Week 4, babies getting bigger. The size between the tallest and smallest is now 3cm! My special child still growing strong! They’re now outside, covered at night just in case it gets frosty. I’m waiting until they’re a little bigger before I put them in their final grow space.

Planted my babies in their permanent places. They’re not growing as fast as I expected and only one cm bigger than last week (same the week before). It’s a bit hard to be precise because they’re planted at a 45 deg angle to make their transition to horizontal growing and espaliering gentler on them. I’ve labelled this week as vegetative, however one plant has started producing white stigmas. One other plant looks like it will reveal its gender soon. 4/5 plants are green, one has greenish/purple leaves. Note to self - next grow: measure from the cotyledon leaves! My special child was planted upright, I’m guessing that the leaf deformity is from trauma as a seed, and no one needs to add to that.

Flower initiation: week 1ish. They’re all developing at different rates. I’m using the most developed one for all the measurements. This is my first time growing auto seeds, and it’s a different thing to bag-seeds! Seems I may have some girls and some boys, and that special child who hasn’t grown any extra leaves at all - just the two co-joined serrated ones… The plants aren’t any taller, but one has lovely whit hairs and is developing little tricomes on the leaf surrounding the stigmas! Plenty of rain this week with additional watering at night, and some seasol for extra nutrients. Keeping the females under cloches, to prevent accidental pollination with any males.

I really expected these plants to be bigger than this! Heave grown 1cm from last week. There are 2 girls, 2 boys and a dud…the girls are being kept under a cloche to prevent pollination. I’m not sure I’ll bother with auto seeds again…

Still underwhelmed by these seeds. They all look like they’re different strains. I’ve kept the males despite the risk of pollination (the girls are under cloches to protect from the unusual frost and cold weather, which I hope is enough to protect them from airborne pollen!). They’re not getting taller by much and even though the flowers are there, they’re remaining small. Tricomes are fully happening on and around the flowers, the stems of the tricomes have gone purple on one plant, clear (not ripe yet) on the other. Enjoy the photos - might help beginners with sexing their plants 🤷‍♀️

They’re a little bigger, and my girls have more flowers…my boys have more flowers… The espaliering is going well, and girl #1 has flowers that look like they’re main colas, shame they’re so small. Woefully small plants and yields looking pitiful.

Finally seeing some growth. The extra rain has been great! The boys were tossed this week (pollen kept for a future project), along with the dudseed. Girl #1 has what looks like 7 main colas the biggest one has now sprouted to 4cm. Girl #1 has distinctly dark purple colouring right through the flowers. Girl #2 has 3, possibly 4 main colas forming, and is completely green…still looking like different strains.

My girls have only grown 1cm in length, but the extra colas are growing strong! They average 5cm each. Maybe the plants need to be taller before espaliering next time? There are a lot of extra colas, 15 on girl #1, and 10 on girl #2! They still look like different strains, girl #1 has very dark purple flowers, but #2 has greener flowers with slight pink tones.

The overall length hasn’t changed more than 2 cm for both plants. However the new colas have shot up like weeds - haha. The tallest on girl #2 is 10 cm! They really do look like different strains! They smell differently too. Girl #1 is all diesel and sour, but Girl #2 is fruity and sweet! Note to self: let plants get to a decent size before espaliering, to allow them to have more space between the nodes…

The girls have sprung up this week! The height of the plant is still very small, but the new colas are where it’s at! The pink/green flowers on girl 2 smell great and have grown nearly 7cm. The dark purple on girl one smell different but still good, and only about 4cm growth. The bigger they grow, the more they look like different strains! I think I may have waited too long before harvesting the boy pollen, and a few flowers on the girls may be seeded 🤷‍♀️ I have deliberately seeded both plants with both pollens (where the coloured safety pins are, if you can see them). Ah well, these girls were never going to grow big, and the harvest is going to be tiny!
