My first grow! To keep things as simple as possible, I chose an autoflower variety. Looking forward to seeing where this will go.
Dropped the seed in a glass of water and kept it in a dark place for a couple of days. With the tap root showing, it was put in an 11L pot, which I know is generous but should still suffice.
My tent takes in air from the surroundings which are incredibly cold for this time of year. Heating up the tent is at the moment unfortunately not an option. I have some concerns about the growth of my seedling due to the low temperature and humidity.
The grow is steadily progressing, although slow. Temperatures have thankfully increased a little. The damage showing on the top right leaf in the pictures is bothering me a little. Reading up on different forums, it might be a calcium deficiency. For now I won't take action and let the plant develop a bit more to see what happens.
This week the plant is exploding. It's very satisfying to see it expand this quickly. I started feeding it a small amount of growth nutrients. While it's growing rapidly in horizontal directions, it does seem a bit slow to expand vertically. Whether this is a problem or not I am not sure. I'm considering moving away from a 24 hour light schedule. While I see a lot of promise in topping plants, for my first grow I want to keep things as simple as possible and just get a healthy plant to maturity. New leaves are looking healthy, which makes me optimistic about the damage to the first leaves. Will just let it be for now.
Getting bushy now! I rotate the pot occasionally which can make it difficult to compare exact day by day growth on the pictures. Overall though it is definitely doing well. Increased the dosage for my nutrients a little. I've added a fan to the tent to get some wind going. Not much else to add - steady as she goes.
The damaged leaf looks (in my inexperienced eyes) like a calcium deficiency. Since the top parts of the plant look healthy, I've decided to let it be for now. Ordered a pH meter just in case issues also start showing near the top.
In the top left corner of the pics you can see another grow starting. I won't report on that one but it's a Royal Cookies auto that I will practice training on.
She's getting bushy now to the point where I feel it might become a problem due to air circulation. I bought a stronger fan and a charcoal filter since this thing is getting smelly. I don't mind obviously but the neighbours might!
Ideally I'd like to increase the temperatures to approximately 26C and to reduce air humidity to ~45%, but installing a heater and dehumidifier would be problematic due to the limited space I have available (60cm x 60cm). I tried putting my dehumidifier in the tent for a bit which obviously reduced humidity but also increased temperatures to 31C, which I find too hot. When flowering starts I'll need to find a solution for this. Probably going to attempt to dehumidify the space the tent is in.
The first pistils are showing! Couldn't be happier to transition into this phase with a healthy plant.
At the start of the week, I cut off many leaves that were not getting any light. This has really opened up the plant for more bud sites to catch light and for air to pass through the plant. As a first time grower, cutting off chunks made me a little nervous so I hope it will turn out well. I'm going to monitor growth closely. Opinions on HSTing autoflowers are mixed which I understand, but I felt this thing needed some air.
The first couple of days after defoliation she got really thirsty, drinking twice her normal amount. Could be due to additional evaporation from the pot due to the foliage not being as dense too, I don't know. I started adding bloom nutes while reducing grow nutes a bit. So far no signs of nute burn are showing, apart from last week's minor tip damage which recovered quickly with a dose of just water.
Some late LSTing made the canopy more even. Looking at 12ish stalks at the moment. The even canopy allowed me to move the light a bit closer too.
I still need to sort out the humidity. Attempting some things now but it might be difficult due to the grow space being connected to the outside air.
Excited for next week, I hope to see the first buds!
All is well. Thirsty, healthy, steady growth. I trained it a bit more to form a more even canopy. Cut off a bunch of leaves too that didn't catch any light.
The smell is amazing, like a soft fresh flowery berry kind of smell.
Flowering seems to be going slow. I'm not sure if I should be doing anything at this point other than just keeping her going. Probably all the training didn't help her. I'll leave her be for now since everything seems under control
Another week, small update. I measured the intensity of the light in different places in the tent and found it (surprise surprise) that my cheap LED didn't cover the edges of the plant. I tried to tie everything a bit closer together to make the light reach all branches. The lower parts of branches will now get less light, while the tops get more. I'm trying to reduce this effect by folding leaves under the flowers instead of having them hang over, and by defoliating a little.
