while it is possible and normal to grow in compost and good top soil it is the norm to use peat moss regardless of what the environmentalists are saying about it as in it isn't right but they keep doing it and its normal to use it as an option for work. I could advise using coco and hydroponic nutrients but if you want to grow organically then it is normal to use peat moss. You can purchase Gaia Green products and amend with those instead of purchasing the dry fertilizers separately. Someone would need to give a recipe or you can look one up or ask for one.

Go to the "Mandala Seeds" website and click on their "grow guides" section, this will give you lots of useful advice.

pure compost is to much needs to be cut with soil or soilless medium. If you want to keep it simple try just perlite and coir or peat moss and feed it with a complete nutrient lineup with all the macros and micros. something like Jacks, Metrop or even teraaquata.
