Week 4 update: Day 28 (H1, SensibleSeeds OG Kush Auto) and day 25 (H2, FastBuds WestCoast OG Auto) It has been a busy week in the garden. I spent about 8 hours this week adding lights and new rigging. And the benefits are starting to show, especially with the Hempy Buckets. Light: 20/4 cycle under 2-60w, 3500k, AutoCobs, distance from canopy 12 -18 inches Medium: 4 inch Rockwool cube in 5 gallon bucket of 100% Perlite Feed: 1/2 gallon (64 oz) H2O (temp 69F @5.8pH) with 2 grams of MegaCrop (4g per gallon) each (ppm is 650-700) Note: I don't pay to much attention to ppm because I use RO water (25-35 ppm from Ca being added back to the water) and I'm just weighing the amount of nutes to add to 1 gallon, pH it and I'm done. Room Temperature: 72-78 F Leaf surface Temperature: 68-82 F (always below 85 F) RH: 45-60% CO2: Lights On: 800-1200, Lights Out: 350-450 It has been an explosive few days since the new lights were added. They each gained 4 inches in 3 days. Okay so this is where we are at with the hempy buckets. Plants are doing great; color is good, maybe a little on the light green side compared to my organic garden (see pictures); good height and branching; no signs of deficiency or leaf tip burn. They are drinking plenty of water. Each girl gets 64oz each day and I measure the run off to see how much they drank that day. H1 returned 16 oz, intaking 48 oz. H2 returned 36 oz, intaking 28 oz. Now, when H1 does not return anything that means she is drinking all her feed and I will increase her feed by feeding (64 oz) her twice a day or drill a new drain hole in the bucket at the 1 gallon (128 oz) level and cover the lower drain hole. You could just increase to 96 oz and save on nutes if you think the plant will never take in more than that per day by the time harvest comes around. I'll decide what to do when I get to that bridge. So far it has been easy going (except germination, I'm not comfortable with all the handling), water 'em every day and watch 'em grow. I guess that's it for now. Thanks for tuning in and feel free to comment or question anything. All are appreciated. Peace

Grow Questions

The color of these girls seems to be on the light side compared to my organic garden. Leaves are darker green around the edges. Deficiency or not? I am trying to run MegaCrop only from start to finish, currently feeding 4g/gallon/day. Should I add CalMag to the mix?

Hi @Smowkabowl! First of all, don't panic, I see no signs of a serious deficiency nor toxicity here. I've been using MegaCrop for the last months with mixed results, and I admit it is sometimes hard to balance, especially when you start mixing MG with CalMagPro + SweetCandy + BudExplosion. You can keep using MG only, since it already contains Calcium and Magnesium, but you should probably increase the amount of MG in your solution, 4g/Gal is the average dose recommended by GreenLeaf, but if the plant looks pale you can add more MG into the mix. In this situation I would increase the MG ratio up to 5-6g/Gal and see how the plant is reacting after a few days. If the yellowing becomes serious, then consider adding CalMagPro into your solution. Hope this will help, keep us up-to-date and happy growing! ๐Ÿ‘Š

Damn dude a 5 ft tall Auto?? Good thing I didn't get this strain. The Kush I grew was over three feet tall. Yours is getting to the point of being an ornamental plant for the living room. Lol! This should be a massive harvest.

@Smowkabowl, They are still looking great! I wish I could figure out what makes some of them flower so slow. One of mine still is not hitting full flower.
Smowkabowl
Smowkabowlcommented6 years ago
@@cylentknight, Right! These two girls are pretty big but I think it has to do with a couple things. I used a 5 gallon bucket and Mega Crop nutes. Plus my light distance could have had a factor although I tried to keep it fairly close the whole grow. More the bucket size and the nutes. If I do Hempy buckets again I will use a 2.5 to 3 gallon bucket. Peace

Interesting setup. You going to be oxygenating your reservoir, or draining it completely after every feeding?
Wicked_Stix
Wicked_Stixcommented6 years ago
@Smowkabowl, It is strange that the perilite would increase your ph since is pretty much neutral. RO water does increase ph just from being exposed to air. My RO comes out of the filter at around 4 ph. Just letting it sit overnight without any air pumps or anything brings the ph up to about 6.

Smowkabowlcommented6 years ago
@Wicked_Stix, thanks for taking the time dude, I appreciate all the advice I can get. I use RO water and during my last grow I would use an air stone in my reservoir. It would raise my pH by 1 to 2 points, so, this grow I decided not to use it and my water is pH'ing at 6.8. Perfect for my supersoil grow and just a few drops of pH down for the hempy buckets @ 5.8. I washed the perlite in both buckets with 5.8 RO water until it ran clear, about 5 gallons each. I did notice that when I would pH the run off it had increased to about 6.5 on average. Is it common for the pH to increase on return? Anyway, I will keep an eye on everything, probably over think it and keep my water temps down, been averaging about 73 F, lately. I'll definitely holler at ya if I got any questions or concern. Peace

Wicked_Stixcommented6 years ago
@Smowkabowl, Sorry I just saw your comment. I never let mine go for more than 6 hours without being flushed out. Once a day might work great for you. I believe high water temps (almost 90 degree) played a part in my root issues when I tried once a day circulation. The main thing to watch for is cloudiness in your water when you drain it. If it isn't just as clear as when it went in then something is getting out of line. If you did develop issues then dropping a small airstone down your pipe would be an easy option. Don't let my opinion get in the way of your experiment though. It may work perfectly without ever having to change anything. Good luck!

I was concerned about issues with no aeriation on this grow from the start, but I was way off on that one. They turned out great! Enjoyed following you on this one.

Wicked_Stixcommented6 years ago
@Smowkabowl, if you had any root issues the plants would have had problems. You proved the hempy bucket definitely works.
Smowkabowl
Smowkabowlcommented6 years ago
@Wicked_Stix, I never gave it a second thought. I'll be inspecting the roots soon though. I just cut them down after 72 hrs in the dark. The buckets were light as air and when I pulled on the stem it wouldn't budge. I'll post some pictures of the roots later. What should I look for as I inspect? Root rot? Color? I appreciate you tuning in for this one. I'm amazed with the ease and size of this grow. Stay tuned. Peace

Yep - looks like transition to me dude๐Ÿ‘. The height on these is so impressive. Makes me wanna run out my autos without training just to see em take off๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ‘Œ

@Smowkabowl, good for you dude - always good to know how the plant grows naturally if youโ€™re gonna learn how to manipulate it for max effect. Photos are unmatched for versatility and my preference but nothing beats an auto for speed and simplicity when you need it.๐Ÿ‘

Smowkabowlcommented6 years ago
@TheBudWhisperer, I think so too, the number of bud sites is building fast ๐Ÿ˜€ My first two grows I have just been learning to grow healthy cannabis plants. I wanted to keep the stress as minimal as possible, a little leaf tucking or removal, here and there, if needed. Although, I have been experimenting a little here and there. Tangie was a late bloomer so I did some LST with her. Tied down the main stem and her branches to get a feel for how the plant responds. With the Hempy Buckets, I removed the first two sets of branches and leaves after the third set came out and you can see the results here, nice bush form and tons of branching. I love autos and the natural forms and no stress grows but I know that in order to get the most from my lights and energy I will need to learn to SOG and SCROG. With that in mind, I don't think autos are the way to go. I think I will eventually move on to photo period genetics for the main garden and grow autos for certain strains and guerilla style during the spring and summer and just let 'em go. But like I said, right now, I'm just trying to grow healthy plants. I'm not to worried about yield yet. I'm also thinking MegaCrop will be the way to go, we'll see. Peace bro

@TheBudWhisperer, thanks man. It started slow and just took off and really has been such an easy grow. The buds are so heavy everything is sagging (update in a day or two) and I've had to tie a few branches to supports. Peace

Looks like they are progressing pretty good! I was talking to someone the other day that has run those hempy buckets and he got great results with them. I topped mine but looking at yours it seems those lower branches are growing out great without having to top them. Curious, what do you think about the hydro compared to the way you usually grow?
Smowkabowl
Smowkabowlcommented6 years ago
@Wicked_Stix, thanks for stopping by. Dude, I am such a newbie to growing, I have nothing to compare anything to. So it's hard to have much of an opinion on anything yet. But I will say, I don't like all the handling and transplanting, especially with autos. I try not to stress 'em at all. I also think the process (germinating in paper, transplanting, humidity chamber, transplanting, etc...) slows the growth and maturity (not in time, but size, especially autos) of the plants. With that being said, I decided to experiment with the Hempy plants and removed the 1st two sets of branches from both plants. A 30 year grower I follow mentioned how he removes them on all his plants. So, this may be why you mentioned the size of those branches. Those are really the 3rd set of branches and the plant is only 8 inches total. I have noticed on my other plants that the 1st two sets of branches are usually buried under the canopy and never make it to the top on their own and I have found myself cutting 'em off especially if they get in the way otherwise I'm letting 'em go because my 1st grow I defoliated and I think I stunted my plants. Not to mention they were under fed, under watered and overdosed with light. Just compare my 1st diary with any of my current SuperSoil grows.... pfffft, no comparision 27 inches max to over 50 inches and still going... I'm gonna have ta rework my light rigging and room Again, thanks for tuning in and turning on. Peace bro
