This is my very first attempt at growing. Any help is much appreciated. I've been trying to read as much as I can, however, there is a lot of conflicting info on the net.
I started germination of this seed on 09/21/18. I started germination in a glass of water and seed opened within 12 hours.
After 24 hours I moved the seed into a 3 gallon fabric pot filled with a mix of 6 parts potting soil, 1 part perolite, and 2 parts vermiculite.
The plant broke through the surface 2 days later on 09/24/18. I did not start LED lighting until day 6. Lighting was one of the topics that had conflicting information. Some said no light until week 2, some said light as soon as plant breaks surface, As for light height, I currently have the 300watt LED at a height of 34 inches and will be lowering it little by little.
Week 1 update:
I added some soil to this pot so the plant is not so tall any longer. I believe she was planted a little too close to the top. All the growth seen in the first picture happened in a dark tent, no light at all. She was over 2 3/4" tall. Now at 1 3/4" above soil.
LED is now at 28 inches from plants, the MARS hydro recommend height for seedlings.
Finishing off week 2 after adding more soil to stabilize the plant and all is well. Plant has nice deep green color and has grown a bit and added a few more leafs. Looks a lot different than it did in week one.
Watering every 2 days or as dry.
I also added some nutrients this week. I am using Suite Leaf nutrients at 1/4 the recommended strength. once the plant grows up some I will increase slowly to 1/2 strength. So far she looks to be liking the nutrients.
On to week 3. Please comment as this is my first grow and appreciate any help you can give.
The end of week 3 saw some continued growth and filling out. Nothing out of the ordinary. Plant appears to be on schedule.
Drinking around 20 ounces of water every other day and nutrients twice per week at 1/4 recommend dosage.
The light was lowered to 20" at the end of the week. We'll see how plants adjust to the lowered light. The light will be lowered to 18" by the end of the week.
When the fan is turned off and I open the tent, you get a mild earthy smell off the plant.
On to week 4.
Week 4 saw some explosive growth as the plant doubled in height up to 6 1/2 inches tall.
This plant has a very sturdy stem as noted when trying to do some LST. I was afraid to bend the main stem in fear of snapping the plant in half. I did tie down a couple of unruly branches though.
Color and smell is great and this is one thirsty plant. Been giving almost 40 ounces of water every other day.
I also lowered the LED to Mars Hydro specs, 18 inches.
On to week 5. Hope all is going well with everyone's grow.
Great week for this little Russian! Almost doubled in size again. Did some LST and a little defoliation. This is one thirsty plant. Watering nearly a 1/2 gallon of pH'd water per day and feeding nutrients twice per week.
This little Russian can take the nutrients and reacts well to LST as she rebounds within the hour.
This plant is looking like a little tree. I have also been adjusting the light distance almost daily as she is growing an inch per day. Hoping for a promising harvest off this one. Keeping my fingers crossed. I will be increasing the nutrients for this one in week 6. Has done well so far. Lets ramp it up a bit and see how she reacts.
Happy Growing and on to week 6!
Had a good week. Plant has taken well to LST, defoliation, and an increase of nutrients. Grew a little and began to flower.
Counted 14 bud sites. So, I'm hoping for a descent yield.
Smelling skunk like.
On to week 7!
I went away on a business trip for 4 days and there was a little miscommunication on watering procedures.
Needless to say the plant was in dire need of a drink. I trimmed off all the dead lower leaves and gave her a good watering.
So far, so good. She came back nicely.
Very strong strain.
On to week 8!
Little Red is chugging along. She grew a little this week and her buds are starting to thicken and fill out very nicely.
The main cola is about 8 inches long and almost an inch and a half thick. The other 11 bud sites are also filling in quickly.
The many, many tricomes are still crystal clear and the plant is giving off an almost rich chocolate scent.
Expecting a good harvest from this one. Please stay tuned.
Happy growing! Any comments??
Buds are nice and frosty thanks to the high amount of trichomes on this plant. Main cola is about 8-9 inches long and 1 3/4 inches thick and still going.
The other bud sites are also starting to fill in and gain some mass.
A few fan leaves have begun to yellow, however, the trichomes are still crystal clear. Looking at another 2-3 weeks to harvest.
On to week 10!
Buds are putting on some weight and are thickening up. The main cola is 2 1/2 inches thick and almost 8 inches long.
The secondary buds are around 2 inches thick and vary in length. Looking forward to a decent harvest.
I am switching to all pH'd water for the next 2 weeks to flush for harvest. Smell is very strong now. Trichomes are still about 95% crystal clear. A few are cloudy. Looks like about 2 more weeks till harvest.
On to week 11! Happy growing.
Things are starting to cloud up. So it looks like harvest will be at the end of next week. I have been watering with pH 6.0 water for the last week. I will continue to do the same for next week.
Buds continue to gain weight, smell great, and are very sticky.
On to week 12!
We'll, old Red only made it a few days into week 12. I harvested her on 12/15/2018. Currently drying then onto curing. I will have a full update on the harvest in a couple of weeks.
Make sure you're following me for a full update.
Until then, Happy Growing!
The grow went easier than expected and I was pleased with the outcome. Beans germinated, grew, flowered, and harvested. What more can you ask for in a first time grow? I would recommend this strain to any beginner as it can put up with a lot of stress.
I feel this was a successful grow being that it was my very first grow. In the beginning, the seed germinated very quickly (within 24 hours) in water. I then put her directly into the pot she was to remain in. The Red Russian XXL was an easy plant to grow and has put up with a lot of stress from a new grower. This strain had 5 weeks of veg followed by 7 weeks of flowering.
The first few weeks I was not using pH'd water, then there was the three day span when I went on a trip and the plants only were watered one time. Came home to wilted plants starving for water. This plant also reacted very well to some simple LST. This strain has a very strong smell once the buds begin to put on some serious weight. The buds were very dense, frosty, and sticky.
At harvest I pulled 5 ounces wet off the plant and ended up with 1 oz dry. Probably could have been more if I didnt stress out the plant so early on. Live and learn.
I had the buds drying for 4 days in my tent before placing them in amber mason jars to cure. So far they have been curing for a little over two weeks as of 12/29/2018.
I would like to thank the community we have here for all your help with this grow!
Your Girl stretches very much. In know your conflict concerning the Light.. ive bought an easy 26 watt Led vegetation lamp for my seedlings . so they can be very near to the light and dont stretch to much you can look at my " cookies for me" diary.....
And the soil looks very wet to me.. your girl needs maybe 2-4 cl (20-40 ml) per day/ per 2 days. The kind of soil youve choosen ( r mixed)looks very good to me and its great that she is still in her final pot
Believe it or not, this growth all took place in a dark tent. No light what so ever. Under the light which is now 24" above the plants, she seems to have stabilized. I think the dirt looks dark not because it was too wet but because I didn't use a flash in a dark tent. This plant is right by the door and looks like there was plenty of light for a picture. Also, thanks for the info about the vegetation lamp. I'm going to look into it.Any other feedback is much appreciated.
