting to fatten, so despite all the difficulties she seems ot be trucking on as best she could. Really at this point I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping she recovers well enough to make it through to harvest. If she nosedives again after all this, I may just toss her out and cut my losses, because I don't have the space for sick trees. One things for sure, I won't be growing anything from Bakery Seeds Co. again! 😆
Thanks for reading, stay healthy, grow well! x
New week begins! Day 49 so I have started to bring down the grow nutrients, ready to phase them out as she gets nearer harvest time. She still looks pretty rough after the ordeal she's been through in the last week and a half, but she is definitely starting to show improvement or, at the very least, she's not getting any worse! I think if I can get through another week, week and a half, she'll be heading towards flush and fade time anyway, so basically this week is one last big push towards the finish line.
Day 49 - Height: 46"
I gave a second, low dose of cal/mag @1ml/l, mixed in with the other nutrients and fed through the roots, but will probably put it to one side now, as there is already plenty of calcium in my water and I don't want to cause any new problems. On the plus side, her buds are starting to put on weight and I even spied a few orange pistils this morning, so all good signs. She's also putting out a bit of a stink now too and I have to admit, as much as she's a pain in my arse, she smells GREAT!
Welcome back to my Creme Brulee grow! We've made it into week 9, which is great considering the problems she had, but we're almost there!
Day 56: Height 46"
So after some pretty full on soil testing last week where I discovered her PPMs in the runoff were pretty high, I've decided that the deficiencies she has been showing were down to overfeeding and causing nutrient lockout. I'm fairly sure she was suffering from a Potassium deficiency, as well as Phosphorous and possibly Calcium too. Sadly I only invested in a pen to read PPM in my runoff during these problems, so was slow to realise this, but hey, we learn for the future right? In response, I lowered all nutrients slightly and gave her a couple of small, once a week calmag doses and she seems to have actually bounced back okay. Lets be real, she isn't going to win any beauty contests, she's the ugliest son of a bitch I have ever grown, but she's still packing on weight and judging by the trichomes and pistils, she still has two weeks left in her. Her main stem is a good size right now already and even her side stems looking decent, so I think for all the troubles she had, she's going to pay back the effort to fix her.
I'm still feeding calmag at a dose of 1ml/l but only once per week. She gets watered maybe twice a week, so more or less I'm alternating the nutrients right now. I'll begin to dial back all nutrients this week anyway, in prep for a short flush before the big chop.
Very hungry plant, I found it quite troublesome to grow and it went pretty south about 2 weeks into flower. Still wound up yielding OK and the bud was good, with a lovely cream scent. Don't think I'd bother growing again, however. I would recommend training 100% as she grows really tall.
Welcome back for the big finale of the Creme Brulee grow! This plant came down on 63 days from sprout exactly. She could have gone a little longer but was showing amber trichomes and with the state of her, I just wanted to get her down.
>> HARVEST AND TRIM <<
I only trim the largest leaves initially and give each bud a superficial quick trim, leaving all the bud on the stems and then put them into a dry rack for about 7 days at 50% Relative Humidity and 20-22C room temps. After that, I snip from the stems and give them a proper trim, getting them ready for jars. For my drying situation, I find trimming 50% wet and 50% dry like this allows me to stretch out the dry time to a full 7 days and control everything a little easier.
I tend to put them into the jars when they are still a tiny bit damp, you can't feel it in the buds, but you know it's there, but likewise it's not too crispy. I then leave the lids off completely for a further 2-3 days. This just draws out that final stage before the cure and allows me to get them nice and dry without ever going too far, too fast.
>> DRY BUD REPORT <<
I trimmed the buds of the stems after 6 days ready for jarring up. They're definitely not the densest buds, but the smell is actually really nice, sort of a mix between a cream, caramel and slightly spiced nutty vibe. Quite a strong and very sweet, smooth scent.
>> EARLY SMOKE <<
Obviously needs a good cure behind her but the early smoke is very relaxed. I vaped it and the taste was good with a very warm, uplifting high. I didn't smoke enough to really get any strong effect, but just a little test and it seems to do the job. I think it will be on the lighter side, more of a creative, chatty buzz than a heavy hitting couchlocker, but with a nice muscle relaxant side.
>> FINAL THOUGHTS <<
Overall this plant was a bit tricky to grow but I learnt a lot, especially with tracking PPMs in the soil. The plant was ugly as all hell at the end of it all and the yield pretty bang average, even disappointing when you consider the size of her, but hey, you gotta be honest, show the good with the bad and keep learning right? I don't think I'd bother growing it again, but if I did, I'm sure that if I did some training and fed it properly after everything I learnt here, I could pull a good yield. If I ever did grow it again I absolutely would train her fairly heavily and would recommend that route to anyone looking to grow this out in future.
Onwards and upwards, plenty to grow coming up and lots of exciting strains ready to be popped, so we keep going!
@MrHightimes, Cheers man! I've not got any experience with this strain at all, so I'm quite looking forward to seeing how she goes. The random freebies are sometimes the most fun!
@OneDropOfTHC, Thanks a lot man! Absolutely, I try and look at every grow as a learning experience right now, so the easiest ones are not always the best from that perspective!
