Blueberry Muffin No Till 4x4

Anglerfish Transplanted into 15 gallon pots containing BaS 3.0. I’m following the BaS Classic no till protocol, so I top dressed with their craft blend and build a flower (compost), then added cover crop and straw mulch. This should have enough to get through harvest with only watering, but I’ll probably give them some supplements just because I want to.

Anglerfish Week 2 and plants look healthy. One is clearly growing faster than the others but we’ll see how it goes. Watering with only the Q60 wetting agent. I don’t plan on feeding much at all until before I flip to flower since the soil is so rich already. Pics show before and after topping.

Anglerfish Pics show day 18 vs 21 of veg. Plant positions were rotated counterclockwise between pics.. I topped a second time on day 24 of veg. This is seen in the last 4 pics. Someone suggested this could help encourage the weakest one to focus on root growth, but it also will help with airflow and help the plants bush out more. Cover crop is going crazy. I will cut it down more but I’m fascinated to see it grow, especially the larger ones like the cow peas (black eyed peas). Continuing to water with just filtered water plus wetting agent. I may top dress before I flip to flower, whenever that is.

Anglerfish Day 25 of veg. This is an early week 4 update but I wanted to show the defoliation that I did. The day after topping (shown in previous update) I decided to go all in and defoliate. I’m really happy with the result and I think they are responding well. The smallest plant looks so much better after being topped. First set of pics is after defoliating. Second set is the day after where I did some super cropping on the 2 larger plants to even out the canopy. I’m going to let the smaller plant do its thing.

Anglerfish Day 34 of veg. Plants have moved positions since the last update. I think this will be their final positions for the rest of the grow. Things are looking good. The weakest one (back right) is looking a lot better compared to a few weeks ago. I’ve been doing some mild LST to set up a flat canopy. I’ve also done some defoliation to keep airflow going. I will flip to flowering once the weak one grows a bit more and gets a decent canopy going.

Anglerfish I added in a screen to help shape a flat canopy. This screen is low because will be adding a second screen after flipping to flower. I have been defoliating below the screen over the course of the week. Not too aggressively, only leaves that are fully shaded out.

Anglerfish This will be the final week of veg. I would have flipped last week but I have a trip coming up in a few days and I want to be around to manage the stretch etc. The big plant had 2 tops which have had weird growth. The stalk became flat and the leaf spacing became very erratic. I decided to chop the weird growth down to where new growth was normal. So I basically topped again. I have been water-only up to now, but did a big supplemental feed to prep for flower. I followed the build-a-soil supplemental feeding schedule, minus the ferments and a few other things that I don’t feel are necessary. Feed amounts I logged here are just rough estimates. I followed the protocol from BaS.

Anglerfish This is the last week of veg. I flipped to 12/12 after taking these pics. The big plant on the left is still a pale green. Not exactly sure what’s going on. I can’t imagine it’s low on nitrogen as the soil should be very rich. The tips are yellow as well, which could be under-watering. All I can do going forward is keep the environment dialed in and try to water when they need it. See you next week for the first flowering update.

Anglerfish Pics are from today which is day 9 of flower and the last day of week 9. The big plant (left) continues to be pale green/yellow. As I mentioned before, it seems like it could be nitrogen deficiency, but the old lower leaves don’t show any signs of it. I’m not going to be reactionary and dump a bunch of nutes into it. I’m going to continue keeping the environment as dialed in as I can and let it ride. The weakest one (back right) is doing great. The pics don’t do it justice as I’ve been tucking branches to get the canopy evened out as it has been hard to do until now. The front right plant has been solid for the entire grow so far. Once they all stretch a bit more I’m going to add a second screen that will support the buds over the course of flowering.

Anglerfish Pics are from today, day 16 of flower, the last day of week 10. I believe I confirmed that the issue with the big plant on the left was indeed nitrogen deficiency. I had suspected this was the issue, but I wasn’t seeing all of the symptoms based on my research. I think this plant is just more nitrogen hungry than the other two, and I was consistently defoliating older leaves, so the new leaves weren’t able to pull nitrogen from them. To treat/test this, I did a foliar spray with fish protein (pure protein dry) to give it some fast nitrogen, and I added a nitrogen supplement (build a veg) to their last feed. I’m not sure if it comes through in the pictures, but I can see green returning to the yellowed leaves. I will continue giving a bit of nitrogen supplement for the next week or two and see how they do. This was a good learning opportunity.

Anglerfish Day 23 of flower and the end of week 11. Looking good. I’ve been defoliating wherever leaves are blocking bud sites. I also decided to chop off the weakest stems which didn’t make it to the canopy and were shaded out. The back right plant is the runt and has a lot of stems that didn’t make it to the canopy, so I left several of them on as long as they were getting direct light.

Anglerfish Day 30 of flower and the last day of week 12. I’m dealing with gnats now, unfortunately. A few weeks ago I top dressed with worm castings from a brand I’ve never used before. This could be the source of these gnats. But I also added a new layer of straw mulch, which I don’t think I really needed to do. That new mulch layer allowed the top of the soil to stay moist, creating an ideal environment for the gnats to thrive. That’s my hypothesis anyway. Yesterday I watered with Mosquito Bits (BTI), sprayed the plants and tent with EM5 and put in a bunch of sticky traps. I will continue treating with Mosquito Bits once a week as the directions say. Other than that, the plants look great. The left plant has almost completely recovered from the nitrogen deficiency. Looking back at photos from a few weeks ago the difference is crazy; they used to be so yellow. I have a 2x4 tent where I am keeping clones of each plant. The back right plant has been the slowest growing, but I really love the bud structure. If the end product is good then I may end up keeping it. Otherwise I will likely keep the front right plant, but I can’t say for sure until I’ve smoked it. See you next week.

Anglerfish Day 37 of flower and the end of week 13. Almost all of the adult gnats are gone. I’ll continue to treat with mosquito bits for two more weeks to make sure the eggs die. Good lord this has been annoying. The breeder for this strain says it finishes flowering in 45 days but I doubt that. I’m expecting at least 60 days, but we’ll see. I like a bit more amber trichomes anyway.

Anglerfish Day 44 of flowering and the last day of week 14. I’m still battling gnats but there are definitely fewer now. When I open the tent I don’t see them flying around, but they’ll come out if I start disturbing the top of the soil. I’ve done three treatments of BTI (mosquito bits) over the past three weeks, and this week I added nematodes. It’s possible they’ll be around when it’s time to harvest but I’ll do what I can to prevent that. Otherwise plants are looking good. I have fed them more than I needed to, which you can see in the burnt tips, but it’s not too bad. As of this week I’ve stopped feeding with any P/K supplements. There are still white pistils growing on the buds so I expect they are at least 3 weeks from being ready. See you next week.
