yup, wrong pH will probably kill your plant faster than wrong EC :) Get the cheap ones with good reviews before you can get an expensive pen. It's kinda crucial. I started with pH paper strips, realized they were not very accurate, got pH drops - they served me well for a couple of month, until I got cheap not-branded ph and ec pens that serve me to this day. I also can't afford a bluelab ph pen that costs like a light :)

You should get both. There are also ones that can do EC and PH in one.
-no PH control: your plant could be in a bad spot to get their nutrients.
-no EC control: unsure how much nutes are left in the medium and how much added to your water
I would argue that they are both a good addition to finding out what happened to your plant and how to prevent damage.
Especially if you are starting out.
