When do you start counting 'day 1'?

My methodology of germinating is soaking the seed for 18-24 hours, (skipped paper towel this time) and putting the seed into the substrate. I start counting day 1 from this moment. My plants seem small comparatively to others at the same stage. When do you start counting day 1?

I germinate in the soil, so I wait until the seed has broken through the soil and is visible.

I count day one when it pops out of the soil as germination can take a long time for some seeds. This is why they have now added a germination week into diaries then week one. Good Luck!

I think you’ll find most ppl count from breaking medium or opening up and showing first set of leaves
