If itā€™s just for rain run off I think your idea of making a roof structure with transparent plastic is probably best. You could build the frame out of wood or PVC. For early frosts i covered my plants in industrial sized plastic garbage bags overnight with stakes helping hold the bags from sticking on the buds too bad. That worked well for me. Good luck :+1:
