Full organic grow: Soil "Blackgold Natural and Organic potting soil". I have not been having much success with yield, so I stepped everything up a notch; bigger tent, 600 watt light. I also heard where storing your seeds in the refrigerator was good for germination. Somewhere between these changes I was unable to get a plant started, they shot straight-up and were weak and feeble - I pulled them. So obviously, the "shooting straight-up" was because the light was not close enough. I also took the unorthodox measure of planting the seedling about 1-1/4" deep - breaking the 1/2 inch rule. Once she broke ground, she still seemed a bit feeble, had a hard time holding her head-up. I began to suspect the new light. When I went back to Amazon to check the stats, from my orders - the 600W light was pulled and replaced by a 1000W light, so the manufacturing might be suspect (china). I put my tried and true 300W light back in place. This time I will use the draw strings to keep the light closer to the plant. I also stuck a bamboo stick beside her, propping-up that huge top leaf. I think it is also possible that the weak and feeble plants were caused by refrigerating the seeds, so I have fresh seeds on the way. But it seems as though she will make it. After taking the picture, I realized I could probably pull the bamboo - she is standing on her own. Go with God.
She's definitely healthy. Odd thing though - this is week 2 and she looks like she is trying to auto-flower, on 18/6 lighting. The lower stems clearly have flowers in the elbows. Not real sure what is going on. I purchased photo-period feminized seeds. Will have to monitor, get back to you. You can see little flowers in at least 1 of the lower joints in picture. (Back to you). Okay so obviously the spikes are pre-flowering which identifies sex (she's a girl). But I knew that, nice to confirm that she is on track and not confused by anything. But for her to be two weeks old, and have that significant pre-flowering - startled me. I did not see that in my first two plants.... I had to wait for the two spikes near the top of the plant to confirm sex. Bessie must be something special!
So, I finally figured out what is going on. Brainwreck is reportedly a hybrid. However, what is dominant (based on leaf type) is indica. In fact I see very little presence of sativa. What I thought was pre-flower is actually Ruderalis. Ruderalis when crossed with indica is meant to reduce the grow time. Ruderalis when combined with sativa is how they produce autoflower seeds. The huge indica leaves grow, and the ruderalis spawns from the same elbow as the indica leaf just not as prominent, and always on the bottom. All the top leaves are indica. My guess is that Brainwreck is a ruderalis/indica hybrid, not a sativa/indica hybrid - which is a best guess by all parties. Were it a sativa/indica hybrid then there seems like a possibility for autoflower. Ruderalis is said to have a lesser content of THC, not the top-heavy high or THC content. It is out of Russia, used for depression. This would account for the type of euphoria reported from from the brainwreck strain. Either way, she is right at 8 inches, and I'm going 12/12. The indica leaves definitely match.
Gonna be real interesting to see how she flowers. The were two tiny buds forming on the stems near the bottom, but I trimmed them.... for the same reason I do not top my plants. I only want the larger buds. I do not want all those tiny buds that lose their potency quickly. This is my third plant but this cross with Ruderalis growing from the same elbow as the Indica is mind blowing. Obviously I am trimming the big Indica fan leaves. But the cluster of Ruderalis growing beneath seems to be growing their own cola's. Nothing is happening in the dual elbows. Quite possibly she will grow multiple colas... She did a 3 inch growth spurt, so far. No sign that the growth has stopped and the main cola is growing. Very intriguing. Hoping for a Christmas tree effect.
This is only my third plant but I have never seen flower like this. All the Buds on top of each branch are cola equivalents, and all just as thick. Pistils appear milky white, but when i take the plant outdoors - they are green. Four weeks left, this will be some major bud.
I imagine by now the nutrients, not being added to the soil during watering - are pretty depleted, so I sprinkled a teaspoon of boric acid (boron) directly on the soil hoping to work on the taste of the bud created. I also purchased a new light. The old light was not bad, and did well to get me this far. But I wanted a light to fill the tent with brightness for the final stage. The Philzon 250 did the trick. I started on on full brightness, but had to dial it back to 8 as the leaves, but not the bud began showing heat distress. The flowers are fine. No heat or light stress, which is easy to detect because they would bloom new white pistils on the top of the bud were this the case. There are no signs of stress/discoloration from the boric acid either. The leaves are beginning to brown and curl, as per their normal cycle. They are actually not browning, but curling. The plant is still equal shades of bright green. I tried to get some good shots to show how large the secondary cola's are. Unfortunately I am not good with the camera.
Love it when the bud starts to look gnarly. She is right on schedule. Just waiting on the hairs to turn in and reveal the nuggets. The majority of the trichome's are clear, but beginning to detect some possibly turning white.
After a minor humidity correction, she started pouring on the resin like molasses. She actually has a sweet smell. Technically there is 1 week left in the flowering stage (according to estimates). However, we are not doing a time study. When the hairs turn in, and the trichomes turn milky white - I will harvest. At the top of the process because I want higher THC. The bud development has been truly spectacular to watch. I am sure this will be some good bud.
Based on recommended grow times today would be harvest day. However, having harvested by timelines twice prior and yielding little to no THC, this time I will harvest based on trichome, and flower development. The trichomes are still clear like ice-cycles. This means there is no THC yet. When the turn milky white, like plastic - I will consider harvesting. Then I can compare this time frame to the recommended grow times. There is no longer any visible change to the plant. It is very much alive. I will flush from here on out.
Gonna have to be more careful with my new Phlizon 2000. Too much distance on a low setting, she started growing toward the reflections on the wall. Anyway, as for trichomes, definitely showed progress during the last week, and some are turning white - but I am waiting for the full plastic look. I own a Davinci IQ2 dry herb vaporizer, so I did a sampling from the bottom tier bud, harvested - popped into the vaporizer. I immediately got taste citrus-sy, tingled my taste buds. Then ever so gradually a mild euphoria began to build, and linger for a few hours. Definitely a "head" high, no body effect yet - which is what I am looking for, and why I chose this strain. I will try to harvest on the top-end of the THC, before the body effect kicks in (amber trichomes). But she is still not fully matured. We will wait. The quantity will not be great, but the organic quality will (aka. the plan).
(update) Doing this update to comment on the results of my dry herb vaporizer, and the bottom mini-bud.... Brainwreck is so subtle, in the end it took me about an hour to feel the effects. So I hit the vaporizer containing the sample bud 3 times, and got a boost each time. Then I take the dried bud out of the chamber (oven), presumably drained of THC, and smoke it in the pipe (one hitter). I immediately got the purity of the organic citrus flavor, but assumed the THC was done. About an hour later I realized that I actually got high, and had acute mental elevation the entire time. Cannot wait for maturity. In the mean time I will pick-off the sample buds.
I was waiting for the plastic look of the trichomes, which would mean the THC was at the top of its cycle (more mind - less body). However, when the amber trichomes started coming on the lower bud, harvest time had arrived. A lot of the trichomes were still clear, when the amber trichomes started to enter in. What is unmistakable is the quality of the bud. After I was able to get a proper load on my dry herb vaporizer (the best method for consumption, combustion being the worst), I took 2 hits and was high for 4 hours - without a doubt. This Brainwreck strain is so good you will stop to think if now is a good time to get high. I took another hit and went to bed - heir apparent to the full body affect, I woke up 4-5 hours later still high. My yeild of 6.1 grams does not need to be dried as much because it is going into my vaporizer. I put it under the de-humidifiers while I slept, reduced the weight to 6 grams even. Then I put it directly into my bud jar with a moisture packet to protect the terpenes. I will be growing two plants, organically - this next round. I have already decided that "Brainwreck" will always be one of the two plants. Job done. I have just under a 1/4 oz - that will be vaporized, and the remains smoked. Based on the quality, it will last a minute - anyway.... but what a minute it will be :-)
