They like to hide on the underside and make eggs and feed, once they are bigger they can make webs to get around easier. If its in veg. nuke the fuckers with some sort of pesticide. ones containing Permethrin are great for mites.
Thrips tend to be in the soil and then on top of the leaves not their undersides in my experence.
Any leaves removed should be bagged and binned immediately or they could spread to other plants/gardens. Don't compost em. Burning them also works to kill the little shits.
Their are other options then Permethrin, like predatory mites but they can be hard to find. Check out your local grow shops for some.
