I grew out the gmo as the “rootstock” and grafted the Chem D onto it after a little over a month of growth.
The goal of this project is to create a grafted mom that will keep me within my 4 plant count, and hold as many strains as I want. I usually grow one in my 4x4 and 2 in my 5x5 at all times on perpetual harvest.
Learning Points: I suggest doing this in soil because the plant has grown too quickly for me in coco and is hard to manage. I plan on remaking this plant in soil when my gmo harvest finishes up to help slow growth.
This is the week before the graft. Both plants are big enough to perform the grafting project. I happened to need a few gmo clones so I wound up attempting both grafts where I took clones from. I attempted two grafts in case one didn’t work.
I cut the stems of the gmo mom in the center about an inch into the already snipped branch. Then I cut the scions’ (chem d getting grafted on) stem into a V shape so it would fit snugly in the 1 inch cut I made in the gmo branch. I then used grafting tape to secure the scions to their new moms. I then placed a zip lock bag (as closed as I could get it) over the new graft areas.
I wound up with one successful graft (spoiler: its Graft 1). I think I made it harder on them at first by not securing the tops of the bags so the bags were hanging, rather than resting entirely on the new grafted areas.
Graft looked to be accepted after 8 days. I left the bag on a couple extra days and by day 12 I would take the bag off for a couple hours to “harden off” the grafted portion. I did that for two days then left the ziploc bag off after that.
This experiment has been a lot of fun and is very helpful for me now with my plant count limitations. I plant to keep a grafted mom moving forward but as I mentioned I’ll remake it in soil this fall so it grows slower - I don’t need a super fast growing mom plant. Soil is more forgiving as well and is another reason I will use it going forward. The next plant grafted on will be a “Mystery OG” I like a lot but don’t have any provenance for, it’s just a great OG cut a friend has. After that will probably be super lemon haze.
