9/11 Two Mac n Jack seeds started in paper towel
9/14 Both have sprouted in their starter pots. Today will be day 1.
9/16 Day 3 of veg. Growth looks normal all around.
9/21 Day 8 of veg. No surprises yet.
9/23 Day 10 of veg. Transplant day. I cleaned up two 3 gallon air pots and filled them with the same coco/perlite mix. After transplanting I did top off the top with marble chips, mostly to help disperse the water coming from the hydro halos and for a nice aesthetic. Once everything was complete and hooked up I ran nutrient water through them both a few times to flush out the pots. Initial runoff EC was 2.5 which is of course much too high, but it eventually came down to 1.4.
9/25 Day 12 of veg. Both look perky and happy today so the transplant went well.
9/28 Day 15 of veg. Growth is great. No surprises. Light adjusted to 280 PAR / 18.1 DLI.
10/1 Day 18 of veg. Both were topped today. I’m trying something new this time around and leaving 3 nodes on each and will then top again later on, creating 12 tops per plant. I want to do a more complete trimming of all side branches and focus solely on tops, and I think 24 is the right number to fill the tent.
10/4 Day 21 of veg. Both took the topping well, but the phenos are starting to separate from each other. Number 1 (on the left) appears to have smaller, more slim fan leaves, leaving all node sites with plenty of light. Number 2 (on the right) has big, thick fan leaves that required a little leaf tucking for now to keep node sites in the light.
10/11 Day 28 of veg. I did some defoliation today to get some more light into the tops. Also noticed that where I used an LST clip on number 2, the stem had broken and I lost it. Fortunately, I left a lower node on that particular branch so the branch isn’t useless, it’ll just have 2 tops a little behind the others. Light adjusted to 370 PAR / 24 DLI.
10/26 Day 4 from flip. I’ve been keeping up with readjusting the trellis net and trimming off nearly every side branch that starts growing. Everything looks great, no issues. Light adjusted to 620 PAR / 26.8 DLI.
11/1 Day 10 from flip. I am starting to see pistil hairs on both and no signs of male parts. So far so good. The trellis has helped keep everything pretty even on the canopy so far. I was aggressive in trimming side branches earlier but I’m gonna back off for now, give them a break from the stress and just focus on the stretch. Light adjusted to 675 PAR / 29.2 DLI.
11/7 Day 16 from flip. Another big defoliation day after leaving them alone for a little bit. I redid the trellis, hacked off most suckers, and removed any leaves that were blocking tops. This is the most aggressive I’ve been with defoliating so I’m gonna hope it all works out. With it being more than 2 weeks since the flip I would expect to start seeing buds forming any day now, so this is probably it for aggressive defoliation. Light adjusted to 780 PAR / 33.7 DLI.
11/14 Day 23 from flip. The stretch has been explosive, so much so that I’m beginning to have height concerns. I can probably add another trellis net and lower it down a little bit, but not by much. I just have to hope they level off soon. I’ve needed to turn the lights down every day or two, and even then I’m at almost 800 PAR / 34.6 DLI at the topmost part of the canopy. The majority is closer to about 725 PAR / 31.3 DLI so I’ll leave it there for now.
11/19 Day 28 from flip. Well, the stretch sadly hasn’t stopped. I was able to raise my lights a few extra inches but it’s now maxed out at the top of the tent. The topmost branch is about 12” away from the lights so this really is about as much as I can realistically handle. I realize Ethos was up front about sending this strain into flower earlier than normal due to the way it grows but this is really nuts. We’ve now easily tripled, if not almost quadrupled, in height and lord knows how much there is still to go. Stretch aside, everything else with the grow is bang on. Everything looks healthy, no signs of any disease or pests, every branch has solid airflow around it with nothing being too crowded. I just need the stretch to stop and everything will be great.
11/22 Day 31 from flip. Today is the first day that I took a tape measure from the lights to the topmost part of the canopy and I haven’t seen a change. I’ll check again tomorrow but I’m really hoping the stretch is finally done. I still have about 10 inches of space between the lights and canopy so I think I’ll be ok with that. I took the chance to do what is hopefully a near final defoliation of a few leaves and some smaller sucker branches that won’t amount to much. Everything still looks super healthy, no red anywhere on any stems and no discoloration on the leaves. Everything is spot on. Light adjusted to 840 PAR / 36.3 DLI.
11/25 Day 34 from flip. I made some adjustments to my nute mix to be more firmly at 1.3 EC, which means I’ve added some additional nutes into the mix. I also tested runoff EC and discovered things were spiking a bit more than I’d like. So I mixed up a few batches of my new mix and I’ve been feeding every few hours to flush things out a little bit. I’ve brought it down from 1.9 to 1.5 so far after this. I may finally need to break down and set up some timers to feed multiple times throughout the day. Obviously once a day is not getting done right now.
11/26 Day 35 from flip. I finally got the timer hooked up to my pump to begin automatic watering. For now, I have it set to water at noon for a minute when the lights come on, a 2 minute pause to let that settle, and then 30 seconds more to make sure both are fully saturated. The second fertigation event will be at 6:00 for 45 seconds, and then right before lights off another 45 seconds. I’ll have to keep an eye on it to see if I need to adjust any more for now. I haven’t adjusted the lights since last time, but the latest reading is 885 PAR / 38.2 DLI at the highest point of the canopy. It’ll stay there for now.
11/29 Day 38 from flip. Even with watering 3 times a day now, my runoff EC is holding steady around 1.6 EC with an input EC of 1.3. I suppose I could water 4 times a day, but with limited reservoir space and with each plant only having a 2 gallon pail for runoff I’m hesitant to increase it much. If it can hold there for the grow then I don’t think I’ll have any issues. Both pheno 1 and pheno 2 look great though, nothing to complain about. No signs of herms, no odd discoloration anywhere, no pests or disease, and buds forming fast and furious. Lights adjusted to 920 PAR / 39.7 DLI.
12/4 Day 43 from flip. I’ve been experimenting with my nute mix over the past few days and I hit a point where I saw some clawing on the tips of the leaves, an obvious sign of too much nitrogen. So, I reworked it all again to be closer to what I was originally feeding. This puts me back around 1.1 EC for the mid bloom formula, which I was concerned was a bit low, but I’ll see what this change does before I go playing around again. Growth is fantastic despite all of that happening, and I can safely say I’ve never needed to water this much before. Absolutely the thirstiest girls I’ve ever grown, so much so that I finally had to set up the automatic timers for the pump. For now it waters once at lights on, again 6 hours later, and then lastly right before lights out. Run off EC has been holding steady at 1.6 EC, a little high but as long as it’s not climbing I’m fine with it, especially since I can barely keep up with the water demand using a 13 gallon trash can for a reservoir. Lights are staying where they are for the foreseeable future, I want to try more but I know I’m real close to the limit so I probably shouldn’t push it.
12/13 Day 52 from flip. I’ve been mostly hands off for a while now, just refilling the res and letting the timer do it’s thing. Runoff has slowly come down to input EC so no issues there. Pheno 1 seems to be growing more round, bulbous type buds and pheno 2 is growing more pointed triangle shaped buds. Interesting difference. The frost has been really coming lately too which is nice to see.
12/18 Day 57 from flip. I’m starting to see signs of fade in leaves now. I also reworked the nute schedule again as these girls are showing signs of too much nitrogen still. It’s a little scary being down to 1.0 EC, but clearly raising everything to hit 1.3 EC is too much. Even with that though both phenos look spectacular. Pheno 1 seems to be the stand out with loads of frost and a fat bud structure, and even some hints of purple coming along. Pheno 2 still looks great, but with a more conventional triangle shaped bud structure and with more conventional levels of frost. Both smell great and are mostly the same. Buds seem very dense, even down low.
12/21 Day 60 from flip. Buds keep getting bigger and frostier. I can tell some stalks are beginning to lean a bit due to weight, I’ll probably need to do some tie offs soon to keep them upright.
12/27 Day 66 from flip. Pheno 1 is showing a lot of fade and curling leaves now, while pheno 2 is only just starting to fade. I anticipate going at least another 2-3 weeks after finally taking a look at the trichomes. Both are pretty similar with mostly clear and a small amount of cloudy trichs.
1/6 Day 76 from flip. The frost keeps packing on, which at this point is absolutely ridiculous on pheno 1. It’s almost to the point where you can’t even see green on the buds anymore, just frost. Pheno 2 is a bit more conventional looking still, with some added frostiness lately but not anything like pheno 1. The terps are slightly different too. While pheno 1 is coming in a bit more gassy, earthy, and lemony, pheno 2 is straight up sharp lemon with very little else. Both seem like they’ll be great in their own way. A trichome check shows about 50/50 clear and cloudy with some hints of amber coming in. It’s hard to say how much longer they need exactly, but for now I can safely say another week is still needed. I’ll be transitioning to my ripen nutrient mix now, cutting down slightly on calmag and bloom, and then removing entirely silica (which I started doing about 5 days ago), bloom booster, and humic acid. Lights adjusted to 815 PAR / 35.2 DLI.
1/15 Day 85 from flip, which is about day 71 of flower. I think both are ready for the chop finally. Looking around the tent today I noticed most leaves up at the top were crispy and falling apart, so I went and trimmed all those off. Looking at trichomes for pheno 1, its pretty close to 50/50 clear and cloudy, but I’ve noticed the amber is really starting to come in. Pheno 2 is more cloudy than clear, and also with a decent amount of amber showing up. I don’t want a large amount of amber trichomes and think it’s about perfect right where it is, so even though both still have some clear I think it’s time to call it. Tomorrow will be chop.
