4/25 Just one seed was placed in a shot glass with tap water. I then prepped a new coco mix with intentions of letting it sit for a day or two. The new mix is about 75% canna coco brick and 25% perlite, and it’s worth mentioning there is also a small amount of fine vermiculite in my perlite. I hydrated the brick with RO water that has been treated with mosquito bits to preemptively kill any fungus gnats. I then added in prilled gypsum at .5 tsp/gal and wollastonite at 1 tsp/gal.
4/27 She has a decent little tap root now so it’s time to go in a solo cup. I took a lighter to the 4 corners of a solo cup to make drainage holes and filled up with the new coco mix. I’ve learned to always flush coco NO MATTER WHAT the manufacturer says on the label, so before the seed goes in, I’ll take that solo cup to the sink and flush it with my starter water mix. The water mix starts with 1 gallon of RO water, and then added in is 3mL 35% H2O2, 3.5mL of calmag, 1.25mL of Flora Micro, and 1ml of Rapidstart. This gives me an EC of about .6. I tested the initial runoff EC from the solo cup at a whopping 1.9, so I just slowly flushed the cup out with the .6 EC water until I got the runoff to read a much lower .7. Finally after all that in to the solo cup she goes and it’s time to wait.
4/29 She has popped up and looks healthy. I’ll just mist with tap water occasionally for now to keep humidity levels up and keep on waiting. Tomorrow starts day 1 of veg.
5/9 Day 10 of veg. Growth has been good, no surprises. I’ve made sure to flush out the solo cup with nutrient water about every 2 days. Runoff EC is stable at about 1.1 – 1.2.
5/10 Day 11 of veg. Transplant day. I have the new DTW system hooked up now and have flushed the 3 gallon airpot until the runoff read 1.4 EC. I added marble chips to the top of the pot after transplanting since the water pressure coming out of the hydro halo was really strong and digging into the coco. Seems like it’s helped blunt the force and spread the water out a bit more.
5/17 Day 18 of veg. Growth has exploded the last few days and all looks well. Light is currently set to 320 PAR / 20.7 DLI.
5/20 Day 21 of veg. Today was topping day. I left her with 4 nodes which will be topped again when ready for 16 total tops.
5/22 Day 23 of veg. Light increased to 400 PAR / 26 DLI.
5/25 Day 26 of veg. Growth has been explosive so it was time for a big defoliation. The internode spacing on this is super tight, which is good, but also means everything is stacked right on top of itself. It’s a bit more airy now after the defoliation, so that will have to do.
5/27 Day 28 of veg. Light adjusted to 462 PAR / 30 DLI.
5/31 Day 32 of veg. Today was another big round of defoliation and topping. So far this plant is stacking nodes super close together and has grown mostly as a big ball of leaves. Trimming through some leaves I found a mutation causing extra leaves and branches to grow out of the same spot. I only topped the top 2 nodes as they were well ahead of the bottom 2 nodes and some catch up time will help.
6/2 Day 34 of veg. I did even more defoliation to keep things as airy as possible. With growth stacked like this it’s difficult to have any space in between leaves. Hopefully soon I’ll have enough growth to start using the trellis net to assist in spreading her out.
6/5 Day 37 of veg. At this point I’m more confused than anything. I’ve never seen a plant grow this short and bushy. It’s not stunted or anything as you can see the growth, particularly in how thick and burly the stems are becoming. Couple that growth with some kind of mutation that has multiple branches growing out of some nodes and it’s a real head scratcher. I suppose I have no choice but to flip to flower soon and just see what happens. Maybe I’ll get a big stretch and everything will be go back to normal. We’ll see.
6/7 Day 39 of veg. I think with this style of growth it’s best to just flip her to flower now. I can’t spend a month or 2 more growing the world’s burliest bush just for the sake of filling out the tent. Hopefully I get a massive stretch to offset it.
6/8 Day 1 from flip. Did some light defoliation to improve airflow.
6/19 Day 12 from flip. I finally felt I could use the trellis net to spread some branches out and gave her a good defoliation. She’s still a compact mutant shrub who refused to gain much size, and sadly I am debating if I’m wasting my time by flowering her out. I think I’ve come this far though and with the short flower cycle of Blueberry Muffin I suppose we’ll see what she can do. She’s a weird one, and obviously the yield is likely to be terrible. The best result here is a small amount of high quality weed, so that’s the hope now for this grow.
6/24 Day 17 from flip. I’ve kept up with defoliation for this super dense bush. Now that we’re firmly in flower I can at least estimate what I’m looking at, and I’m trimming off excess branches to make sure everything has room. This is the strangest grow I’ve ever had but we’re gonna see what she can offer.
7/8 Day 31 from flip. She’s been largely left alone for almost 2 weeks now. I’ve obviously been watering every day and checking around for any issues, but so far she’s been on autopilot with no concerns. Super strange grow, but everything appears on track. I measured the light to see where we are and at the highest point I read 800 PAR and around the edges it’s closer to 725 PAR. This seems just fine to me so we’ll continue to stay hands off and let her cook.
7/19 Day 42 from flip. This is turning out to be a dumpster fire. I knew she was some weird mutant but I decided to go forward anyways. This was a mistake. The buds are not really adding size and staying very small and fluffy. The grow is pretty much spot on so there’s no real explanation for this other than the mutation. To add to that, I’ve somehow acquired a fungus gnat infestation. This just blows my mind since I layered the top of the pot with marble chips to prevent this from happening. Part of me wants to chop it now, but the other part says we only have about 2 more weeks to go until the supposed harvest time. I’ll leave her alone for now, but I’m not sure for how long.
*** She's been chopped down and thrown out. This should have ended a while ago but I stuck it out and lost a lot of time. Lesson learned. ***
