Topping autos works pretty well. Check out Hawkbo's grows. He tops a lot of autos and gets extremely good results with serious bush/canopies.
Top after the 3rd node is the key i reckon. .

I've done it at different stages and didn't have a problem. I didn't consciously do a side by side, but have potted precariously at times with the same strain and some were neglected at some stage but in the end things evened out.
I reckon if you have an aggressive positive growth environment then plants will strive anyways.

You can do it if you have good environment and care through out growth. I never had a problem with it and yields avg over 100 g
