My next run is locked and loaded. I've been given an opportunity to show off yet another fine example of Nirvana's stellar genetics. I'm excited for this one, Swiss Cheese. It's supposed to bring the funk, with an aroma they described as "loud"....I can't wait lol. Thanks again, Jim.
The flower tent just started it's next run, so I got plenty of veg time for these babies. Up front I'm thinking of 2 toppings, then I'll decide if I'm gonna go mainline or SCROG. If I mainline I'll go a little cleaner than my last run. I'm only flowering 4 to allow a little more room this run either way.
So the seeds arrived on 3/18 and went straight into a shotglass of water for an overnight soak. I prefer not to soak until they pop, just long enough to wake them up and soften the shell some. Tap roots are fragile and I'd rather they emerge while in the Rapid Rooter. I try to also keep the hinge up, though if it turns I don't try digging it out either, it will fix itself if it happens. I just use a clear tote for a humidity dome, strictly to keep the Rapid Rooters from drying out, once they emerge it comes off. My basement is on the cooler side so I keep my germination table near the boiler unit to help keep them a little warmer. I prep my coco and fill my pots. I precharged them with some pHed water(@ 5.8) and CalMag. All 5 of these broke ground on the 3rd day and went straight into their 1gal pots on 3/23. This morning(3/24) they're all oriented and pointing straight.
Looks like another hassle free germination, but that's always the case with Nirvana in my experience. They might not carry as big of a selection some of the other breeders/brokers out there but the quality is always top notch. 👌
So far so good with the babies. They got their first real feeding on 3/30. 2nd set of leaves are showing. I'll introduce an oscillating fan soon to begin strengthening the stems. I haven't tagged them yet so they don't have their numbers yet but I will today so we can track individual plants easier.
Got everything numbered and tagged. #1 is showing some weird mottling but I think it will grow out of it. #4 has a couple grey spots on the first leaves, think I might have had my light a tad close so I backed it off a little. Otherwise all going well.
Girls growing well. I raised the light a couple inches to encourage a little more stretch. SC1 is still showing the weird mottled growth but it's not growing any slower than the rest. SC4's rust spots persist and have appeared on a couple more leaves. It's probably lacking a micronutrient but since it's the only one I haven't chased it yet. I'll be increasing my nutrients soon anyway.
Most of the plants were showing around 5 nodes I topped on the 18th, including before and after pics. Today I'll start to new ratios on my feedings. Plants are looking pretty good. I should begin some early training next week.
Plants are looking good. #1 is still showing the weird mottling but it's keeping pace with it's sisters. I reapplied my tie downs to bend the branches around and also removed the first node growth tips. As you can see in my pics, I'm training both branches towards the same side. The plan is to put the pots in the corners of my tent and train towards the center. I'll be topping one more time to create 4 primary stalks to work with.
2nd Topping 4/28
New main branches are responding well after the second topping. Very soon I will need to begin training them out in prep of going under the net when they hit the flower tent. The current occupants of the tent probably have another 4 weeks to go so I'm going to have to get a little creative with plant placement in the meantime. I cleared out the lower leaves to clean things up and make it easier to water.
5/6 Edit:
So I decided on a training plan. First off to accommodate larger plants I went ahead and picked one to remove from the grow. #1 has tried to keep up but the odd mottled growth has definitely slowed it down some. Setting it aside for clones at a later date.
Next I did a little altering to my pallet table so the pots could sit in a lower running board. I'll use the top of the table to anchor the branches for training until the tent opens up.
Continuing to train out the branches as they grow out. Removed the branches budding out that were facing the ground, I'll train out the horizontal nodes once they make it under the net.
My luck finally ran out...broke off two branch tips during training lol. One on #3 and another's on #4. Really been lucky it hadn't happened already with all these wires to contend with. I'll be sooo glad when I can get these in the tent under a net so I can get rid of the wires. I should be chopping my other grow in about a week so I'm almost there. Otherwise they're looking good. I'm gonna get some more coco prepped so I can repot these into 5gal containers.
Busy week. Chopped 5/6 of the plants in the flower tent. The original plan was to dry those in another area so I could get these under the net but it was an unfiltered space....as soon as my wife kicked on the central air the whole house reeked lol. So I went with plan B, pulled the light out of my tent to use while drying in the tent. I'm confident enough that the space is light tight enough to get me by a week or so. I've upped my pots to 5 gal. They started 12/12 on 5/24. I flushed them after repotting and began transition nutrients 5/26. Hopefully it's only a few more days until I get them in the tent so I can get them under a net. Already lost a bit of my training and I don't want these limbs stiffening up before they get retrained.
Second week of transition, noticing a few pistils popping up, next week should be my first documented flower week. My harvest stuff is basically done aside from the 1 I'm letting finish up so I've made the move into the tent and under the net. They're adjusting well to the new environment. As you can see, I put the pots in the corners and I'm training most of the branches to grow towards the center-allowing more tops to be in the better parts of the light footprint.
So this will probably be the last week these girls will be on the transition schedule for their nutrients. Starting Wednesday I'll move to flowering ratios and start incorporating the KoolBloom. On Saturday I did some cleanup and training. Lollipoped and pruned a little. Did some light defoling.
I moved the extra occupant from my last grow outside, she was starting to push bananas and I really don't want to risk pollinating these.
The plants are progressing well. They filled out quickly after their defols, it will be time to do them again in a week or two. The net is pretty well filled out, things are about to go vertical. Started flowering nutrients on the 12th.
Another week on the books and the ladies are looking beautiful. Pretty well done with net training and letting things go vertical. It's about due for a little bit of defoliation, I'll attend to that sometime over the next week.
Decided to do a little under canopy cleanup on 6/23. Provided before and after pics. As you can see, I removed a fair amount but everything above the net is still leafy with no gaps in the canopy really. It's still a little full for my liking, I'll probably remove a few more next week. I don't wanna go crazy, just eliminate a couple pockets where moisture sometimes develops.
I think the stretch is about done. Topping them twice kept them a little more compact than they could have been.
I'll wait a week and if they don't grow more I'll bring the light down an inch or two. The buds deeper in the canopy will thank me I think. I try to leave plenty of headroom during the stretch so I'm not constantly adjusting the light. Even though the plants are compact there are flowers everywhere. I think this is gonna be a solid harvest.
Another week in and looks great. Lowered the light an inch and did another light defol to eliminate some moist pockets. Flowers are starting to fatten up and the smells are picking up. It's advertised as a 7-9 week strain, they seem on track, we'll see.
Another week down and my girls are doing great. That "loud" aroma has definitely hit. =) Nirvana mentioned 2 phenos in the strain description, one that finishes in about 50 days and another that runs 63. I think #5 might be the faster one, it looks a couple weeks ahead of its sisters. #4 is showing some signs of Mg deficiency. I've increased my CalMag a little but I'm not gonna chase it too seriously this late in the game.
The trichomes are still mostly clear but I think things will progress rather rapidly from here.
For those wondering what ever happened to #1 after I eliminated it, it's still alive....I'm too cheap to let it die. It's been getting 24 hour light under the shop light. plan on making a bunch of clones soon. I've cut it back twice now(aside from the original 2 toppings) and it's due to be cut back again...photo included.
We're getting closer. Currently sitting at about 50-6% cloudy. I'll probably be switching over to straight water mid to late next week. Estimating another 10 days until harvest.
Ignore the wet weight, I don't weigh anything until I start jarring. These nugs are pretty dense. Can't wait to give it a try.
Will update ASAP with weights and smoke report. Don't forget to check out my next grow! I'm doing Do-Si-Dos Auto in DWC, it should be fun. =)
