trial and error and a little hope for consistency in whatever batch of soil you buy with a nutrient charge in it.
can wait to see deficiency symptoms sstart and then pre-empt that timing 'next' cycle. this is probably the best to do when learning instead of guessing when to add more. it won't set you back much to see a mnimal amount of paling at bottom of the plant etc... before reacting. Then you know you need to slowly ramp up fertilization fromt hat point... more trial and error.
eventually you'll have a well-planned out strategy that avoids any ugly leaves or unhealthy plants.
