You can defoliate an auto, but be careful, dont take too much, and yes do it over a period of time, you shoud be fine. But there is always a risk, worked great with my last 2 grows thoug. Best of luck and happy growing 🙂🙏

I do not defoliate auto's without a good reason. I'll take off lower leaves so I have enough room to water and dying leaves after they are good and yellow. Other than that I let the lady keep all her solar panels.

I don't think FIM/topping or defoliation is a good idea on autos. Every branch can normally be bent in at least two directions, and by choosing one of them you can get light onto more parts of the plant. (It will also result in bigger side colas but you probably know that)

I have been told many times over not to defoliate an auto due to the short veg period. You're best off doing LST to get light into the flowering sites. Leaves being the sugar power source during flower are needed, and autos enter flower early, so you would be taking away a source of growth. Bending leaves out of the way is your best path forward (or LST) and trying to bend the plant too hard (HST) could stress the plant (same goes for topping and FIMing) and cause it to herm or stunt it's growth. Just try and bend them out of the way with some gardening wire. Happy growing and happy harvest!
