Started seeds in the evening on 1/3/2025.
These were three free seeds I got when I purchased the OKC that I grew in my last diary.
I'm trying to do some experimentation this time so I'm going to try two new things:
1) Try not to change the reservoir the entire grow
2) Do a mainline
Two of the three seeds germinated. They went into veg on 1/17 at 14 days in.
Yesterday drained and cleaned tank/pumps with bleach
Filled tank to 15G. Had an extra 5G in a bucket (filled it a few days ago)
Today used ONLY Jack's to make solution
Drained reservoir
Filled with 5G toilet water 6G solution
EC 1.5
PH 6.0
Both plants were at 6 nodes. Chopped at 3rd node.
Took (first) pictures.
First day of Bloom
Mixed up 15G solution in tank. No adjusting was required
5.8 PH
2.0 EC
Installed new carbon filter
trained plant
raised light and increased to ~700 ppfd
Flipped to 0800 - 2000
Reservoir
1.8 EC
5.8 PH
So I think I'm going to be harvesting next weekend. I would probably have pushed this out to 9 weeks in bloom, but due to other circumstances I'm going to wrap this up in 8 weeks of bloom. As it stands it's probably about 80% cloudy 20% clear. Not really seeing any amber really. I usually shoot for 90% cloudy 10% amber.
As you can see the no reservoir changes thing didn't work out. The first one I did was a sort of panic that there was yucky stuff in my reservoir because it got really foamy and I blamed it on the silica I had tried. I took that out and went with just straight Jack's and Hydroguard the remainder of the grow.
However, I started to see what I thought was tip burn but later turned into a potassium deficiency that I think was brought about during the stretch and the high nutrient demand the plant had. I should have done at least a single water change then and I didn't. I then later had to go out of town and leave things to my wife. At that time the EC was only going up and I was adding straight RO water. I should have known at the time that it was time to do a water change. I when I got back after just shy of a week things had deteriorated. That is when I did a water change on the 38th day in Bloom of Week 12.
All that being said, I have found that weekly water changes are totally unnecessary. I think maybe two water changes total would be required the entire grow (not including a flush). Speaking of, I'd normally have started the flush this coming weekend, but since I'm harvesting I'm just going to stick with solution because that is all I've got right now. It would be too much of a hassle to acquire the RO water.
The mainlining test was very interesting, although as you can see I broke a bunch of shit. One break was two freaking main colas and they are all sad (couldn't get good pics of them). I found the plant was weak to the LST I was attempting to do which lead to most of my breaks. I need to figure something out in the future to prevent that from happening again. Even though I mucked things up with all the breaks I still think I'm going to get a decent yield off these two.
I like how the concept of mainlining should work and I will continue to do that moving forward. However, this strain stretched way more than I ever expected. Unfortunately, I thought I could get away with using my broken light where the dimmer doesn't work because I assumed the plant would be more uniform and short, but these girls just stretched out like crazy. You can see the they are suffering from light stress but I've got the light as far as I can possibly get it (it's even zip tied to the eyelets instead of the normal hanger).
In the end though I'm not sweating it because this was really a test of multiple things and it's worked out pretty decent.
I think both of these pheno's are leaning towards the lilac diesel side from what I've seen. They have a kind of sweet trashy smell right now with a hint of floral.
I think for free seeds this wasn't a bad haul and I've been testing out several new things this grow. For what it's worth, this wasn't a difficult strain to grow.
Like I'd said last week, I think I could have maybe stretched this another week but due to life circumstances this weekend was the time to do it. I'm pretty satisfied that I got it done this weekend as I think the plants were pretty much ready anyways.
The smell from these are intoxicating. This last week the smell became a very sweet smell with a slight citrus/floral thing going on that I just couldn't get enough of. I'm very excited to see how this bud tastes when it's ready.
Unfortunately that one break on the right plant of those two growth tips really affected my yield with it weighing over a lb. less than the one the left. It's a shame because it grew the bigger buds of the two. The one on the left really started weak and if I'd had a bigger selection of starts I'm sure it wouldn't have been picked, but I only had three seeds to work with and one didn't pop. That being said, this being my first time doing a mainline, I am happy overall with the results (even though I affected the yield with that break). I am going to continue using this method going forward, and figure out how to not break stuff again so I can get the full potential.
I decided to go ahead and trim as many of the fan leaves as I could while they were still supported as I've found it's more difficult after you chop them. I took some before and after pictures of that.
Overall, this has been a great experiment for me. I didn't mention some of the things I'd done earlier in this diary but I've added a nutrient tank with premix in it. Before I would top the reservoir off with water and do water changes once a week. The nutrient tank thing really made things so much better overall. Now that I've added that into my routine, I have found that I was most likely starving my plants in the past with topping my reservoir off with water only. After some research before this grow I came across some information about EC fluctuations being bad, and keeping the EC steady has really made a big difference. Additionally, the amount of effort involved was much better than doing weekly water changes. I think I could get away with only a single water change the entire grow, not counting a flush. I think I could probably go till about the 3rd week of bloom and then do a water change at that point.
I also tried using Silica early on and removed it very early because my solution tank was getting foamy and I was thinking it was the Silica. In hindsight I think I'd like to give it another shot. I tried using a waterfall aerator instead of stones in my solution tank and I think the nature of the waterfall is that it's going to create foam no matter what. I'm probably going to avoid that style in the future.
This is my last grow in this growroom. I was pretty proud of my setup, but hopefully I'm moving on to bigger and better things. Next time I check in , it will be my new setup.
I will add a smoke report when it's done curing!
