Just to provide a counterpoint to Organoman - the very purpose of trichomes and the contents is to protect the flowers, firstly from radiation. From this understanding, more photons impacting the flowers would presumably provide an impetus for increased trichome coverage. Energy requirements and the capacity to make energy being outside and irrelevant to that mechanism. The process of having photons interact with trichomes, the subsequent damage, and the recurring cycle of repair being (IMO) material to fat, dripping trichomes.
From a heuristics point of view, you are indoors and will only be truly dialed in for a very specific plane with your light fixtures. Make this plane be your canopy and forget about everything else. underlighting is generally flawed in theory and application, the canopy is where it all counts indoors. outdoors the sun does it all for you, add dirt and done.
I always defoliate heavily around this time, but I stretch into flower as part of SOPs... so I am moreso correcting my canopy at this time. It is just like any other training activity... trade stress on the plant for steering it with intent now. For me, that means I take a small L 3 weeks in such that there are zero larfy buds or wasted energy making larfy buds for another second. Honestly, I'd do it earlier if i could without hormone shenanigans going wild...
