I find anytime have gnats a topping of Nematodes works best for me. They live in the soil and eat the larva then the adults die for getting caught in fans or flying into the light. I use a brand called Nemaglobe pod poppers DE or diatomaceous earth is a good option but it can be a respiratory irritant if mishandled. Plus when it gets wet it is said to be ineffective. So best to always use it dry. It does not kill on contact from my understating of it. but it does cut the bugs exoskeltion "skin" and makes they "bleed out" or evaporate all their internal liquids and then die. Its akin to walking or rolling on glass and the wounds not healing. You will loose a lot of blood and pass-out with enough cuts. BTi is also another good option for controlling them. Good Luck!

It takes a pretty bad infestation to actually affect your plants. The flies are harmless but the larvae can damage roots in large numbers. The best defense against them is not promoting an environment they like. Don't keep the top of your soil wet all the time. Maybe try bottom feeding until you get them under control. You can top dress your soil with diatomaceous earth . It's food grade and kills both gnats and larvae on contract.

Gnats occur when the soil is constantly too wet. Letting your soil dry out more between irrigations would help. Hydrogen peroxide may help, as would Aza Max/Neem oil.
