I was given some space in a greenhouse so I thought I'd try growing some regular seeds this summer.
My goals for this project are to obviously produce some quality sun grown organic medicine, and also try to perpetuate these wonderful genetics and do some pheno hunting.
They're coming along nicely so far. I'm going to try this as a "set and forget" run unless the plants start showing they need a boost. My experience with the Lucid Dream is that these plants can get close to 2 meters tall without a lot of attention.
The whole greenhouse is having an issue with spider mites. Not something I've had to deal with growing outdoors, but it's being addressed. They got out of hand pretty quick, but only one of my plants seems to have been effected. It was 113 degrees this week, so not ideal for growing cannabis (or anything else really). But they are still looking good.
They are coming along nicely. The Lucid Dream plants are healthy and the Malawi plant is at least twice the size of the others. I rearranged them to even out the sun exposure.
They're still going strong. The Malawi mix is about 12" tall now and looking good. 2 of the Lucid Dream plants are about 10" and starting to branch from the lower nodes. There's one runt plant, but it still looks healthy otherwise.
They have not received any nutrients up to this point and I don't see any reason to do so right now. The weather has been incredibly hot and I'm not sure if they would have gotten to this point if I was trying to grow them outdoors.
So far so good. Up to this point they've only gotten water, and they are still coming along nicely. The Malawi mix is about 18" and 2 of the Lucid Dream plants are starting to catch up. The one runt is still healthy.
I'm guessing they have about 6 more weeks of veg time so I need to think about finding enough space for them to start stretching out inside the greenhouse.
We're in the really critical time right now. It's been really hot and supposed to be 115 this week. Many of the early fan leaves were drying up so I gave them a trim. Gave plant LD 2 and the Malawi mix a pretty good trimming. The Malawi mix is very branchy so I wanted to get the fan leaves out of the way. Plants are all starting to smell nice even though they won't be flowing for another 6 weeks or so.
They've all responded well to the trimming from last week. The Malawi mix is now about 2' tall and lots of branches. The runt plant is looking very healthy and I trimmed off a bunch of the lower stuff this week.
They're also smelling very nice at this point. We've had temps close to 120 this week and it's only about 10 degrees cooler in the greenhouse, so I'm really pleased with how they're coming along.
They are still coming along nicely despite the ridiculous heat. I gave them another pruning today and another light feeding of kelp extract. The Malawi mix is now about 3 feet tall and has a lot of long side branches that would probably make for some nice clones. Should be another month before they start flowering.
My goal at this point is to breed the Malawi mix with the Lucid Dream so we'll see how it goes.
Still going strong. The Malawi mix wasn't getting enough water so I did some defoliating and gave it a good soaking. Will need to make some adjustments there. It's got some really long branches now.
The Lucid Dream plants are all looking really nice. The runt is smelling incredibly. I think they will start showing sex in about 3 weeks or so.
Overall I'm very happy with how they're doing considering how easy this grow has been.
They bounced back nicely from last week with a little more water. I gave them another trim this morning to thin out the undergrowth and make room for the branches. No nutrients this week.
The runt is probably my favorite at this point because it turned into a gorgeous little plant and has the loudest odor out of them all. I'm very happy with how they're coming along.
Not much change from last week. They are still coming along nicely. I did a little more defoliating this week. Lucid Dream 3 (the runt) has turned into a little beauty and has the strongest smell so I'd really like to breed with that plant. LD 2 has also rebounded very nicely considering I trimmed it almost down to the stem a few weeks ago.
Outdoor plants typically start to show sex around mid-August here so I should know what I'm dealing with in another week or two.
Not much change from last week. The Malawi plant looks like it may need some food, but the rest are doing just fine. None of them are showing any signs of gender yet.
More of the same this week. Another light trim and I fed them a little bit of the kelp extract. I didn't have my glasses so it was hard to tell, but I think LD 3 is starting pre-flower. None of the others are showing any signs
Another week in the books. Malawi mix and LD 1 aren't showing any signs of sex yet. LD 2 & LD 3 have started to develop flowers.
I'm on the fence about whether I'll let the males pollinate them. I have so many seeds now of different genetics that I'm leaning towards removing any males from this grow.
Thanks for checking in and I hope your season is going well.
Not much change this week. Temps are still around 110 but at least the days are shorter as we approach the equinox. Doesn't look like there's any relief in sight for the weather but at this point I'm not too worried about it. They've made it this far without showing any real signs of stress and I think the greenhouse is a viable option for me during summer.
I'll probably start another outdoor auto run in a few weeks.
Another week without much change. Malawi mix and LD 1 still aren't showing anything. We had another week of really high temps and the Malawi plant is looking pretty beat up because the drip line got moved out of place. If those 2 aren't showing anything by next week I will probably take them out so I can focus on the other two.
Malawi mix and LD 1 are males and I decided to pull them out so the girls have more space and get more light.
LD 2 is the plant that I was worried about not making it back in July when I trimmed her down to the stem. She came back nicely and now has lots of bud sites forming.
LD 3 was originally the runt but has been the prettiest plant throughout this grow and also has the loudest odor. LD 3 also has some purple coloration around the fan leaf stems.
We had another week of really high temps. It was over 110 all weekend. I was out of town so was lucky that they are in a greenhouse hooked up to irrigation or they would have been toast. LD 3 is flowering much better than LD 2 and the smell is really nice. If it ever cools off I might move them to my backyard so they can finish out in full sun.
For being almost 5 weeks into flower, I wasn't happy with the lack of bud development so I decided to move them to the backyard. Hoping that more direct sunlight will help the buds fatten up. We'll see how it goes. I'm also going to increase feeding this week. Usually at this stage I cease giving any nutrients but I think they have a ways to go to finish. Don't think this is going to be an 8-week flower.
Not sure what happened with these. The flowers just stopped forming after about the 2nd week. Some are getting close to ripe but still really small and pathetic. LD2 has got barely anything worth harvesting at this point. They started flowering around the 3rd week in August and almost 2 months later the buds are about the same.
After about 7 weeks into flower the buds from the lower branches are just about done. Now buds are finally starting to develop around the top of the plants. This is definitely a first for me. Since I don't think the temperature will ever get low enough to kill the plants, I guess I'm just going to harvest the lower stuff first and see what happens.
Trimmed off the lower branches where the buds were finished and they are currently drying. I'll probably keep that stuff for making tea. It's not much to look at but smells very nice. Buds continue to develop around the top of both plants.
Approaching the 6th month and they're still going and continuing to get ripe. LD3 is showing a lot of purple and LD2 is not at all.
This is the 11th or 12th week of flowering and they still have a ways to go
They're still doing their thing. Buds are filling out and they are giving off a great powerful aroma. Still looking like they need a little more time though. These are by far the longest flowering plants I've ever grown
I was out of town for a while and didn't know what to expect when I got back but they're still going. Getting close now and I'm thinking maybe next week they'll get the chop, but we'll see. Going into about the 12th week of flowering and finally looking like the finish line is near.
Guess I should have expected a long "sativa" type of flowering period with these considering they are supposed to be Blue Dream x Amnesia Haze.
It's always bittersweet for me when the plants get the chop. Of course this is the goal, but after caring for them for 6 months I always feel an attachment.
Anyway I am very happy with how this experience went and I can now plan for doing 2 harvests per year going forward.
If you've followed along with this journal, thanks and I hope you enjoyed it. If anything I hope it inspired you and showed that it doesn't take a lot of money or effort to produce your own quality cannabis. Happy growing and see you in the springtime.
