Velvet Bud is a revamp of Seedsman's original Purple Skunk strain which has been re-fashioned to produce a much smoother smoking experience - hence the new name Velvet Bud which is a close relative of our Purple Bud. Although very smooth it nonetheless packs quite a punch; its powerful effect results in a very laid-back high which happily also has anti-anxiety properties. Although suitable for growing indoors, outdoors and in a green house its 9 week flowering period is somewhat restrictive for outdoors growers except in warmer regions where the October harvest is not adversely affected by the onset of colder, wetter weather.
Velvet Bud's Skunk influence is reflected in the fairly long side-branching and this quality helps to increase the yield which, while not exactly bumper in size, is certainly more than worthwhile especially when taking into consideration the taste and smoothness of the smoke once cured properly.
So I started this been off on Thursday the 6th of December by placing her directly from the packet into John innes seedling and cutting soil, in a 7cm pot and lightly saturated with a small dose of acti-vera! She had surfaced sometime between 3-8am this morning so germination has taken roughly two and a half days! This grow I am going to be using biobizz soil and nutrients, i have ran this strain before and had issues with yellowing early in flower so will probably be adding some soil amendments such as epsom salts and dolomite lime too. I will be topping this lady aswell as doing some low stress training so fingers crossed she does better this time round!
D1/w2 today I have changed the light schedual from 24hrs to 18/6 I have also introduced bio grow today at 0.2ml/l for her first feed.. she looks a little over watered though at the moment so hopefully she recovers from that but for now that's about all there is to update.
So I have missed a few updates in this diary, I haven't got an excuse I just kept forgetting to put them up so here we are, we have just gone into week 5 so I will be transplanting a final time in the next day or two and then will be tying her down again properly to continue training and she still has a couple weeks to go before she gets the flip so still plenty of time to develop more bud sites and thicken up some more
So since my last update she has been transplanted for a final time to a 20l pot, I have moved things around slightly now though she she is now under my 600w hps to finish the veg stage off and will be flowering under the same light! I have carried on the training and will keep it going till the flowering stretch has ended, i have tidied the bottom of the plant up a bit so that she focuses more on the top of the plant.. she has come along pretty well though and she is one of my biggest plants going at the moment so I'm looking forward to seeing how she gets one from here on out!
Here we are at the end of week 7.. this velvet bud is one of if not the biggest out if the plants I am currently running.. but still isn't showing signs of gender yet despite being a feminized seed.. So will be keeping an eye on that.. as you can see she is coming along well since my last update and given her size I'm looking forward too seeing how she gets on, just keeping my fingers crossed that it's actually a female.
Since this I have put the velvet bud through 24hour dark period and she has had her first day of 12/12 so will be posting for week 8 on Sunday
Week 8, week 1 of 12/12.. so this week the girls have been given the flip, this velvet bud has shown a bit more vigorous growth then the rest of the strains in this tent, the first week of the flowering stretch and she shot up pretty quick so looking forward to seeing how big she gets, she is filling out nicely too.. I have continued on just bio grow this week but next week I am going to introduce a quarter strength dose of bloom to help kick them off a little quicker
So at the end of week 2 here with this velvet bud, she has probably stretched a little more then I would have liked over this past week so node spacing is quite wide and I feel the bud formation isn't going to be very tight! She is coming along well though so I'm still happy with her at the moment and she is starting to smell quite bitter but really skunky. I have finished training and don't think there is anything left to do with her anymore apart from letting her grow out so
forward to seeing her progress! I have added a top dressing of dolomite lime and will be giving a feed of Epsom salts towards the end of this next week
So this update is for day 21 of 12/12, the stretch has pretty much come to an end now and buds are starting to fill out, she is getting an bit frosty too. I have dropped the light 2 inches because her fans look a bit like they are stretching for it so will see how she gets on and then adjust again if necessary.
D28 of 12/12 not too much to update really, she still getting a little taller, buds are starting to fill out now and getting a bit frostier everything else seems to be alright as not come into any problems with her so far so hoping she finishes off nicely
D35 of 12/12... not too much to update really, she is starting to get quite dense and her buds are beginning to swell now so hoping she fills out well during these next few weeks! Frost is starting to stack hip a bit now too, I can't put my finger on the aroma but she stinks and really skunky too so I'm quite looking forward to trying her when she his finished!
@skidmarx, thanks man, to be honest I normally just tie some string from the branches to the top of my tent, a bit like the yoyo's I guess. Seems to do the job though mate
@skidmarx, thanks mate! To be honest man I appreciate all advice and opinions.. I'm no expert and others might pick up on something I have missed so I'm grateful! Everything has evened out pretty nicely though so far so hopefully I can stay on top of it!
You made lovely choices! Have you thought of dropping your light a bit letting the girls fatten up their stems? I'll be following you regardless! Keep it up!
@skidmarx, yeah mate my plans have changed a little though tbh, I have missed a week out due to getting ready for Christmas with the family ECT but will have up an update today.. I'm sacking the led of for this run and veging under a 400w hps, they have been transplanted into 5l pots now too but where the straw was the stems had started rooting underneath it so I have buried it upto the first set of leaves so that too should help them thicken up a little! Thanks though mate!
