Whilst looking for something else I found a tub full of old seeds I'd picked out of some homegrown White Berry a friend gave me years ago. These seeds were approx 7 years old.
I scarified with sandpaper and soaked in warm water in the airing cupboard for 24 hours. I then transferred all non floating seeds to moist paper towel. About 15 germinated but only 12 produced seedlings when planted in soil.
I was not putting serious effort into this it was just an experiment to see if the seeds were still viable. Once I had some seedlings I intended to try some in the garden some on windowsills and some under a tiny full spectrum led light I had for houseplant seedlings and cuttings.
In the end however I left 2 on a windowsill and the rest I put under the tiny 15w light in a room with poor natural light.
The windowsill seedlings failed. In the end nine of the seedlings under the weak light survived.
So we have fast forwarded here 24 weeks.
These regular White Berry seeds were vegetated under 18h 15w full spectrum led and partial daylight for 19 weeks. They were topped at 12 weeks when they reached the light and burned the tops. During this time they were repeatedly left to wilt before overwatering several times (algae on soil surface).
They were not fed at all only watered with unfiltered tap water straight out of the tap.
As a result of the repeated under watering only 4 plants survived, and they were all basically bare sticks with some foiliage at the top due to leaves going crispy and dying off.
At week 19 they were repotted and moved into a grow tent 1.2m x 1.2m x 1.8m. With ventilation and under a budget 600w HPS on 12/12.
They preflowered immediately and I think that lasted about a week and a half. Yesterday marked the end if week 5 since moving to 12/12.
At week 2 of flowering I forgot to water for a few days and I lost 1 plant and 3 badly wilted.
I started feeding with Chempak at week 3 of flowering. So these photos are today, day 1 of week 6 since inducing flowering.
I have lightly defoliated twice during flowering.
Note that I had mild Thrips infestation for weeks unidentified. I sprayed with Neudorff bug spray yesterday at the end of the light cycle. Today there was no smell, nothing flying, and plants look same.
At the moment I think that we're about halfway through week 4 of full flowering. 90% pistils white. Trichomes clear. On that basis I am expecting harvest to be 3-4 weeks from now.
The diary will now be properly updated as best I can for the next few weeks.
I intend to flush 2 weeks before harvest and cease watering altogether 1 week before harvest.
Lastly I am not monitoring CO2, humidity, ph or any of that. I'm being guided by the plants the only symptoms I have seen so far are of Thrips.
So this week has really absolutely crawled by from my perspective, I imagine it is common with growing that the closer you get to harvest the further away it seems. Anyway I am a bit worried about the middle sized plant - she has a lot more yellowing of fan leaves from the inside out. My reaction to this was to flush her with clean water, my thinking is that everything was fine before I started feeding, and perhaps I didn't mix properly and the soluble stuff was unevenly distributed. That was yesterday (week 6 day 4) It's too soon to tell if this has helped, fingers crossed it doesn't begin to affect other leaves.
Despite this being only 5 days into week 6, there have already been fairly drastic changes. Some of the buds are starting to fatten more, and I'd say we're at about 15% pistils amber now, the smell has noticeably increased day by day. It's really beautiful to look the plants in the dark with a flashlight or phone light, the way the light bounces off the frosting of trichomes, as if someone had sneaked in the middle of the night and misted my plants with a million tiny diamonds.
I think I will stop feeding the middle plant now and water only (unless it gets worse). The other two I will continue to feed until the end of this week. At the rate of accelerated change I suspect harvest time may not be too long past the end of next week. It's a shame they don't have much more time to grow but at least what small quantity does come from them, I am determined it is harvested at the right time.
At the end of week six I have watered only as I now think these plants are maybe 7-12 days away from harvest.
This week the yellowing of leaves in plant 2 has continued and started on plant 3.
Trichomes 90% milky. Pistils about 30% amber.
I think they still need a week or maybe two. So I've fed them today with bloom and a bit of extra nitrogen.
Wow what a week this has been, the plants have all undergone fair dramatic changes. A real flurry of leaf yellowing, pistil darkening/curling, and bug swelling. The smell is really coming along now, I think we're really quite close to harvest. On the assumption that pre-flowering was two weeks, this strain should be ready at the end of week seven flowering, so in the case of this diary the end of week nine (i.e. one week to go!).
Pistils are about 70-80% amber, and the lower pistils on buds have started curling inward.
Trichomes look to me to be something like 10% clear 80% Milky 10% White.
I have smoke tested a small bud off the lower part of plant 3 today after quick-drying overnight in the airing cupboard, taking into consideration the obvious chlorophyll from the fast dry, the high was much closer to what I am expecting than the last smoke test. It came on at the normal pace, was quite effective, and lasted a good while. I am really hoping I can navigate my way through the next process, as I feel quite close now to having some home grown bud for the first time.
The plants are being well watered this evening with just water, and this will be the last time that I water them until harvest.
I will continue to monitor these daily, I intend to harvest at the first sign of any amber trichome.
Advice and comments welcomed.
P.S. Exciting news! My order from Green House Seeds arrived today for my next diaries! :)
This week has come with a surprise. Plant 1 is not the same strain as plants 2 and 3. It smells completely different. Luckily they seem to be developing at the same rate.
Pistils are about 90% amber maybe 20% curling.
Trichomes are now at least 90% cloudy.
In my naivety I've felt a week away for a 2 weeks. However I do think the harvest window has now opened so we will keep a close eye on the progress.
Interestingly there is some minor foxtailing. I've raised the light as I think this is heat stress at the top of the plant.
Now I know there are 2 strains I'm excited to try them both.
Another week of crazy change.
Okay plant 1 started popping out nanners, so I removed and harvested it.
Yield from plant 1:
Wet weight: 90g
Dry weight 19g
Lower buds airy, top buds dense. Smoke test after drying, it's a decent high, smoke is quite harsh and taste is not great, but of course it hasn't been cured yet.
Plants 2 and 3 have shown no signs of nanners, and have continued to progress. The smell is now very strong and has changed slightly, and there are now clear signs of amber trichomes, so I have decided to harvest plants 2 and 3 today.
