Soaked the beans in paper towel until the root emerged. This took 24 hours. From here the seed was placed in 3 inch pots until germination, which took an additional 2 days. From soaking to heads up 3 days which is a textbook start.
I plan to veg these out for 7 weeks. I will be watering with a mix of rain water, pH corrected fish tank water and my homemade compost tea / juice. I don't plan to use synthetic fertilizers, as my goal is to do a full organic/natural grow.
I do plan on pollinating these plants (with feminized pollen) so the final yield numbers are going to be misleading (let you know this from day 1 so that you are not disappointed at the end).
I have not grown many sativa's out so I am very much looking forward to seeing how this plant will shape up. I expect her to be quite big with a 7 week veg, but not using synthetic fertilizers will make the veg a bit slower. Time will tell.
She's up and growing. Have them under 18 hours of daylight. No watering yet, will wait until the soil dries out a bit. She got a bit leggy while I waited for my new light to arrive (spider farmer SF-1000D).
Transplanted into final pots on day 5. They were in small 3 inch pots and the roots were poking out the bottom, so I wanted to get them out. Now that they are in bigger pots, I took the heating pad out and the tent is a bit cooler than I would like, given my exhaust is running for the flowering auto's, which I might need to correct to avoid issues.
Ive got her in a 3 gallon fabric pot, with a potting mix of 30% compost, 50% Coco, 20% perlite. I added about 1/4 cup Gaia green power bloom to the potting mix for slow release nutrients and a 1/4 cup alfalfa pellets as a quick release nitrogen source. I am hoping to use a mix of home made organic fertilizers, to get these ladies full of feminized seeds to the finish line. If things go south, I have backup store bought organic supplements that I will use and worst case, I will bale them out with some synthetics, if needed.
Vegging these til Jan 1, so they could get quite big. Time will tell.
Maui is looking fantastic! Im so pumped. The feminized male I've got is growing some big flowers full of pollen, and this plant is looking really good so far. this project looks like it's going in the right direction.
The plan is to top this plant once the 6th leaf is out, which I am sure will be by day 21. I'm really loving how this plant has started to grow in the last three days. I was worried the cooler temps in the temp were going to be a bit of an issue. I did put in a heat pad to try raise the soil temps but it wasn't very effective so I abandoned that and the plants started to develop anyhow.
I'm quite happy with my spider farmer light so far. Its got these plants off to a really good start. Im hoping the plants grow into the lights a bit as I can't lower the lights any further, but the plants don't look like they are lacking.
Plant grew really well this week. Leaves are nice and green. I was expecting the plant to be taller for a sativa strain but it is very compact with thick wide leaves. The fourth set of leaves are fully out, with the fifth and sixth not far behind. I was planning to top down to the third node, but I will top to the 4th, once the 6th node is fully developed. The tent is on the colder side but the plants don't seem to mind, the growth is slow but not stunted by any means. It could be faster growing if it was warmer but I have to work with what I've got for now.
I thought the plant might have 6 leaves developed and be ready to be topped by this point, but I can see I am not far out, maybe in 3 - 4 days. I will try and grow this out a bit to get some clones off before the flip in the new year.
The Spider Farmer light is doing great. I have not adjusted the height, just letting the plants grow into the light slowly.
Setup update: added a heater to the tent to raise the lights off temp to 21 C and lights on temp to 25 C to boost growth rates a bit.
Have not watered in 3 days, waiting for the medium to dry out a bit more before the next feeding.
mid-week update: Day 23 - topped to the 4th node. will keep the 3rd and 4th node and use the 1st & 2nd for clones. Internode space is much shorter than I expected from this sativa but we will see how it grows in the stretch. So far very happy with the growth and expecting to see it pick up a bit now with a warmer tent.
Day 28 - Week 4 is complete. Good growth this week. The plant has recovered well from topping, with the top nodes about 1 inch long. The fist nodes are quite long, about 4 inches. The plant is very short and bushy, with broad leaves.
Watered today with about 0.75 gallon of water. interested to see if this spurs some additional growth. will prob add pics daily again over the next week.
