The girls are looking good! Even my runt big bubble is perking up and growing lovely! This week we started super LST until I can get some training wire. Still feeding 1/2 gallon per plant and they seem to be thriving well enough that I'm going to switch the lights to 12/12 by the weekend! The smell of them are crazy already and makes me smile like this๐ Like, Comment, Follow and drop any advice!
Once the root is out of the starter sponge, lower the water level to encourage the root to chase downward. I've been dabbling with Kratky lately and found it does encourage speedier root development... Great start on the seed! Happy Growing!
Nice to see some experimenting going on! ๐
I've also plaid around with the kratky method & found it entertaining yet at the same time I felt I had to be a heisenberg scientist in order to keep the grow going at the same rate as the side by side soil comparison. It was easy to damage the roots and halt development of the plants compared to growing in soil and it was less forgiving compared to DWC when it comes to gas exchange in the root-zone. Not to mention what will happen if you --god forbid have light reaching the water, causing algae bonanza and again -- stunted root growth and crippled plant.
Being on point with pH, while not burning the roots with too much nutrients is key or the plants look like they are in week 2 after a month heh.
Like @GroloCup mentioned -- create an air gap to encourage roots to chase downwards is key. Not enough air in between the plant and the water, and they will be waterlogged, droopy and again -stunted growth. But then again, results wont even be on par with growing in soil.
I tend to prefer to burn 10 extra watt and get those air-stones running. DWC side by side with kratky, DWC has always won for me at least, soil being 2:nd and kratky 3:rd, far behind.
Note: it's also nice to use hybrid soil-kratky method if you have a smaller pot and want to extend the weeks in veg w/o transplanting. Just put the pot on top of the kratky, and let the roots work their way into the kratky vessel under the original pot and make sure there is a decent air gap in between, decent fitting between the two vessels to keep humidity up in the air, but still lose enough to encourage some gas exchange. Then it's just focus on adjusting pH in the water to ~5,6 - 5,8 in the kratky and roughly 6,5 in the soil. But then again, why go kratky when u can turn it into DWC by just adding an air stone? :)
Edit: Your switch of grow-medium was a good choice --If I had a seedling and was out of soil I'd rather grow it in an old cotton-sock and treat it like a coco/perlite grow over growing it in a kratky vessel haha
The crackpot method may work for seedlings in good vpd environment but then it will just rot or stunt.
Coco really is the best non liquid medium. You can use semi organic, synthetic or whatever. I had to adjust by making my feed more acidic (5.5-6), alternate with just RO wate and adding calmag for coco blend especially under leds.
I do let it dry out a bit more towards later cooler flower weeks.
