This is my first grow using Coco Coir. I soaked the seeds in a glass of water for 24hrs before transferring to propagation sponges and into pots. I kept the lights on for the first 48hrs after the seed popped out of the ground. I do this because I think it reduces stretching in the first few days. I pre-soaked the coir with Nutrients and watered again to runoff on day four as the coir looked very dry. Each plant only took one litre before runoff. My plan is to do a side by side training comparison. This will be my second grow with RQS Orion F1’s. The genetics are super stable so I think it’s a good strain to use for trying out different training techniques to see which produces the largest yield. Thanks to Royal Queen Seeds for sending me these seeds to try out. Seedlings 🌱 are getting around 18,000lux of light 💡

This is my first grow using Coco Coir. When growing autoflowers in soil I have always halved or quartered the manufactures recommended dosage of nutrients. Should I also lower the recommended dosage of nutrients when growing autoflowers in Coco ?

Autoflowers require half dose or less for all medium. They are very light feeders compared to photoperiods.

Good steady growth for the first week and both seedlings 🌱 are very healthy looking. Day and night temperatures have been perfect all week and I’ve been keeping a wet towel in the tent to add humidity. Light at the top of the seedlings is measuring 20,000lux 💡 Day 11: (Tues)Watered with Nutrients to 20% runoff.

Day 15: It’s been another great week of growth. These Orion’s are much further along at this stage than the ones I grew in soil in my last diary. They are also further along than any other autos I have ever grown so I’m presuming this is the benefit of growing in Coco Coir, which is why I switched to this substrate in the first place. I raised the light a little to maintain a distance of 60cm and a light reading of 20,000lux 💡 I will be beginning my HST this week. I will be topping one off these plants. I will be using the method I have seen the grower @JohnnyBlaze using in his diaries and Johnny has been giving me some advice and has kindly offered to answer any questions I have going forward. For the second plant I will be mainly using LST but I do plan on using a bit of HST when I bend over (super-crop) the main stem some time most likely in week five. Day 17: I topped the HST plant today at the forth node. Day 18: (Tues)Watered both plants to runoff. They took 2ltrs each. I removed the cotyledon leaves(seed leaves) from both plants. The HST plant has had no issue with being topped yesterday and there was visible growth in the forth nodes(now top branches). I went ahead and removed the bottom nodes also so now I am left with six branches. Day 21: Removed the lowest fan leaf 🍃 from each plant. Started tying down the branches on the topped plant. I’ll start LST on the other plant in the next day or two. I’m just giving the branches a chance to get a bit longer.

Day 22: Another good week of growing. Topping and LST going well. Started LST today on plant 1 and removed the next two lowest fan leaves on both plants. Plan is to continue LST and defoliation this week. I’m keeping the light around 60cm’s away from the plant still as I have a few yellow tips on leaves even though I only have a light measurement reading of 21000lux💡. I’ll trust the plant though a keep it at a good distance for another while. Day 23: (Sun)Watered with nutrients to run off. I’m using the feeding schedule that I posted in week 1 but I am halving the manufactures recommended dosage. Day 24: Continued with training, just tightening up a few ties and I put another bend in the main stem of the LST plant Day 26: Removed the four biggest fan leaves from the LST plant. Removed the two biggest fan leaves from the HST plant. That’s all the original fan leaves from the main stems gone now. Continued with pulling branches and adjusting ties. Day 27: Removed the lower growth on the bottom branches of both plants. Day 28: More adjusting the ties on both plants. Both have pretty good shapes now. Watered with Nutrients to run off(2ltrs/plant)

Day 29: I’m really happy with how training is going. Both plants are still 20cm’s high which is the same height as last week so there has been some good bending going on and the plants look exactly like I want them to at this stage. Pre-Flowering has started on both plants also. I’ve switched from 18/6 to 20/4 light schedule for the rest of the grow. Day 30: Removed some leaves and lower growth from the LST plant. Both plants have grown 5cm’s vertically in the last 3 days since I stopped bending branches. Day 32: (Tues) Watered with Nutrients to runoff. Both plants took 2ltrs. I started on the pre-flowering dosage of nutrients. I’m still using the feed chart I posted in week 1 and I am continuing to half the manufactures recommended dosage. I also loosened a few tie’s today to avoid snapping any branches as the plant grows taller. Day 34: Clipped four big leaves from the top branches of the Topped plant. Day 35: Watered with Nutrients. 2ltrs/plant including runoff. That’s only 3 days since the last watering so the plants are getting thirstier as they go through their pre-flower stretch.

Day 36: Another good week of growing. Both plants responded well to training. Both plants doubled in height this week. I’m continuing with the feed chart I posted in week one but still having the manufactures recommended dosage. Plants look good and healthy with no signs of deficiency. Day 38: (Mon) Watered with Nutrients, sticking with the pre-flowering dosage. Gave both plants 2ltrs but they had very little runoff. Day 39: I changed growing light today. I switched from the Spider Farmer 1000 to the Spider Farmer 2000. I’m going by my light meter to give me guidance on what % to set the dimmer at and what height/distance to have the light at. I ended up with the light 40cms from the top buds and the dimmer is set at 75%. This is giving me a Lux reading of around 60,000 💡 which should be perfect. Day 40: (Wed) Watered with just PH’d water to runoff to give the roots a bit of a clean before changing to the flowering nutrient dosage.

Day 42: Watered with Bloom dosage of Nutrients. Sticking with half the manufactures guidelines. Everything is looking awesome. I changed to a bigger wattage light during the week. I’m using a Lux meter as a guide and I have the dimmer switch set around 78% which is giving me around 60,000Lux at the top of the plants. It’s hard to predict still which plant will give the biggest yield but the HST plant which I topped and had its bottom 2 branches removed is much easier to manage with only 6 main branches it has less foliage and takes up less space. Day 45:(Tues)Watered with Nutrients. Probably should have been watered yesterday so there was very little runoff. Day 47:(Thurs) Watered with Nutrients.

Day 49: Plants are coming along nicely. I have the dimmer on light set at 82%. Day 50: Watered with Nutrients. Day 52: (Tues) Watered with slightly higher dose of nutrients. Day 54: Watered with higher dose of nutrients, Grow 1.25ml/ltr & Bloom 2.5ml/ltrs. Dimmer on light is up to around 88%. I’ve been bringing it up slowly over the last few days and watching closely for light burn.

Happy Harvest Day!
Rated

Harvested on day 74. The yield from both plants was very close. Four grams extra on the LST’d plant. However going forward I think I will always use this topping/HST method. With only 6 branches the plant takes up less space and is much easier to manage as regards watering and defoliation.

I'm really excited for this comparison. I would like to use one of these methods for my next grow, but I don't know which one yet. Looks very good what you are doing, keep it up bro👌

Nice flower! i was willing to try mainlining vs LST in this run too but unfortunate got only 1 plant from 2 seeds. I will watching your experience instead then, Good luck grow👍
