What's your opinion on under-canopy supplemental lights? Have you ever used it on the same strain (optimally on a clone that you have direct experience growing without the undercanopy light)?

Hey buddy how are you my friend, this is great question 💚 🌿 Under-Canopy Supplemental Lighting, my Honest Take and remember just my humble opinion based on my experience with them 💚 Short answer: yes, it works, when used correctly and with intention. Long answer: it’s a tool, not a miracle, and it rewards growers who already understand structure, airflow, and plant balance. ⸻ 🔬 Have I used it on the same genetics? Yes, including the same strain and clones, grown with and without under-canopy lighting. That’s the only way to judge it honestly. What changes isn’t the plant’s genetics, it’s how much of the plant gets to fully express them. ⸻ 🌞 What actually changes (in real life, not marketing) 1️⃣ Top-to-bottom finish becomes more even This is the first thing you notice. • Lower and inner buds don’t lag behind • Harvest windows tighten • You don’t feel like you’re cutting tops “ready” while bottoms are “almost” This alone is huge for quality consistency. ⸻ 2️⃣ “C buds” stop being waste What used to be: • popcorn • lollipop cuts • airy lowers Becomes: • solid B buds • and often A-grade buds, depending on structure You don’t magically get colas everywhere, but the entire plant improves. ⸻ 3️⃣ Yield increases, but not double Let’s be clear and honest here: • ❌ It does not double yields • ✅ It does increase usable flower weight Why? Because you’re no longer throwing away or downgrading the lower third of the plant. Think efficiency, not miracles. ⸻ 4️⃣ The grow can feel “shorter” Not always in calendar days, but in decision stress. • Fewer “wait or chop?” moments • Less staggered ripening • More confidence in harvest timing That mental load matters. ⸻ 🌬️ The part people don’t talk about (but should) ⚠️ Heat & airflow become non-negotiable Under-canopy lighting adds energy where air is usually weakest. If someone adds lights but ignores: • under-canopy airflow • humidity pockets • leaf stacking They can create problems, not solve them. This setup rewards growers who: • already manage airflow well • understand plant spacing • respect VPD and humidity zones ⸻ 🧠 What it does not do Let’s be honest for newer growers reading this: • It won’t fix poor genetics • It won’t fix bad nutrition • It won’t replace training or structure • It won’t save an overcrowded room You still have to do the work. ⸻ 🔦 Best results come when lights work together Under-canopy shines (literally) when combined with: • over-canopy lighting • inner-canopy or side lighting • thoughtful training instead of aggressive lollipopping That’s when the plant stops being “top-heavy” and starts acting like a whole system. ⸻ 👀 Real-time proof, not just words If you want to see this as it’s happening, not after-the-fact photos, you’re welcome to follow our current run where we’re using: • under-canopy lights • inner-canopy lights • over-canopy lights Same genetics, same environment philosophy, just better light distribution. No secrets, no hype, just observation. ⸻ 🌱 Final thought Under-canopy lighting doesn’t change what the plant is. It changes how much of the plant gets a chance to matter. Used humbly, patiently, and with respect, it’s one of the most underrated tools in indoor growing. Growers love, always

I haven't tried under canopy but I have tried to use side lighting. My tent is already pretty much maxed out on the amount of wattage, so when I added side lighting, I actually experienced issues more so than benefits. If I didn't have a powerful light, the side lighting could be beneficial

The lil extra gain doesn’t worth the money spent in the electricity bill… 😎

It does improve the quality and size of inflorescences on the lower sides of the plants. The general guideline is to have side lighting at 1/3 of the main light. If its a possibility for you, go for it!
