Germination

JonnyTerpen Hey guys, I wish you all a nice weekend and wanted to share my next project with you today. I’ll probably start next week, but since I have time today and my new equipment has arrived, I’m getting started right away. This time, a lot will be different, no more CalMag, bigger pots, the soil will be mixed with a bit of perlite, the little ones have a new nursery, and the water will be regulated with phosphoric acid (or not at all). I’m still researching that because I have very soft water and a pH of 8.5, and soft water shouldn’t be a problem since the soil life doesn’t have to fight against the carbonates and buffers the pH well, but 8.5? If anyone knows anything about that, spill it. Please! 🤓 Citric acid is supposed to react with the carbonates, making calcium and magnesium available to the plants since they are no longer in carbonate form, and that could lead to over-fertilization. That would make sense given the amounts of CalMag I used in the current run, and the soil is still pretty full of it. Have fun and let it grow! 🤠💚

JonnyTerpen Tag 1 Hey friends, after 11 days, it's finally moving forward and we're just starting without Lady Cherry. The little ones have moved into their nursery and were planted in 0.5-liter pots, the light is on for 19 hours (with sunrise and sunset) and is shining on the little ones with 160 ppfd. The Lemon Fever seems to be a bit confused, it's been looking to the side for 2 days. 🙈 Off to a good start! 🤣 I hope Studio Cherry makes it by tomorrow, then we'll have a Christmas trio! Wishing you big buds on the trees and always stay clean! 🖖🦊

JonnyTerpen Tag 12 Hey friends, first of all, I wish you a happy new year and all the best for 2026! 💚🎉 Lady Cherry unfortunately didn't make it, but there will definitely be another attempt in the next run! I've been really busy lately, but the little ones have made it, and even though it's only two of them continuing, I hope you stick around! Somehow they're growing pretty slowly, maybe it's time to move them into the tent, but I'll test how it goes in the kids' room for now. They actually have enough light, but I think the stagnant air isn't doing them any good. They're getting 269 ppfd and I'm only watering with plain water, not even adjusting the pH yet. But I have a feeling they don't quite like that.

I also have a pH of over 8 from the tap water. So far, no problems. I switched to LST because I was tired of measuring pH and all that 😅. If you have large pots, water moderately, and really good living soil, it works. If you also plant some good, fast-growing companion plants that promote soil life with their root exudates and keep the soil active until your girls are big enough to be the boss of the soil, nothing can go wrong. The only downside is the higher messiness in the pot. They should also be trimmed down sometimes.

@SleepyChow, thanks for the tip! I also think it should work without it, I've been researching for a while now and everything suggests that with soft water it's not a problem, and it works for you too. But I saw you already have a bed, I'm aiming for about 14 liters as the final pot. The companion planting thing is also interesting, I'm currently reading up on that. It's going to be exciting! ✌️💚🤠

@JonnyTerpen, I think that moderate watering is also a key topic. If you water a lot quickly, it leads to pH fluctuations. I rely on blumat, but there are other systems too. If you don't want that, like I said, it's best to water just a little bit. More biomass means more buffer, but it might work with smaller pots too. I've just heard that you might have to fertilize if there aren't enough nutrients in the soil. Maybe KNF or JADAM would also be a topic for you.

@SleepyChow, that's why drip irrigation is often recommended. I still have a bit of time to think about it and read up a little more. Thx! 🙏

FYI, if you want to enter contests, ( im sure you will) you need to separate your diaries. See undet home tab. The environment is the same, copy from one diary to the other.

@Natrona, Thanks for the tip! You're right, I definitely want to participate in a competition as soon as I have my first harvest and a particularly beautiful plant that does justice to a competition. Is it then approved to make an extra diary with a strain from this run and submit it to a competition? Then I would pick out the queen and submit it afterwards as a single diary, or is that scam? 😬🦊

Natrona commented8mo ago
@JonnyTerpen, Different contests. Diary of the Month is a harvested diary of a single strain. Photo OTM is 1 picture. Breeders,- Fastbuds, Zamnesia , Divine etc, will sponsor their own contests using their strains. Take a look.

My water comes out of the tap at 8.5-8.9. I let my bucket of water air out for 24hrs or more to rid of chlorine. I add my fertilizers then test my ph. I always have to PHDown (acid). I try for 6.2-6.5. Happy growing 🌱 💚 💫

Hey Jonny, I just read your entry and wanted to chime in briefly. It’s possible to water with pH 8. As you’ve nicely pointed out, it works, but you’re giving your grow factory a ton of extra work to buffer the nutrient solution through the soil. Instead of properly feeding the plant right away, it first has to create the conditions to be able to take in nutrients. Good luck and happy trails for the rest of the way 🤞
JonnyTerpen
JonnyTerpen commented8mo ago
@Oims_Finest, here we are again at the point of soft water. I'll probably take phosphoric acid again like I used to with Coco, the citric acid thing wasn't really great in my opinion and it doesn't really stabilize the pH either. It's definitely a science! 😈

Oims_Finest commented8mo ago
@JonnyTerpen, actually not at all.. but yeah, you're right, the tools available are often really bad quality.. I've had the best experiences with the T.A. pH powder and for the pH meter, I got myself a semi-professional device that has been measuring reliably for the last 3 years..

Very nice selection, this will be an exciting winter grow! Regarding water: In my case, it's the opposite; I have very hard water and even have to add magnesium sulfate heptahydrate to get the right CalMag ratio instead of supplementing a CalMag mix. If you have soft water, you theoretically shouldn't worry about too much Ca or Mg, that you have to switch to phosphoric acid? At least depending on how much of that is already in the soil. I would always adjust the pH just to be safe. Trusting in the soil life is good, but control is better, comrade! haha
JonnyTerpen
JonnyTerpen commented8mo ago
@Ganjin, thanks for that! You're right, there is something to it, yeah, there's quite a bit of calcium and magnesium in the soil. I still haven't figured out if it came from the soil, the extra CalMag, or if it was due to overwatering. Next time, I'd just like to play it safe, although I'm really satisfied aside from the curled leaves. Have a nice Sunday bro and let it grow! 🤠💚

I also have a pH of 8.2 from the tap water, and as soon as I add nutrients (advanced nutrients organics), the pH drops to 4. Because of that, I had problems with manganese excess in the middle of flowering, especially with the wizard trees happy hour. I always thought it would be fine since the pH stays at 8 and the soil does the rest, but in my case, definitely not. stay high
