I noticed a brown spot on the stem today. The shoot that's growing from it is very loose and sticking out; is that a fungal infection? What can be done about it?

Looks like mold. I would cut off the shoot and scrape away the infestation as best as possible. From my experience in organic vegetable cultivation, I know that such spots are then generously smeared with a "slurry" of water and rock dust. I don't know if rock dust specifically has a fungicidal effect, but it also seals the spot.

Hello. I use sulphur on all my cuts and mold. Its a very good healer and antifungal too. Yes, as the others said, scrape away the mold and soft spot and apply sulphur to the area. I don't like to use tape on the plant bark. I find it tends to pull off more plant bark when you pull it off. Put some sulphur on a cotton ball and wrap that around the plant and tape the cotton only not the plant bark. Pull it tight and the sulphur will take care of the mold. You can find agricultural sulphur (cheepest) in any garden center. and medical grade sulphur at any pharmacy. Chuck.

When you get a crack on a branch to your mainline, this can open up an area for a fungal infection, which it looks like you have. I cut off the branch and scrape away. Any sign of fungus has the other dimension. But I would also covered up with tape to prevent any spread. I highly suggest you do this cause you can lose the whole plant.

Hello JeyJo, I did have the same a while ago. I thought that it was like a fungal but I did pull the stem off and used a knive to scrape the soft part away till it was clean. After that I did use tape to protect it against stuff from outside. The scar healed and there was no problem after that! Happy Growing Buddy! 💚

Looks like your mainstem broke in the middle, try to check if the rim you can see next to the black coloring goes deep. you can fixate it with cableties to keep it together. Looks necrotic, but whats weird is the coloring. Nekrotic would be more brown i guess. Check if its dry and make sure its not something that lives, some kind of bacteria. Then fixating should be enough for now
