at some point they will rot, but that takes ~14 days. That absolutely won't happen the first week. Plant the seeds and forget. it is out of your control at that point.
Some things are in our control, some are not.
you can affect sprout times with how deeply you bury a seed and how hard you tamp down. You can add a day or more by buring too deeply. If you bury too shallow, the shell might remain firmly attached and that is also not optimal. If systematic about it, you can get familiar with an optimal depth that doesn't impede sprout times too much and ensures the shell is removed by the time it does sprout.
Older seeds can sometimes take longer. Maybe a chunk of perlite in the way delays it half a day, lol.
if you live in a cold area or the season is cold, a heat mat with a thermostat can help make sprouting times more consistent. I don't even bother soaking the seeds anymore. Since using a heat mat at 76F, vast majority of my seeds sprout within 2.5-3.5 days. Seen some pop out in 2 days. this year i had one straggler take 6 days - it was upside down in the substrate which caused the delay. the taproot was stuck at the top of the soil, dried out and died, but it definitely germinated, lol, and long before that point. Shit happens.
Before the heat mat, i'd see 4-5-6 days till sprout more regularly. Now, it's rare.
use a dome while they are underground. This will ensure you won't have to re-irrigate that first 5-7 days. remove it when they sprout, of course.
