Using a Microclone sterile seed germination kit to sterilize, wash, and soak the seeds. Then transferring to rockwool cubes.
3/25 - 1 sprouted so far... been about 72 hours. Hopefully 3 more soon! Temp inside the germination dome is 80°. Little worried about how long it's taken with rockwool, so I moved 3 seeds to paper towels and a plastic container. They are atop the heating mat as well.
3/28 - one more sprouted, and it's popped into a fresh grodan. The other 2, well... I don't know. I'm sterilizing & soaking 3 more seeds and hoping for the best!
3/29 - Waiting on yesterday's seed to sprout from the cube... meanwhile 6 seeds are in the paper towel wrap staying warm.
4/3 - It has taken awhile, and I've made some mistakes. Here's what worked: 80°, dark, several layers of paper towels, a clip latch plastic box, and finally a nice cozy towel wrap.
In the end, 4 germinated seeds, and 1 sprout so far.
4/6 -Who'd have thought just getting them started was proving to be difficult? It seems that I must be more careful when inserting a germinated seed into the rockwool cubes. I noticed that one of the seeds was showing a green stem, but it appeared to be kind of wedged into the top of the cube, and was unable to "spring up". I carefully moved the bits of rockwool from the area, and freed the exposed cotelydons. It seems to be recovering, albeit slowly.
A second sprout was upside down, and the taproot was peeking out of the top of the cube. I extracted the seed carefully from the moist cube and repositioned it correctly (i hope) in a fresh cube. The next day and the sprout is ready to go and shooting for the sun.
That makes 3 viable sprouts, and I am running a 4 bucket system... so I'm germinating a couple more seeds. Started the process yesterday, 4/5.
